Presidential campaigns often brace for what’s known as an “October Surprise," a potentially game-changing revelation just weeks before the election. This year, the surprise came early in the month. Just after midnight on Friday morning, President Donald Trump tweeted that he and the First Lady had tested positive for COVID-19. The news is already disrupting the final sprint to Election Day with only 4 weeks to go."He is in an age group that does have, that does carry risk for severe COVID, so this is very concerning," said UCLA epidemiology professor Anne Rimoin.President Trump, who favors holding in-person campaign rallies, canceled one scheduled for Friday in Florida and two others in Wisconsin this weekend. Both are critical swing states that polling has shown the president and Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden are in a tight race. The president also was absent on a previously scheduled conference call Friday afternoon. The news comes at the end of a week which included a raucous Presidential Debate, with President Trump frequently interrupting his challenger, former Vice President Joe Biden, as well as debate moderator Chris Wallace of Fox News. The future of the next presidential debate, scheduled to take place in Miami on October 15, remains up in the air. Trump's campaign has not released an official statement about the debate specifically.Meanwhile, the Vice Presidential Debate, set for this coming Wednesday is still on. Vice President Mike Pence, and his wife, Karen, announced they both tested negative for the virus. Pence and Senator Kamala Harris will debate in Salt Lake City on October 7. Questions remain about the coronavirus status of others in the president’s inner circle, many of whom traveled without masks around both him and presidential advisor Hope Hicks. She was the first to show symptoms and test positive this week, which eventually led to the president getting tested himself.Democratic candidate and former Vice President Joe Biden tweeted out that he and his wife, Jill, both tested negative for the virus and are praying “for the health and safety of the President and his family.” 2155

Republicans are reportedly seeking to extend increased unemployment benefits in the next round of COVID-19 stimulus, but at a much lower rate, according to The New York Times and The Washington Post. Both The Times and The Post report that Republican lawmakers are prepared to introduce a stimulus package that would continue increased unemployment insurance, but would reduce weekly aid from 0 a week to 0 a week. The 0 federal payments, put in place by the .2 trillion CARES Act that was passed in March, expired over the weekend.According to both The Times and The Post, the Republican plan would offer the 0 insurance for two months, during which time states would need to develop their own plans that would pay unemployed workers 70% of what they were making prior to the pandemic. Many Republicans argue that the 0 a week payments created an incentive for those unemployed to not work, arguing that many were receiving more in unemployment insurance than they would if working.Democrats favor extending the 0 payments through the end of the year with the HEROES Act — a stimulus package that passed through the House in May. The Senate has not yet taken action on the bill.On Friday, Democrats argued that Republicans needed to work with them quickly in order to get payments to those that need them. Rep. Danny Davis, D-Illinois, argued that the benefits were needed because COVID-19 made it too dangerous for some to work, made others unable to work due to lost jobs, and made childcare more difficult due to the closure of schools.Pelosi slammed the Republicans' delay in her press conference Friday, calling it a "dereliction" of their duty. She asked that Republicans "get something on paper" so that Democrats and the American people could see their plan.Republicans have promised to propose new stimulus legislation in the coming days. 1873

President Donald Trump tweeted a photo on Wednesday of rockets that were aimed at the US Embassy in Baghdad, and claimed that the rockets were fired by Iran. The attack came on Sunday, embassy officials confirmed. Trump said that three of the rockets failed to launch. The embassy said that there was minor damage to the compound, but no injuries. The US embassy said there were reports of damage and injuries in residential communities near the embassy.“These sorts of attacks on diplomatic facilities are a violation of international law and are a direct assault on the sovereignty of the Iraqi government,” the US Embassy in Baghdad tweeted.“Some friendly health advice to Iran: If one American is killed, I will hold Iran responsible. Think it over,” Trump said on Wednesday.Tensions rose earlier this year between Iran and the US after Iranian General Qasem Soleimani was killed after a US attack on the influential Iranian military leader. Iran responded by firing more than a dozen missiles that struck two airbases in Iraq that houses U.S. troops, the Pentagon confirmed. Iran said at the time that it did not seek to escalate tensions between the two nations."Iran took & concluded proportionate measures in self-defense under Article 51 of UN Charter targeting base from which cowardly armed attack against our citizens & senior officials were launched," Iran's Foreign Minister Javad Zarif said in January. "We do not seek escalation or war, but will defend ourselves against any aggression."Saeed Khatibzadeh, a spokesperson for Iran’s foreign ministry, alleged on Monday that the US was responsible for escalating tensions following Sunday’s attack.“We strongly refute Secretary (Mike) Pompeo 's irresponsible anti-Iran accusations, which blatantly aim to create tension,” Khatibzadeh tweeted. “Iran rejects any attack on diplomatic missions. The U.S. military presence is the source of instability in our region. No amount of spin can divert blame for its evils.” 1991
