CHULA VISTA, Calif., (KGTV) — More and more San Diegans are rushing to get tested for COVID-19, but the wait times at some South Bay locations are hours long.Cars wrapped around the South Chula Vista Library as hundreds of people are waited to be tested for the coronavirus."Testing is just something that we all need to be doing regularly right now," Nancy Maldonado, CEO of the Chicano Federation, said.Recently, the lines and wait times at the county's free testing sites have been getting longer, especially in the South Bay. Maldonado says this area is home to many Hispanic or Latino San Diegans who have front line jobs, with greater exposure to the virus."The other reason is the multi-generational housing, and the lack of housing here in San Diego," Maldonado explained.At its peak, Hispanic and Latinos made up 63% of the County's infection rate, despite only being 34% of the population. Most recent statistics show that number dropped to 57.7%."It's still high, and it's still alarming, but we have seen that number start to come down," Maldonado said.It's thanks to community organizations like the Chicano Foundation and the San Diego Latino Health Coalition that take away the stigma of testing. They offer resources for those who test positive, support for families, and even quarantine locations."There are resources available, so they don't have to stay within that household," Maldonado said.But there are still some obstacles. There have been reports of many people going to Aquatica, not knowing about the "appointment only" system. So they are being turned away."A lot of the county sites are switching to 'appointment only,' but that message isn't getting out fast enough," Maldonado said.That is why it is essential to check online before leaving your home, although making appointments is always recommended."It's up to all of us to make sacrifices right now and do everything we can to bring down this infection rate so we can reopen and so our small businesses don't have to keep suffering," Maldonado said.The county is now working with community partners to set up more testing locations where there is the greatest need. 2159

(KGTV) - A Chula Vista school rallied around one of its own students faced with tragedy Thursday night.Camarena Elementary hosted a fundraiser for the family of Aura Mancilla, a mother who was murdered earlier this month.“She was here [at Camarena] almost every day trying to help out her daughter and our community,” said her friend and PTA President Karina Jones. Chula Vista Police said David Bell shot Aura Mancilla and her aunt, Patricia Garcia, in Mancilla’s home.  Thankfully, Mancilla’s daughter, Iyali, wasn’t home.  Bell later took his own life.The Camarena community organized a dinner fundraiser Thursday night where local vendors brought their food trucks and tents and donated 20% of the proceeds to the family. “It’s something that you want to take care of that child to make sure that she’s still loved and that we’re here for her,” said Jones.Chula Vista Police said they still don’t have a motive for the two killings. 989

(KGTV) - California Highway Patrol officers opened fire, fatally shooting a suspect after a chase that began in Orange County ended in Chula Vista, the agency said.The chase started just before midnight when, for an unknown reason, Santa Ana Police attempted a traffic stop.The pursuit continued through San Diego County until coming to an end near I-805 south and East Orange Avenue around 1:30 a.m.At some point, CHP says officers opened fire on the suspect, who was later pronounced dead at the hospital. CHP did not say whether the driver was armed or whether there was anyone else in the vehicle.No CHP officers were hit, the agency confirmed. According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, all lanes of the southbound 805 near Orange Avenue remain closed due to the investigation. (KGTV) — The Port of San Diego and Regional Airport Authority have reached an agreement over a fee that threatened to delay the revitalization of Chula Vista's waterfront.The Airport Authority agreed to withdraw from a lawsuit challenging a .50 rental car fee added to car rentals at the San Diego International Airport to fund a parking garage for the Chula Vista Bayfront project.Under the settlement, the Port also agreed to a number of provisions, "that protect a number of Airport Authority interests."RELATED: Dispute over airport fee could delay Chula Vista Bayfront project“We have reached a resolution that addresses the funding mechanism for a parking facility that will serve the public for many years to come. CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- A new support group in the South Bay hopes to fill a gap, serving children whose loved ones have been diagnosed with cancer. The group was created by siblings Sophia and Vincent Epley, ages 13 and 11. Last year the two found themselves facing a heartbreaking reality when both parents were diagnosed with cancer. Sophia and Vincent wanted to create a safe place where kids can ask questions and meet others going through similar situations. The Children and Family Cancer Support Group is led by clinical social worker Cara Fairfax and is open to all families.Details: 613
