SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California public health officials say the Southern California region has run out of ICU bed capacity.The region, which includes San Diego and 10 other counties, hit 0% capacity, as the state reported 52,200 more coronavirus cases on Thursday. California officials say regional ICU capacity is calculated based on the total number of adult ICU beds minus neonatal and pediatric ICU beds. Adult ICU capacity includes staffed ICU beds and ICU surge beds.San Diego County said Thursday that it was currently at 16% ICU capacity after adding 2,604 new virus cases. There are 295 ICU cases in the county out of 1,186 hospitalizations. But we've also seen humanity pull together in acts of service and sacrifice.For RN Ana Wilkinson it's a calling born from her childhood, a past not without pain.When Wilkinson arrived in New York City in the midst of the pandemic. She was unprepared for what she witnessed. Put on the floor that night, Wilkinson was given 15 COVID patients. Despite all her efforts, she would lose 8 patients that night. While she says some nurses quit the next day, she decided to stay and "just be Ana." For Ana that meant an unorthodox approach to the sickest patients. She would smile, hold their hands, and dance.Behind her mask of optimism were a lifetime of pain, loss, and sorrow. Something she tries to make better for her patients and their families.At around three years old Ana and her family immigrated to the U.S from Nicaragua as refugees. Childhood was difficult. Her mother's alcoholism would lead to abuse. Abuse and neglect would lead to Ana being put in a foster home. Some days she went to school with bruises.All this Ana says makes her see things differently. She believes it helps her to be more compassionate as a nurse. She is now happily married to a firefighter and has two young boys but volunteering to provide medical care where it's needed is an important part of her life. Whether it's New York City or other countries around the world, Wilkinson answers the call. Always ready to be there in a patient's darkest hours... hoping just maybe her smile can bring light.As part of this story Hunt interviewed Del Mar Clinical Psychologist, and international personality expert, Dr. Richard Levak. Levak has been tasked by American television series such as Survivor, Apprentice, and The Amazing Race to analyze personalities to determine capable candidates and group dynamics. Dr. Levak has never worked with Wilkinson but provided research and analysis. He said the most important thing for all hospitalized COVID patients is not to feel alone. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — At age 41, Ryan Bartell had already achieved so much: He was a two-time all-state runner, served in the Coast Guard, and was helping autistic children alongside his wife. He also had a son of his own. “Ryan called me on March 1 of last year to say that he had been diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer," remembers Jim Bartell, Ryan's father. The cancer was aggressive and chemotherapy wasn't working, Ryan was in a lot of pain. “They had him on morphine and fentanyl, two very serious opioids, and because of those two drugs he was asleep most of the time to deal with the pain," said Jim. Jim says that lasted for about four weeks until Ryan asked for cannabis. “He went from being asleep most of the time with fentanyl and morphine to being alert and being able to communicate, text, talk to friends, have visitors, while he was on the cannabis medicines."Jim says the cannabis gave Ryan a decent quality of life in his final weeks; he passed away seven weeks after the initial diagnosis. “While medical cannabis has been proven to help with reducing nausea, vomiting, and pain, hospitals in our state are expressly prohibited from providing it to patients," said State Senator Ben Hueso.Because of the Federal Drug-Free Workforce Act, hospitals have adopted policies prohibiting cannabis in their facilities. Hueso wants to change that with SB 305 or Ryan’s Law: Compassionate Access to Medical Cannabis in Healthcare Facilities Act.Healthcare facilities which treat terminally ill patients would be required to allow the use of medical cannabis, meaning patients could bring their product inside the hospital.The patient would be required to provide the facility with a copy of their medical marijuana card or recommendation by a physician.The bill excludes vaping or smoking but edibles, oils, topicals, etc. would be allowed. New York already has a similar law. “I felt something had to be done so that that didn’t happen to other people who wanted a higher quality of life near the end of their life," said Jim, who initiated the legislation. 2082

Not a single customer in sight. 90 percent of his workers are from Tijuana and couldn’t get there.He says business has been down 40 percent in the last month.
