MOSCOW, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Cheng Guoping held talks with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexei Borodavkin here on Tuesday, exchanging views with the Russian side on the current situation of the Korean Peninsula.The two sides reached consensus on the issue, saying both China and Russia urged the Republic of Korea (ROK) and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to jointly mitigate tensions on the peninsula and to resume direct dialogue at an early date.Escalating tensions on the peninsula may even trigger a war, which is absolute not in line with the interests of the relevant sides including Russia, the United States and Japan, the two diplomats said in a joint statement.The ROK and the DPRK are the most susceptible if the war broke out, the statement added.China and Russia will never allow any war on the peninsula, or the lingering tensions between the two countries. Thus, China and Russia will continue to further cooperation and coordination on the issue and to push forward the direct dialogue between the ROK and the DPRK, the diplomats said.They said China and Russia are calling for joint efforts from relevant sides to stabilize the situation on the peninsula and not to impair peace, safety or stability.The two sides also reiterated that the six-party talks were proved to be the most realistic and most effective solution to solving the problem.Currently, emergency consultations among the heads of delegations to the six-party talks are in urgent need, they added.Launched in 2003 and stalled since the end of 2008, the six- party talks on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue involve China, the United States, the DPRK, the ROK, Russia and Japan.The two sides also exchanged views on bilateral ties, including high-level exchanges, the overall promotion of China-Russia strategic partnership of coordination, and several other issues.

BEIJING, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- China's apparent consumption of crude steel is likely to reach 596 million tonnes this year, a year-on-year increase of 5.6 percent, according to a steel association official.Apparent consumption represents the sum of net imports and output, and can be used to estimate real consumption excluding inventory.Luo Bingsheng, deputy head of the China Iron and Steel Association, expected the country's crude steel output to climb 8.2 percent this year from one year earlier, to reach 624 million tonnes.Luo further noted that a rising investment in 2011 would result in an increase in China's steel demand.If the year-on-year growth of the country's social fixed assets investment maintained itself at around 20 percent next year, China's crude steel apparent consumption would see an annual increase of 40 million to 50 million tonnes next year, said Luo.

BEIJING, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- China's drug watchdog has launched a campaign to expose and crack down on illegal spread and selling of drugs on the Internet."Food and drug administration departments at all levels should explore effective methods to stop the sale of fake or inferior-quality drugs, especially those advertised and sold on the Internet," said Shao Mingli, head of the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA), Tuesday at a meeting.According to SFDA's monitoring on six major search engines including Google and Yahoo, after typing the key words of "medicine" plus a type of common disease, such as "diabetes" or "high blood pressure," 10 to 30 percent of search results contained illegal drug-related information.Figures show that, among 196 web pages being monitored, 96 percent did not have or failed to show certificates for drug-related trades or other services. Some 39 percent have no Internet Content Provider (ICP) records in the database of telecommunication management departments.ICP is a permit to run web sites in China.According to the SFDA, these illegal sites usually advertise or sell drug products in the name of large hospitals or research institutes. Some even forged pages of the SFDA drug database to fool buyers that their drugs had been approved by the administration.The campaign is part of a nationwide crackdown on the violation of intellectual property rights and the production and distribution of fake and shoddy products, which began earlier this month.

The participants heard a report of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the CPC over anti-corruption work for 2010 and discussed related plans for 2011.The meeting has called for further efforts to address problems concerning construction projects, and vehicles bought and used at public expenses.Those attending the meeting said regulations and disciplines that govern the selection of officials must be strictly followed and related unsound practices should be corrected.Noting that fighting corruption was still a tough task, the meeting urged all related authorities to step up anti-corruption efforts towards building a clean government.Further, more work must be done to improve officials' style of work and cement ties between the CPC and the masses, the meeting participants said.Also, the participants called for efforts towards building an improved anti-corruption system that consisted of corruption prevention and punishment.Such a move, they added, would facilitate the implementation of China's development blueprint for the 12th Five-Year-Plan period (2011-2015) and China's social and economic development.China will mark the 90th anniversary of CPC's founding next year.
