The pandemic forced us all to make changes to how we work and learn. It also forced trade schools to find new ways to teach people their crafts.Students who attend Laguna College of Art and Design in California spend a large amount of time in a studio setting, at least they did. When the pandemic hit, faculty had to find a way to create the studio experience virtually. Some of the challenges have been giving students feedback, allowing them to see the work of fellow students and the dialogue that comes with it.“These types of interactions, they're intuitive, they're organic, they flow,” said Hope Railey, chair of fine arts at LCAD. “It’s just part of the day, so now those types of interactions need to be planned.”Railey says 6-hour studio classes take faculty 12 hours or more to put together. She says instructors use pre-recorded lectures and lessons so they can do one-on-one meetings with students. She admits it’s a work in progress, but says students are getting invaluable life lessons through all of it.“They're experiencing some of what life is like after a BFA program,” said Railey. “They're experiencing some of the challenges and kind of facing those challenges and the good thing is, they're getting services and help, like detailed granular help.”Railey says students are helping themselves by asking more questions about how to do things once they finish school, like how to do certain research. She also says doing classes over Zoom allowed the school to bring in artists and speakers they wouldn't normally be able to use. 1553

The judge presiding over the trial of four former Minneapolis police officers involved in the arrest that led to the death of George Floyd dropped a lower-level murder charge against the man who knelt on Floyd's neck, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune and KMSP-TV in Minneapolis.Hennepin County District Judge Peter Cahill dismissed a third-degree murder charge against Derek Chauvin on Thursday. Chauvin still faces charges of second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. The state has five days to appeal the ruling.Cahill also ruled that three other former police officers, J. Alexander Kueng, Thomas Lane and Tou Thao, will remain charged with aiding and abetting murder and manslaughter. Chauvin, Kueng, Lane and Thao were arrested in June, days after video of their arrest of Floyd was shared widely on social media. Video of the arrest showed Chauvin kneeling on Floyd's death for nearly nine minutes. Floyd was pronounced dead hours later.Chauvin was initially charged with third-degree murder, but Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison later added a charge of second-degree murder. In Minnesota, a third-degree murder charge implies that a death was unintentional, while a second-degree murder charge implies intent.Earlier this month, Chauvin was released from jail after posting a million bond. This story is breaking and will be updated. 1378

The pandemic put a real stress on the funeral industry in some areas. Some crematoriums and funeral homes even raised prices because of demand.“What you learn is the variance within a market is extraordinary,” said Ed Michael Reggie, founder of Funeralocity.com. “You can have a direct cremation for ,000 or 00, you can have a burial for ,000 or ,000.”On Funeralocity.com, you can find the prices for nearly every funeral home in America, more than 19,000. Experts say people rarely shop around with final preparations.“Survivors are in a grief-stricken state. They just say, ‘oh gosh we’ve been to the memorial funeral home down the street for other things,’ they just call them,” said Reggie.Part of the problem is funeral homes don't have to post prices online. They're required to give the cost over the phone or provide a list in person. The Federal Trade Commission may eventually require it.Funeralocity.com is free to use.“We hope the way we’ve created our website, where you can mix and match, say ‘OK I want a traditional burial with a ceremony, I want one without, I just want a direct burial, a direct cremation, how about a cremation with ceremonies,’ so we let them play around and it’s all apples to apples to apples, all the other funeral homes in the area,” said Reggie.Funeralocity.com created a program to give accreditation to funeral homes that are vetted and transparent. There are laws that prevent funeral homes from charging extra because of a particular disease or refusing services because of a disease. 1547

The Los Angeles Dodgers will play in the World Series for the second year in a row after defeating the Milwaukee Brewers 5-1 Saturday night in the seventh and deciding game of the National League Championship Series. The Dodgers will play the American League champion Boston Red Sox in the World Series, which begins Tuesday.Milwaukee took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when star hitter Christian Yelich tagged a 1-0 pitch from Los Angeles starter Walker Buehler for a home run.But the Dodgers' Cody Bellinger answered in the top of the second with a two-run blast after bunt hit by Manny Machado off Brewers starter Jhoulys Chacin. That gave Los Angeles a 2-1 lead.Chacin only pitched two innings and reliever Josh Hader, who had 12 regular-season saves, pitched three strong innings, giving up just one hit and no runs, to keep the Brewers in the game. He struck out four of the 10 batters he faced. 924

The Gwinnett County Police Department says it has fired an officer for violating policy in a now-viral arrest in which he used a stun gun on a Black woman. In a press release, the department said that it had fired Officer Michael Oxford on Friday, adding that he "violated our policy and did not meet our core values."The video, which has been viewed thousands of times on TikTok, showed Oxford using the stun gun on the woman as he attempted to take her into custody.According to a police report, the incident occurred on Aug. 18, when Oxford responded to a 911 call in Loganville, Georgia. The caller claimed that a woman had thrown a bottle at their home and threatened a 9-year-old child.Oxford then went to the suspect's residence and encountered a woman he recognized from surveillance footage. The Gwinnett Police Department says that people at the home immediately began yelling at Oxford when he approached. According to a police statement, Oxford "attempted to speak with her about the incident but was unable to do so because the defendant in this case, Kyndesia Smith, began yelling at him."That's when the now-viral video begins. It shows Oxford threaten to arrest Smith, 22, if she doesn't stop interrupting. He then attempted to place Smith under arrest and tried to grab her by the shoulders.Eventually, Oxford ordered Smith on the ground. After she didn't immediately comply, he used his stun gun on her. Oxford also claimed in his police report that Smith later tried to kick him as he placed her in a police cruiser.According to NBC News, Smith was charged with "simple battery against an officer and willful obstruction of law enforcement." She was released from jail on Wednesday.Warning: The video below contains explicit language. @jaythegoat3476 This is America ##copbrutality ##blm ##blacklivesmatter ##justice ##killercop ##renegade ##fyp ##fyp ##duet? original sound - jaythegoat3476 1921
