BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong on Thursday met with a U.S. artist delegation, vowing to promote bilateral cultural and art exchanges.Headed by President and Chief Executive Officer of the Asia Society Vishakha Desai, the delegation will participate in the China-U.S. Forum on the Arts and Culture from Nov. 16-19 in Beijing.Liu welcomed the U.S. artists, noting cultural and art exchanges are an important component of bilateral people-to-people exchanges.She said the founding of the forum established an institutionalized and constructive platform for deepening bilateral relations and friendship between the two peoples.Artists from the two countries should exert their influence and actively promote bilateral cultural exchanges, she said.The forum is organized by the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, the Asia Society and the Aspen Institute.An extraordinary line-up of American cultural icons will attend the event, including actress Meryl Streep, film director Joel Coen, musician Yo-Yo Ma, and best-selling author Amy Tan.

BEIJING, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- The People's Bank of China (PBOC), China's central bank, announced Tuesday that it is banning local regions, institutions or individuals from setting up gold exchanges apart from the existing Shanghai Gold Exchange and Shanghai Futures Exchange.The country also bans the establishment of any gold trading platforms in other exchanges, a statement on the PBOC website said.The statement said the country has ordered a cease to the building of any new gold exchanges or trading platforms. Those which have opened for business must cease operations.The ban came amid bigger risks in gold trading after some local regions, institutions and individuals grew enthusiastic in setting up gold exchanges and trading platforms in recent years as gold prices soared, which led to a surge of illegal practices due to inadequate management, the statement said.It added the central bank will work with the Shanghai Gold Exchange and Shanghai Futures Exchange to boost the healthy development of the country's gold trading market.

BEIJING, Oct. 24 (Xinhuanet) -- There is no evidence to prove that using a cell phone can increase the risks of brain cancer, suggested a lastest study by Danish researchers.To arrive at the result, the researchers examined the health records from 1990 to 2007 for 358,403 Danish cell phone plan subscribers.They found that among people using cell phones for as long as 13 years or more, the cancer risks were almost the same as for non-subscribers.The finding, published in the British Medical Journal last week, alleviated the fear among the world's 5 billion cell phone users.Five months ago, a statement from the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) sparked fear in cell phone users around the world because it said that cell phone use might cause brain cancer.However, the finding could not rule out the risk of brain cancer triggered by heavy use of cell phones, admitted Patrizia Frei of the Danish Cancer Society's Institute of Cancer Epidemiology, lead author of the study.Frei added, cited by CNN, "There are still some open questions, about greater amounts of use, and about the effects on children."The IARC did not give formal response to the study, but it offered some ways for cell phone consumers to reduce possible risks months ago.Texting and using hands-free sets for voice calls lower exposure to potentially harmful radiation, compared to device-to-ear voice calls, by at least 10-fold, IARC stated, reported by the New York Daily News.
