SAN DIEGO, Calif (KGTV) - New recommendations aim to help the thousands of teenagers living with depression who are suffering in silence. The American Academy of Pediatrics released new guidelines for primary care doctors to screen young people. They say 2 out of 3 depressed teens are not being identified by their doctors and not getting the care they need. One survey doctors can give to patients is just two questions, another is nine. The purpose is not to establish a final diagnosis but rather screen for depression in a "first step" approach. San Diego Pediatrician Jaime Friedman believes it's a positive step to help young people and that it will be fairly easy to incorporate into visits. She will soon be using tablets on which parents and teens can answer questions related to their visit, they'll also be able to conduct the depression screening on them. Doctors are also being advised to talk to families about safety plans, removing lethal medications or guns from the home to prevent suicide. The AAP recommends young people get screened at least once a year starting at age 12.  1144

SAN DIEGO, CA (KGTV) - Four students have tested positive for COVID-19 in the Del Mar Union School District (DMUSD).The district has since launched a dashboard on its website to inform the school community about any active cases at each school.“We’re just being very transparent and keeping families informed,” said Jenni Huh, the Director of Student Services for DMUSD.Two students tested positive for COVID-19 at Sage Canyon School, one student tested positive at Sycamore Ridge School, and another student tested positive at Torrey Hills School.“We received the results directly from the families, and we were able to respond very quickly,” said Huh. “I’m very happy to say that they are doing very well, and we have not had any other cases.”Huh said all students and staff who came in contacted with those who tested positive are quarantined for 14 days.“If we learned of a presumed positive case, we would treat it exactly as the same way that we would respond to a confirmed positive,” she added.Parents are also notified if their child was potentially exposed to someone who possibly came in contact with someone who tested positive.At Sage Canyon, parents learned of the two positive COVID-19 cases over the weekend.By Monday, students in the two impacted classrooms were able to transition back to online learning.They will continue online learning during the two-week quarantine.DMUSD Superintendent Holly McClurg said district officials developed a Safe Reopening Plan over the summer to respond to these situations. She said the methods worked as expected.“To see children not miss a beat with their instruction has been great,” she said.While many parents may still have concerns sending their children off to school knowing this could happen at any moment, McClurg said the district’s goal is to be transparent and work with families to make the transition back to in-person learning go as smoothly as possible. 1933

(KGTV) - A former North County Boy Scout said he is one of hundreds of sexual abuse victims in a new lawsuit against the Boy Scouts of America.Matt, who only wanted to use his first name, joined the Boy Scouts when he was around 13 years old. He really loved the outdoor activities.“We had a lot of great trips… a lot of good camp outs,” Matt said. Roughly a year after he joined, things changed.“We had an assistant Scoutmaster that started to join us on trips,” Matt said. “He just started spending more time with kids and a lot of these bad things started to happen.”The new lawsuit alleging sexual abuse was filed on behalf of one former scout in Pennsylvania. The total number of alleged victims in this latest wave of accusations is more than 850, according to attorney Andrew Van Arsdale. Matt is one of them.“Our oldest [alleged victim] is in his late 80s. Our youngest is 14-years-old,” Van Arsdale said. Van Arsdale is one of the lawyers involved in the group “Abused in Scouting.” The group came together after hearing the Boy Scouts were potentially filing for bankruptcy. They began a campaign telling victims that they no longer have to be in hiding. “It’s time to come forward. It’s the right time now and the response was overwhelming,” Van Arsdale said. He said he is “100 percent” expecting more people to come forward. For Matt, time has not healed all wounds of what he said the assistant Scoutmaster did to him.“He had come at me on multiple times. I think the first time, I was able to get him away from me,” Matt said. He was able to get away the first time, but not every time. He specifically remembers a camping trip in Camp Pendleton.“I woke up and he had gotten his hands on my genitals and massaging me… I woke up and pushed him off,” Matt said. “I think I just really kind of put it at the back of my head and just tried to forget about it.” But he didn’t forget and he said other kids in his troop were also abused by this man. In a statement, the Boy Scouts of America said that they “believe victims” and that the organization has “taken significant steps over many years to ensure that we respond aggressively and effectively to reports of sexual abuse.” The full statement can be read here. For some, it’s too little too late. “They knew it was a problem for a long time,” Van Arsdale said.“Anytime you got kids with adults having access to kids, you better make sure those adults are reliable, good people. And I don’t know that the scouts are doing that now. I would hope they are, but I know back in the day they weren’t,” Matt said. Matt said he quit because of that assistant Scoutmaster. Many business owners in the area say the memories of damage when peaceful protests escalated at the end of May are still fresh, so they boarded up windows as a precautionary step, hoping it turns out to not be needed.Related: Looters smash windows, rob stores in downtown San DiegoAldo Broussard owns Carter’s Diamonds, a jewelry store in a jewelry exchange building that houses dozens of jewelry shops and professionals. He said they boarded up the windows at their business in May and during that time saw damage to surrounding buildings, so they boarded up windows again ahead of the election. He said they took that step to protect the small-business owners inside the facility.“There’s a lot of jewelers in here who have basically all their life savings, all their work, all their tools and without it they can’t make a living so it’s more for protection for everybody in the building,” said Broussard.Broussard added that he doesn’t expect protests to cause damage, but would rather be safe than sorry.“I think overall people are good so I think it’s going to be okay. There might be a few who take advantage of the situation but I think overall it’s going to be fine,” he said.Nearby, Sushi 2 restaurant is another small business bracing for protests or unrest this week. Kuniko Holmes is the owner and said she boarded up her windows in June after receiving some damage during downtown protests. She ended up leaving the boards up through the summer because of uncertainty of the future and also because she knew November could be a stressful month when she would have to board up again.“I wanted to make sure so I don’t have to put it up and down and up and down because it’s work for people and also it costs. As a small business like we are, even putting the board up made it expensive,” she said.Indoor dining was also not allowed during that time, so she ultimately decided that if the boards would be staying up through most of the year, she would make them visually appealing.“We decided to ask local artists to put some great art as you see and it changes the dynamic of how it looks and it just looks so inviting,” she said, referencing the peace signs and hearts painted on the boards.Other downtown businesses that boarded up windows ahead of the election include Ralphs, CVS, 7-eleven and the Church of Scientology.San Diego County law enforcement agencies said they are not aware of any planned protests or possible unrest, but have extra staffing just in case. 2614
