The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) has given Blackstone Group the green light to buy into and help restructure chemicals giant BlueStar.The NDRC has formerly approved the US company's agreement to pay 0 million for a 20 percent stake in China National BlueStar (Group) Corp, the State-owned chemicals maker.According to a notice on the NDRC website, it has given its permission for BlueStar to tap Blackstone as a strategic foreign investor and carry out restructuring.Blackstone will buy a stake in BlueStar's parent company, China National Chemical Corp, or ChemChina, which will hold 80 percent of BlueStar after the deal.The move is intended to smooth BlueStar's strategic restructuring, international expansion and public listing in the future, analysts said."Attracting private equity (PE) funds can help BlueStar draw investment capital and carry out strategic reform", Cheng Lei, an analyst with Ping An Securities, said.BlueStar considered several PE funds before choosing Blackstone, the world's largest PE company. BlueStar will become the US company's first investment in China.Blackstone executives Ben Jenkins and former Hong Kong financial secretary Antony Leung have been appointed by Blackstone to serve on BlueStar's board, the company said."We forecast (they) will bring new ideas to the State-owned company and help it transform," said Fu Yunfeng, an analyst with Ping An Securities.Ren Jianxin, president of ChemChina, said he believes Blackstone has sufficient investment experience in the chemicals industry because of its involvement with Celanese and Nalco.BlueStar is thirsting for global expansion. WASHINGTON - Post-menopausal Chinese women who eat a Western-style diet heavy in meat and sweets face a higher risk of breast cancer than their counterparts who stick to a typical Chinese diet loaded with vegetables and soy, a study found. The researchers, writing on Tuesday in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, tracked about 3,000 women in Shanghai, about half of whom were diagnosed with breast cancer. Post-menopausal women who ate a Western-style diet -- beef, pork, shrimp, chicken, candy, desserts and dairy products -- were 60 percent more likely to develop breast cancer than those eating a diet based on vegetables and soy, the study found. The study found the increased risk most acute for cancer involving so-called estrogen-receptor positive tumors. The post-menopausal women with the Western-style diet experienced a 90 percent increased risk for this type of breast cancer. One of the researchers, Marilyn Tseng of the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, said the study detected a much smaller increased breast cancer risk among younger women on a Western-style diet which was not statistically significant. Tseng noted that breast cancer rates among Asian women traditionally have been low but have been rising in recent years. Some experts have suspected that the adoption of a more Western diet may be at least partly to blame. "The increase in risk did appear to be due to the increase in red-meat intake," Tseng said in a telephone interview. "But we didn't do specific analyses to see if it could have been due to other parts of a western diet, like the high intake of desserts or high intake of dairy." The findings also suggested such a diet may increase breast cancer likelihood by increasing obesity, the researchers said. "We are the first to find evidence for an increased risk of breast cancer for a Western-style dietary pattern in an Asian population," the researchers wrote. They detected two dietary patterns in the women, who were diagnosed with their cancer from 1996 to 1998 and were subsequently interviewed about what they ate. One was a "vegetable-soy" pattern based on tofu, cauliflower, beans, bean sprouts and green leafy vegetables, with not much meat. The other was a "meat-sweet" pattern among women gravitating away from typical Chinese fare in favor of more Western foods. "Most studies have tended to look at single dietary factors. And what was unique about this study is that we tried to describe patterns of intake -- foods that go together, that seem to occur together in the diet," Tseng said.

Aerospace experts saved the country's first ever manned space mission as the spaceship faced a potentially lethal impact while flying through the communications blackout area before landing, the country's space authorities revealed yesterday.China became only the third country to put a man in space, after the former Soviet Union and the United States, when Yang Liwei orbited the Earth in 2003 in what was a resounding success for its space program.But Xinhua News Agency reported that this was almost not so, quoting the Xi'an Satellite Monitor and Control Center's report on the dangers the Shenzhou V rocket faced."Yang lost every means to communicate with the ground command and control headquarters as he entered the ( Earth atmosphere), which fell in the worst-case scenario prepared by the space mission team," Xinhua quoted Dong Deyi, head of the center, as saying.Communications go down when any spacecraft re-enters the Earth's atmosphere, but in Yang's case, "even radar could not capture any signal from the returning module", Dong was quoted as saying. "After the Shenzhou V came out of the blackout area, the echo signals from the spaceship were still volatile, which sufficiently threatened the safe landing of astronaut Yang."Mission control promptly ordered optical guiding and tracking instead of a communication-guided landing, Dong was quoted as saying."Aerospace technologists used cinetheodolites (optical trackers) on the ground to measure the spacecraft's position and record movements. Online computer games and their related services topped the complaint list of Chinese consumers last year, followed by telecom services and mobile phones respectively, the China Electronic Chamber of Commerce (CECC) said here on Saturday.     The website www.315ts.net, which falls under the CECC, received 55,817 complaints in 2007, up 23.2 percent year on year. In total,24,634 cases were related to online products and included online sales fraud, website ID information theft and online games complaints.     The chamber said complaints about refrigerators surged 114.37 percent year on year to 761 cases, the highest annual growth rate among grievances of all electronic product items.     More than 60 companies, including LG, TCL, Haier, Fuji and Canon, were rated as outstanding enterprises in dealing with customer complaints, according to the body.     The CECC also named and shamed 40 companies that did a poor job in handling customer complaints last year. These included industry and retail sales giants such as Philips, Carrefour, Shinco and Hitachi.
