SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego's Metropolitan Transit System announced today 40 local high school students who took part in an annual essay contest were awarded new laptop computers and backpacks.Students from more than 70 high schools around the county entered the MTS and Coca-Cola Laptop Scholarship Contest, which required the applicants to submit an essay on ways to get more students to use public transit such as lowering student transit passes.The winning students, from 27 schools, received a 15.6-inch HP Touch-Screen laptop and a Northface backpack that doubles as a laptop case. MTS officials honored the winning students on Friday at the 12th and Imperial Transit Center."It was great that winners came from so many campuses,'' said MTS CEO Paul Jablonski. "Their essays presented convincing ideas. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister reminded local property owners today to pay property taxes on time or face a hefty penalty. The first installment of the 2018-2019 secured property tax bill was due on Nov. 1 and will become delinquent after Dec. 10. ``So far, we have had 41 percent of taxpayers send us .3 billion in first installment payments,'' McAllister said. ``But we're coming up on the deadline, and we don't want anyone to have to pay a 10 percent penalty for being even a minute late.'' Online payments will be accepted until midnight on Dec. 10. Taxpayers should log on to sdtcc.com early and give themselves plenty of time to complete an e-check payment before the automatic midnight cutoff, according to McAllister. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego State University will not begin any of its fall sports earlier than Sept. 26 due to the ongoing pandemic, the university's athletics department announced Thursday.This follows guidance from the Mountain West Conference Board of Directors, which decided Wednesday to adjust conference team schedules to allow additional monitoring of ongoing COVID-19 developments and adjustments to keep student-athletes safe.The SDSU Aztecs football team will shrink its schedule to 10 games and most other fall sports will only play conference opponents."The Mountain West athletic directors and the conference office worked hard to develop a game plan for fall sports that will allow student- athletes to have a great experience and take in to account their health and well-being," said SDSU Director of Athletics John David Wicker. "Starting the season later allows us the opportunity to learn from professional sports and other conferences and continue to develop the best protocols possible to ensure the safest return to play model possible."The conference and school schedules align with the NCAA Board of Governors' directions, also released this week. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police Tuesday were searching for two men who carjacked a man at gunpoint in the parking lot of the Mission Valley mall.It happened around 7:35 p.m. Monday in the parking lot of the Nordstrom Rack at 1640 Camino Del Rio North, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.A man, whose age was not immediately available, was sitting in his blue 2007 Hyundai Sonata -- with California license plate 5XXK569 -- when two men approached the driver's side of his car, Buttle said.One of the men pulled out a black semi-automatic handgun and pointed it at the victim, demanding he give up his car, the officer said.The victim got out of the car and both men got in, then one of the men noticed the man's cell phone in the vehicle and demanded the passcode before the pair fled eastbound on Camino De La Reina in the Hyundai, Buttle said. 853
