ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - A beloved custodian at an elementary school in Encinitas is recovering after a spider bite led to an amputation."He's happy. He's smiling. Thankful he's alive," said Megan Luce, PTA President at Park Dale Lane Elementary School.Guil Aguilar has been a custodian at the school for more than five years."His spirits are so high when I visited," said Luce.Luce says his ordeal began at work, just before Thanksgiving break. Aguilar says as he was moving trash cans near a dumpster, he saw spiders but didn't think anything of it. After he left the area, he felt a twinge in his foot. He went with family to visit relatives in Arizona during Thanksgiving and his bite began to swell. He was admitted into a hospital, then transferred to an Encinitas hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with a venomous spider bite. The type of spider is unknown. The treatment was not enough."There was an infection that they tried to clean out. The infection resulted in amputation of his foot and partial leg," said Luce.Luce says Aguilar handled the difficult news by focusing on the bright side."He was okay with it. He'd rather his foot be gone than his life," said Luce.As news of his ordeal spread, parents at the school rallied."I was heartbroken. He's such as an amazing, amazing person ... Always happy. He's always there to help. Goes over and beyond what he's supposed to do at the school," said Luce.The parents organized a meal train and a Gofundme campaign to help his family, including his five children, with expenses."He's not just a janitor. He's part of the community and part of the Park Dale Lane family," said Luce.The Encinitas Union School District issued the following statement: "The situation that you are inquiring about involves one of our employees and is currently under investigation by the District. Due to privacy rights and confidentiality laws, we are unable to provide an update on the employee ... In an abundance of caution, the District has taken the necessary precautions to ensure that all areas of campus have been inspected and are safe. FALLBROOK (KGTV) - One person is dead after she was hit by a vehicle while walking along the shoulder of a road in Fallbrook with her husband.CHP officers say the 60-year-old woman was walking with her husband just after 5 p.m. northbound on the east shoulder in the 2700 block of Gird Road north of Laketree Drive. An approaching pickup truck heading northbound left the roadway and struck the woman. The truck stopped for a moment before fleeing the scene northbound on Gird Rd.North County Fire Protection District and CHP responded and crews began life saving measures at the scene, but the woman was pronounced dead. Her 60-year-old husband was not injured.The truck involved in the crash is described as an older model pickup truck that's dark in color. The truck will likely have damage to the right front side.Investigators were reviewing surveillance footage from the area to learn more about what happened.Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the suspected vehicle or information about the crash is asked to call CHP at 858-637-3800. 1060

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - The North County finally has its own comedy club. The Grand Comedy Club opened on Grand Avenue in Escondido late in 2019 and reports growing crowds over its first 10 weeks. "I think people need a good laugh, nowadays. It's really great to see people leaving here happy and telling their friends, and their friends refer their friends. It's great to bring something back to my hometown that the locals really dig and have fun at," said owner Adam Wasserman.Wasserman is a property manager who has performed as a part-time stand up comedian for 11 years. He began thinking of starting his own club, and wanted it to be in Escondido. "You had to go downtown or La Jolla to go to shows. It's a long way to go and and parking and everything. I always thought 'Why was there never a club here in North County?'" Wasserman said.The headliners are typically brought in from Los Angeles, while many of the supporting acts are comedians from San Diego. Wasserman says they're seeing ticket sales from across North County. "We have several nice restaurants, but after you have dinner, that's it. There's nowhere to go," said Escondido resident Jacqueline Lawhorn. "At least now you can come here and enjoy a night of comedy."The opening of the Grand Comedy Club is just the latest step in Escondido's attempt to revitalize its downtown area and make it into more of destination spot. The hope is to give locals an option to spend their money closer to home, and to draw people from neighboring cities into Escondido businesses."You'd have to go to La Jolla or Orange County or whatever," said attendee Gary Arant, who has already gone to several shows at the club. (KGTV) — A brush fire along Interstate 15 in Escondido forced several lanes of traffic to close as crews worked to douse flames.The brush fire was reported along northbound I-15, just after State route 78, at about 1 p.m., according to California Highway Patrol.The fire forced at least one lane closed on NB I-15, as well as the westbound connector of SR-78 to NB I-15 as of 2:20 p.m., Caltrans San Diego said. The closure lasted about two two hours.Hot and dry conditions Saturday have elevated fire risk throughout San Diego County, according to the National Weather Service. 605
