SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— Rady Children’s Hospital announced their partnership with Children's Specialized Hospital in New Jersey, to expand its opioid-free Pain Management Program.10News met 17-year-old Jasper Neale at Rady Children's Hospital. Neale said in the summer of 2014, he was at a junior lifeguards camp at Moonlight State Beach in Encinitas. When he was running on the sand, he fractured his heel. His family thought it was a straight forward injury. But the pain started to spread everywhere, making him immobile.“It went up my calf, and my whole leg and calf were getting really swollen,” Neale said. “It started with like a three out of ten, but it became a ten out of ten for my whole body.”His x-rays showed recovery, but his pain was not going away. The injury puzzled locals doctors. "They kind of just said, ‘We're not sure.’ This is the weirdest thing I've ever seen,” Neale said. Their last hope was the Children's Specialized Hospital in New Jersey, where they had an advanced chronic pain management program. There, the specialists told him his diagnosis: complex regional pain syndrome."You never take any drugs. You literally have nothing but yourself,” Neale said. Unlike traditional methods of pain relief, this program does not use any opioids.“People want a quick fix. The magic pill. The magic surgery to make everything get better, but most of the time, that's not available,” Andrew Skalsky, Division Chief of Rehabilitation Medicine at Rady Children’s Hospital, said. They have a tough love approach, combined with alternative therapies."I came in being unable to walk, and the very next day, they forced you to run. They forced you to swim."“Unfortunately with a lot of chronic pain patients, they actually have to somewhat create more pain to make themselves better, but then also giving them the emotional and psychological tool kit to cope with that pain,” Skalsky said.Today, Rady Children’s Hospital announced they too will be adopting this program, so in the future, patients like Neale can get the treatment they need closer to home. For Neale, it was a seven-week treatment in New Jersey that fixed his chronic nerve pain. He came back to Encinitas, not hooked on drugs. There were no side effects. "From the day I left to now, I can do everything I want to do,” Neale said. Neale’s recovery led to the discovery of a new passion. The 6’8” senior at San Dieguito Academy is now a star volleyball player. In the fall, he will play for the University of Toronto."Going from being completely dysfunctional, to being a fully functioning human, with only doing it through physical therapy and natural ways is amazing,” Neale said. Ready Children’s Hospital said this approach is not for all treatments. This one focuses solely on chronic pain. 2782

The suite has a bedroom, living area, bathroom and a small kitchen.Developers say the idea designed with let elderly relatives, adult children who move back home or relatives with special needs in mind."You’re still with the family, but you have that privacy to step away and still be independent," says Bill Ostrem, the San Diego Division President for Lennar Homes. "At the same time, if you want to engage with the family, the family wants to engage with you it’s right there."Lennar says they started developing these kinds of homes in 2011 in Arizona. They saw a need as more extended families began living together.The suites help with that.Currently, Lennar is building their "NextGen" homes in the Sterling Heights community near 4-S Ranch. Ostrem says it's become their most popular model.About 1/3 of all the homes they've sold in Sterling Heights have the extra suite. They have other developments with NextGen homes in 13 states."I think it just makes sense," says Austin Dias, a Co-Partner with The Phair Company. They're about to start construction on La Mesa Summit Estates just north of the 94 freeway near Lemon Grove. All 30 homes in that development will have a "Multi-Generational" suite.RELATED: Developer wants to build Multi-Generational housing in La MesaDias says they held a couple of community meetings during the planning stages. The overwhelming response they got was from families looking for these kinds of homes."We see this a lot in other countries," Dias says. "Now people in America are starting to embrace it."The homes are pricey. Models in Lennar's Sterling Heights development run between .7 and million. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Unlike many of its neighboring communities, San Diego’s Midway District does not have any tall skyscrapers. But the local planning commission is hoping that changes very soon. For the last 11 years, the Midway Pacific Highway community planning group has had a plan to modernize Midway. With the city’s lease of the Valley View Casino Center coming up in 2020, the group is hoping to share some big ideas.“What better way to create more housing than in Midway,” Cathy Kenton, Chair of the Midway Pacific Highway Community planning group, said.The advisory group’s goal is to rezone much of the 1,300-acre district, to encourage new, mixed-use construction. A big part of that would be the 11,000 new dwellings, which could increase the residential population from 3,000 to 23,000 in the next 30 years. Except there is one problem — the city’s 30-foot height limit.In 1972, San Diegans voted on Prop D, which limits all buildings west of I-5 in the area (Coastal Height Limit Overlay Zone), to 30 feet.The commission believes this outdated law is stifling its potential growth, literally.“40 feet would be terrific, 70 feet would be awesome,” Kenton said. “Anything that would help us get a little more vertical would certainly open up the community, and not make it so dense.”The commission’s current redevelopment renderings do not include any high-rises.“So they’re all very flat and pretty boring looking, to be honest,” Kenton said. But they are still presenting these plans to the Smart Growth and land use hearing and to city council next week.Kenton says getting that approved is only the first hurdle. She believes the only way that Midway can reach its highest potential is if Prop D is overturned by the voters.That requires a community petition or a city council vote to put the measure on the ballot. “No one has a crystal ball for whats going to happen,” Kenton said. Kenton says the likelihood of getting the measure on the June or November ballots is slim, but they will keep trying.Those opposed to it say, constructing tall buildings would obstruct ocean views. If residents eventually vote to overturn Prop D, the committee says they will go back to the drawing board, to include mostly middle and some low-income high-rise apartments. 2319

  

SAN DIEGO, CA (KGTV) - Four students have tested positive for COVID-19 in the Del Mar Union School District (DMUSD).The district has since launched a dashboard on its website to inform the school community about any active cases at each school.“We’re just being very transparent and keeping families informed,” said Jenni Huh, the Director of Student Services for DMUSD.Two students tested positive for COVID-19 at Sage Canyon School, one student tested positive at Sycamore Ridge School, and another student tested positive at Torrey Hills School.“We received the results directly from the families, and we were able to respond very quickly,” said Huh. “I’m very happy to say that they are doing very well, and we have not had any other cases.”Huh said all students and staff who came in contacted with those who tested positive are quarantined for 14 days.“If we learned of a presumed positive case, we would treat it exactly as the same way that we would respond to a confirmed positive,” she added.Parents are also notified if their child was potentially exposed to someone who possibly came in contact with someone who tested positive.At Sage Canyon, parents learned of the two positive COVID-19 cases over the weekend.By Monday, students in the two impacted classrooms were able to transition back to online learning.They will continue online learning during the two-week quarantine.DMUSD Superintendent Holly McClurg said district officials developed a Safe Reopening Plan over the summer to respond to these situations. She said the methods worked as expected.“To see children not miss a beat with their instruction has been great,” she said.While many parents may still have concerns sending their children off to school knowing this could happen at any moment, McClurg said the district’s goal is to be transparent and work with families to make the transition back to in-person learning go as smoothly as possible. 1933
