SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Residents in a South San Diego Apartment complex worked together to fight a fire that started in the patio.At around 10:45 Sunday morning, San Diego City Fire Rescue teams responded to the 1700 block of Oro Vista Road. Heavy smoke was billowing from the patio of a downstairs apartment. "I called 911 automatically, and that's when the person who lives upstairs came running out,” Alexa Delgado said.Delgado had just arrived at the Oro Vista Villas to visit her mother when she saw the flames. "It started popping, and the fire started coming out,” she said. It was in that moment of chaos that she found herself and several neighbors step up to help. One neighbor pulled the smoke alarm, others smashed fire extinguisher boxes and started spraying down the patio, and she protected the neighbor's pet birds, all before the fire department arrived. Engine 30’s Fire Captain, John Wilson said what the residents did in the first minutes of the fire helped suppress the flames. "There was an alarm that was going off upon our arrival, so the smoke detectors did their jobs and got everyone out safely,” Captain Wilson said. Delgado says what happened today was a true testament to the word “community.”“A bunch of neighbors helping and asking if anyone living there, went upstairs to see if anyone was in there and helping out."Fire investigators are still looking into what exactly caused the patio fire.  No one was inside the home when the flames ignited. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Major changes to the way people vote has election advocates on edge as Californians cast ballots in the Democratic presidential contest and other primary races. The “Super Tuesday” primary in the country's most populous state comes amid changes aimed at expanding voter participation, including new voting equipment and vote centers that are replacing polling places in some counties. Those changes may confuse some people. There are fears California might end up with a mess much worse than Iowa, where the Democratic Party couldn't declare a winner for several days. San Diego (KGTV)- Parents at several San Diego County high schools have been notified that students could have been exposed to Pertussis, also known as whooping cough. Carlsbad High School confirmed two cases last week. Monday, parents at Mt. Carmel High School were notified that students at that school may have been exposed to the infection, though it wasn't clear how many confirmed cases there have been at the school. “This is probably the most contagious bacterial disease,” says Eric McDonald, with the county’s Health and Human Services Department. “For every one person who has it, when they expose people who have not had or been immunized, they can infect up to 16 or 17 other people.”McDonald says symptoms of a typical cold are a runny nose, low-grade fever, and a cough. For someone who may have pertussis “its the persistence of the cough that should be the number one clue.”So far this year, in San Diego County, there have been over 70 confirmed cases of pertussis. “The number of cases in San Diego are higher than most of California, particularly for infants under the age of four months.”If your child has a cough that lasts almost two weeks, they should be treated by a doctor. McDonald recommends everyone get the DTaP shot to lower the risk of getting pertussis, especially pregnant women in their third trimester. 1347

San Diego (KGTV)- The entertainment world is left in shock after the death of Chadwick Boseman. The Hollywood star lost his battle with colon cancer. He was just 43 years old. Local physicians are stressing the importance of getting screened.For four years, the actor fought a silent battle with this cancer. He was diagnosed in his late 30's, much younger than the age many get tested."What we have seen is in younger people, the rates of colon cancer are going up and have actually gone up every decade, and the reasons for that are not known," says Dr. Abi Olulade with Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group.Olulade says the rates of colon cancer are higher in the African American community."Not only is there an increased rate in colon cancer, but there's an increased chance of dying from this if you are African American," says Olulade.The American Cancer Society estimates 12-percent of colorectal cancer diagnosis this year will be in people under the age of 50."People have put off their screening, which is dangerous," says Dr. Walter Coyle with the Scripps MD Anderson Cancer Center.Coyle says due to the pandemic, fewer patients are coming in for screenings."The American Cancer Society says we should start screening people at age 45 and up now. All the other societies say 50 unless you're African American."Coyle says a healthy diet can help lower the risks of this cancer. He hopes the news of famous actor Chadwick Boseman will encourage people to get their screenings."I couldn't imagine someone that young and vigorous dying.
