News helicopters in Philadelphia captured demonstrations turning into lawlessness as several people were seen breaking into businesses Tuesday evening.Philadelphia Police said that a crowd of approximately 1,000 people were looting a business in Philadelphia on Tuesday.The unrest began on Monday after Walter Wallace Jr., a 27-year-old Black man, was shot and killed by officers in Philadelphia. Spokesperson Tanya Little of the Philadelphia Police said that Wallace was ordered to drop a knife before being shot by officers.The incident was captured on video from a bystander, and Little confirmed that two of the officers were wearing body worn cameras. Whether that video will be publicly released will be determined in the coming days.Video of the incident showed officers pointing a weapon at Wallace. After trying to back away from Wallace, officers then fired at him.Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said that a full investigation of what transpired is underway.Shaka Johnson, an attorney representing the Wallace family, told the Inquirer that family called for an ambulance and not officers. NEW YORK (AP) — A new government report shows that since the coronavirus pandemic began, the U.S. has seen 300,000 more deaths than it usually would.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been tracking how many deaths have been reported and comparing them with counts seen in other years. Usually, between the beginning of February and the end of September, about 1.9 million deaths are reported. This year, it’s closer to 2.2 million – a 14.5% increase.The CDC says the coronavirus was involved in about two-thirds of the excess deaths. CDC officials say it’s likely the virus was a factor in many other deaths too. For example, someone with heart attack symptoms may have hesitated to go to a hospital that was busy with coronavirus patients.The largest segment of the excess deaths, about 95,000, were in elderly people ages 75 to 84. That was 21.5% more than in a normal year. But the biggest relative increase, 26.5%, was in people ages 25 to 44. Deaths in people younger than 25 actually dropped slightly.Deaths were up for different racial and ethnic groups, but the largest increase – 54% – was among Hispanic Americans.According to a printed study in the Journal of Hospital Medicine, since the pandemic began, the mortality rate among hospitalized patients dropped by 18 percentage points.Researchers said the patients in the study now have a 7.6% chance of dying, whereas they had a 25.6% chance of dying at the start of the pandemic. 1465

New security measures were enforced as students of Santa Fe High School in Texas returned for the new school year Monday.The security changes come after a student opened fire on May 18, killing 10 students.The most noticeable security addition: metal detectors. Other renovations at the high school include the installation of bullet-proof glass, a secure entrance vestibule and even panic buttons in the classrooms. Interior doors were upgraded to lock from the inside and outside and 500 security cameras were installed district wide. Additionally, the school hired extra police offers, five of which will work fulltime.“Well, it's a very typical reaction from what we’ve seen in a lot of schools in the wake of spring of ’18,” says Amy Klinger.Klinger, a school safety expert with The Educator’s School Safety Network, says on one hand she’s glad to see more schools like Santa Fe investing in new measures, but she cautions money also needs to be spent on the teachers, too.“Are we combining buying stuff with actually training people?” asks Klinger. “Probably a single point of entry is a good idea, but not if you haven't provided people with training on how to screen visitors who are coming in.”Since teachers themselves are the first line of defense, The Educators School Safety Network is urging all schools to consider training faculty to better recognize out of ordinary behavior.“We know that anywhere between 80 to 85 percent of all perpetrators are students in that school, so who is working with those students?
