Voters in Mississippi voted to approve a new state flag design.Lawmakers took action this summer to retire the former Mississippi state flag, which contained the Confederate battle emblem. The rebel symbol is widely seen as racist. In the last two months, the process to design and vote on a new flag has moved fast. There was a call to artists to help design a new flag. By law, the new flag must include the phrase, “In God We Trust,” and could not include any depictions of the Confederate battle flag. The designs were narrowed to five based on a public online vote and feedback. Then a commission narrowed it down to a final option. That option, including a magnolia, the state flower, and red, blue and yellow bands, was on the ballot for voters to approve. 766

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former special counsel Robert Mueller is sharply defending his investigation into ties between Russia and Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign. Mueller writes in a newspaper opinion piece Saturday that the probe was of “paramount importance” and asserts that Trump ally Roger Stone “remains a convicted felon, and rightly so” despite the president’s decision to commute his prison sentence. The op-ed in The Washington Post marks Mueller’s first public statement on his investigation since his congressional appearance last July. It's his firmest defense of the two-year probe whose results have come under attack and even been partially undone by the Trump administration.RELATED: President Trump commutes prison sentence of political ally Roger Stone 783

WASHINGTON (AP) — More than a million Americans sought unemployment benefits last week. That's the word from a Labor Department report that indicates companies are cutting more jobs as the coronavirus surges through the Sunbelt and some of the nation’s most populous states. Layoffs in Florida, Georgia and California rose by tens of thousands. The number of laid-off workers seeking assistance remained stuck at 1.3 million. That number is lower than the previous week but still illustrates the devastation wrought by widespread shutdowns. The U.S. has now suffered 17 straight weeks of jobless claims in the millions as the country continues to combat the novel coronavirus.Case counts are rising in 40 states and 22 states have either paused or reversed their efforts to reopen their economies, according to Bank of America. 832

VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - The generosity and hard work of a Vista kindergarten student is helping hundreds of other children. Katelynn Hardee of Breeze Hill Elementary overheard a student’s mother saying she had a hard time paying for an after-school program. Katelynn asked her mom if they could open a hot cocoa and cookie stand to raise money for other families. RELATED: San Diego grandmother grateful for man's random act of kindness“I said ‘let’s do it’, and all proceeds would go to charity; I didn’t know at that point if we could donate to the lunch program,” Katelynn’s mother Karina told the Vista Unified School District. With sales as hot as the cocoa, the stand raised enough money to pay off hundreds of lunch balances for students. “Because of her generosity, 123 students in the Vista Unified School District had their account balances paid off,” says Jamie Phillips, Director of Child Nutrition Services for Vista Unified School District.” “It is truly inspiring to see Katelynn's compassion and generous nature utilized to help those less fortunate. Students like Katelynn embody the mission and values of Vista Unified School District."
