(KGTV) - A group of Massachusetts police officers and firefighters are being hailed as heroes after coming to the aid of a choking puppy this week.North Reading resident Megan Vitale stormed into a police station Sunday telling officers her 9-week-old Saint Bernard puppy, Bodhi, was choking on food. An acquaintance came running in with Bodhi shortly after, the puppy limp and unresponsive in his arms, surveillance footage from the station showed.A group of officers came running out to begin administering first aid to the puppy. A group of North Reading firefighters also arrived at the station to help with back blows and chest compressions. RELATED: Beloved lizard missing from Spring Valley pet storeAfter 10 minutes, the food blockage was finally dislodged and Bodhi was revived."Ultimately, a life was saved thanks to rescuers falling back on their training and remaining calm. Even though we are not faced with this kind of incident every day, the officers reacted just as they would in any emergency situation," North Reading Police Chief Murphy said. ¡°We are hopeful that the puppy will make a full recovery."Firefighters used a special oxygen tank designed for pets to help Bodhi get breathing again."Many of our firefighters have pets at home in their own families. We do not get to choose the emergency situation that comes our way, so it is important that first responders be prepared for anything," Fire Chief Stats said.Bodhi was able to leave with Vitale to receive follow-up care from a veterinarian, according to the police department. 1599

(KGTV) -- A small plane was forced to land on a freeway in San Clemente Monday, but no injuries were reported and no vehicles were hit.According to the California Highway Patrol, the emergency landing was reported shortly before 12:50 p.m. on southbound Interstate 5 near Basilone Road, north of Camp Pendleton.CHP officials said the pilot was flying from John Wayne Airport in Orange County to San Diego¡¯s Montgomery Field when his plane began having mechanical issues while over Camp Pendleton.The pilot, who has 18 years of flying experience, was aware he needed to land immediately and considered Highway 101 [Old Pacific Highway parallel to I-5] as an emergency landing spot before choosing I-5, according to the CHP.The pilot was able to wait for a break in vehicles before guiding the aircraft safely onto the freeway. The plane landed and came to a stop on the No. 4 lane before it was eventually moved to the right shoulder.The aircraft remained on the shoulder and off the freeway lanes as of 2:20 p.m.The pilot, who was the aircraft's only occupant, was unhurt, an FAA official told ABC 10News. The official said the plane was a single-engine Piper PA24.The CHP said the pilot credited his experience and luck for safely landing the plane. 1258

(CNN) -- Police in Tennessee arrested a man named Tupac A. Shakur, 40, after they say he pulled a knife on them and was found with methamphetamine.Officers with the Johnson City Police Department, about 25 minutes from Bristol, received calls Friday about Shakur who had active warrants for his arrest from another department, according to a news release from Johnson police.When officers arrived at the scene, they saw a car with Shakur inside. Officers attempted to arrest Shakur, but he pulled away and reached for his waistband, the release said.Shakur then turned toward officers with a knife before officers took him down. Officers found a syringe and baggies of meth on Shakur, the release said.Shakur was charged with aggravated assault, simple meth possession and having unlawful drug paraphernalia. He is being held at the Washington County Detention Center on a ,000 bond. He is set to be arraigned Monday, the release said.It was not clear Sunday whether Shakur has legal representation.Shakur shares the same name, even the same middle initial, as the late rapper Tupac Shakur who was killed in September 1996 at age 25. 1144

(KGTV) ¡ª After a weeks-long closure due to mudslides and debris, Highway 18 from San Bernardino to Big Bear Lake has reopened.The highway has been closed since February after heavy rainfall prompted mudslides in some areas, forcing crews to repair damage to the highway.Snow fell on Big Bear Mountain Resort Wendesday with more snow expected Thursday night into Friday, continuing the mountain's flurry of snowfall this season. Currently, officials say they have about 60 inches of snow at the resort's peak and 44 inches at its base.This season, 128 inches of snow have hit the resort, making it prime for locals looking to ski, board, or just frolic in the snow this season.The route into Snow Valley Mountain Resort also reopened as the resort saw 34 inches of snow by Saturday morning. 797

But the urge has backfired on a French couple, who are facing up to six years in prison for removing sand from a beach in Sardinia, where they had been on vacation.The Italian island's white sand is protected, and tourists face fines and even jail time for removing it from local beaches -- but the couple say they did not realize they were committing a crime.Police in the northern city of Porto Torres found the sand while making routine checks on cars waiting to board a ferry to Toulon in southern France.They spotted some bottles filled with sand through the window of the car, and arrested the couple, a man and woman in their 40s, police told CNN.Overall, 14 plastic bottles containing around 40 kilograms (88 pounds) of white sand were seized, police said.The couple were reported to a court in the city of Sassari for aggravated theft and they risk a fine of up to €3,000 (,300) and between one and six years' imprisonment.Police told CNN that the tourists said they were unaware of the laws about removing sand, but noted that the island's beaches have signs in several languages informing visitors.Theft of white sand and rocks from Sardinia's beaches is very common, a police officer said, and there is an illegal market for them on the internet."The people of Sardinia are very angry with tourists that steal shells and sand, because it's a theft (from) future generations that also puts at risk a delicate environment," the officer told CNN.Sand thieves are usually picked up at airports, in bag searches and by scanners.A Facebook page, "Sardegna Rubata e Depredata" -- "Sardinia, robbed and plundered" -- which was set up by a group of security officials from the island's airports, campaigns against the depletion of Sardinia's beaches."The purpose of the page is to raise public awareness about this problem," one of the page administrators previously told CNN Travel."During the last 20 years of activity we have seized tens and tens of tons of material ...
