HONG KONG – Hong Kong authorities on Wednesday withdrew an unpopular extradition bill that sparked months of chaotic protests that have since morphed into a campaign for greater democratic change. "As a result of the divided views of the public regarding the (extradition) bill, there have been conflicts in the society," Secretary for Security John Lee told the city's legislature. Lee said the administration decided to suspend the amendment exercise after studying the matter. “For this purpose I wrote to the president of Legco (Legislative Council) to withdraw the notice to resume the second reading of the bill,” Lee said. “And as a result, the Legislative Council meeting stopped handling the bill. Thereafter, the administration stated many times that the revision has come to a halt. For the purpose of spelling out clearly the position of the special administrative region government, in the accordance of Rule 64(2), I formally announce the withdrawal of the bill.” Pro-democracy lawmakers immediately tried to question him but he refused to respond and the assembly's president said the rules did not allow for debate. The long-expected scrapping of the bill was overshadowed by the drama surrounding the release from a Hong Kong prison of the murder suspect at the heart of the extradition case controversy.Chan Tong-kai told reporters after leaving prison that he was willing to turn himself into authorities in Taiwan, where he is wanted for the killing of his girlfriend. He was released after serving a separate sentence for money laundering offenses.Chan could not be sent to Taiwan because there's no extradition agreement in place.Hong Kong's leader had amendments in a bid to eliminate the loophole, but it sparked widespread protests over concerns it put residents at risk of being sent into mainland China's murky judicial system. 1868

BILOXI, Miss. – In the lobby of one Mississippi hotel, people aren’t the only ones checking in and out – so are the dogs. “They see that cage. They're like, ‘What is it?’” said the hotel’s director of sales, Teresa Johnston. The gazebo-like kennel is the temporary home for Basil, a 6-month-old terrier mix up for adoption from a local shelter and ready for checkout in the hotel’s lobby. “The guest just gives us their room number and the sweet little puppy goes up,” Johnston said. If the guest wants to adopt them, the dog goes home with them upon checkout. It’s part of a partnership between this Home2 Suites hotel near Biloxi, and the Humane Society of South Mississippi. The idea is Johnston’s brainchild. “It's that simple,” she said. “And they've given us the ability to adopt right from the property.” The hotel hosts one shelter dog at a time; all are already spayed and neutered. It’s an out-of-the box effort to try to bring down overcrowding at the local animal shelter. “We have to go out into our community and get a little bit more involved in ways that people wouldn't really associate an animal shelter with,” said Bianca Janik, with the Humane Society of South Mississippi. “And so that's a big part of why this program is so successful, is because they don't expect to see a shelter dog.” Since the program began late last year, more than 30 dogs have been adopted at the hotel by people who fell for those puppy dog eyes. The hotel is seeing an added benefit, too. “A lot of people stay at this hotel because of this program,” Johnston said. “And a lot of people spread the love.” Puppy love, that is.In addition to the hotel in Biloxi, another hotel in Mississippi has also started a similar dog adoption program. 1751

BALTIMORE, Md. – In the Matthew Henson community of Baltimore, Dr. Marvin “Doc” Cheatham knows the neighborhood’s numbers. “These are rowhouses. 40 or 50 of them in a block,” he said, “1,200 houses; total 363 vacant or boarded up houses. It’s awful.” His Baltimore neighborhood is no stranger to challenges. “It’s tough. Very poor. High crime. High dropout rate. Open air drug markets,” Dr. Cheatham said. McKean Park, though, may be the start of something new. The abandoned homes that once sat there are now gone – and have a new purpose. “We take it, we clean it up and we give it new life,” said Max Pollock with Brick and Board, a place where old wood finds new life. They are just one of several groups involved in the “Baltimore Wood Project.” “They came from a really, really old structure,” Pollock said, as he showed off a 200-year-old piece of lumber. The idea works like this: before an abandoned building is torn down, crews salvage all the materials they can get from it – like wood – and keep it out of landfills. At the same time, they give the people who live in those neighborhoods the job of doing that. “It gives you a new sense of your community,” said Baltimore native Kobe Bland, who works at Brick and Board. “You start to view your community a little different because you see the potential of what could be.” What started out as the “Baltimore Wood Project,” though, is now evolving into the “Urban Wood Project,” with the hope it could be replicated in other cities.” In just four years, they’ve salvaged one million square feet of wood. The USDA Forest Service is spearheading the project and the work to expand it. “This is wood for example locked up in these vacant and abandoned rowhomes that would otherwise be wasted – sent to the landfill or otherwise wasted – and we see the potential to capture and reuse that wood for a greater good,” said Sarah Hines of the USDA Forest Service, who has worked on the project in Baltimore. Back in his neighborhood, Doc Cheatham said he’s seen what kind of change it can bring. “It brings hope,” he said. It’s a hope that comes from salvaging the past, to try and build a better future. 2171

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is checking himself into a hospital Saturday after revealing he tested positive for COVID-19, he said in a tweet. In consultation with my doctors, I checked myself into Morristown Medical Center this afternoon. I want to thank all of my friends and colleagues who have reached out to ask how I was feeling in the last day or two. I will be receiving medical attention today and will keep the necessary folks apprised of my condition,” Christie tweeted Saturday morning. I am thankful for our hardworking medical professionals and look forward to coming home soon.— Governor Christie (@GovChristie) October 3, 2020 Christie assisted President Donald Trump with debate preparations earlier this week.Trump is being treated for COVID-19 at Walter Reed Hospital after announcing early Friday that he and first lady Melania had tested positive. This story was first reported by Stephen M. "It's weird being a 16 year old these days," Reid Sotkin said. You could say Sotkin is just your average kid. He's a junior at Jenks High School who likes to hang out with friends. And oh, by the way, he's an investment guru."I just googled what books Warren Buffet recommended and that's kind of how I got my start," Sotkin said. One of his favorite books?"Actually this book right here," he said. "'The Intelligent Investor' taught me quite a bit."Sotkin is so passionate about investing, he's become a source of advice for friends young and old."I started investing myself and then all my friends started asking me what they should invest into and stuff," he said. Now, he's combining his love of investing and his passion for coding to develop an app to teach people how to invest wisely."There's a feature on the app where you put in your salary and how long until you retire, all your bills and everything," Sotkin said. Sotkin's app, "Calculating The Future," is an award winning app."It tells you how much you have to put in each month into each of them and it tells you how much money you'll have when you retire," he said. Sotkin appeared before a panel of judges on a Zoom call, answered all kinds of questions, and won the 2020 Congressional App Challenge."I guess they just chose me to win and then Congressman Hern gave me a phone call one afternoon. Yeah, I was pretty surprised," he said. Sotkin puts his money where his mouth is. He plans on living comfortably. So, he's investing now."I do a couple hundred dollars every month," Sotkin said. "So, I just do that so that way I'll have a couple million dollars by the time I retire just sitting in the background."During our Zoom interview, I just couldn't resist getting some advice about my own investment advisor, 2 Works For You's Chief Meteorologist Mike Collier."He's kind of been giving me some stock tips and they've been kind of terrible," I said as Sotkin laughed. "So, give Mike some advice on how he should invest in the stock market.""Basically, unless you're very smart and spending a lot of time, you're not going to beat the market," Sotkin said.Sotkin said he likes the S&P500. It represents 500 very reliable companies."That's gone up an average of 9.8% since its inception," Sotkin said. "That's the way to go. Just put it in index funds and let it accumulate over 30, 40, 50 years."The future is looking bright for this young entrepreneur and it could be for you, too. Sotkin said it's all about starting early, being consistent, and taking advantage of compound interest."Do you mind if I ask about your net worth right now," I asked."Yeah, but ah... I don't want to say right now," he answered. This story originally reported by Mike Brooks on KJRH.com. 2763
