Gavin Newsom ordered that flags at the state Capitol be flown at half-staff Tuesday in honor of the eight Marines and one Navy sailor who died when an amphibious assault vehicle sank during a training mission last week near San Clemente Island."Jennifer and I were heartbroken to learn of the loss of nine service members in an accident off San Clemente Island," Newsom said in a statement. "It is a painful reminder of the sacrifice of members of our armed forces, who put their lives on the line for us. Medics took two of them to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, where both were admitted in critical status. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 16-year-old boy was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries he sustained in a stabbing attack in the Egger Highlands area.The victim and a friend were in the 1500 block of Thermal Avenue at 10:30 p.m. Friday when a dark-colored vehicle pulled up next to them and two suspects got out of the back and began fighting with the victim, according to Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.The suspects threw a bottle at the victim and stabbed him in the hip, then jumped back in the vehicle, which was last seen southbound on Thermal Avenue, Heims said.The boy was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Heims said.A detailed description of the suspects was not available. 737

(KGTV) -- The two soldiers killed in an aircraft accident on San Clemente Island have been identified, the U.S. Army Special Operations Command said Saturday.According to the news release, 33-year-old Staff Sgt. Vincent P. Marketta of New Jersey and 22-year-old Sgt. Taylor M. Shelton of San Bernardino died on August 27 during an aviation training mishap.Marketta enlisted in the Army in 2011 as a 15T UH-60 Black Hawk Repairer and was assigned to the 160th Special Operations Regiment. While assigned to the unit, Marketta deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He also deployed multiple times to Iraq for Operation Inherent Resolve, according to the Army.Shelton enlisted in the Army in 2016 also as a 15T UH-60 Black Hawk Repairer and was assigned to the same unit as Marketta. During his service, Shelton deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.“The loss of Staff Sgt. Marketta and Sgt. Shelton has left a scar in this Regiment that will never completely heal,” said Col. Andrew R. SAN DIEGO — A growing number of restaurants in San Diego want to wall off the parking spots outside their front doors and replace them with tables.The concept is called a Parklet, and the city of San Diego appears to be ready to embrace it - at least until social distancing mandates lift. "It's San Diego. We're getting the most beautiful weather of the year. Let us have some seats out there. Let us have some tables," said Merritte Powell, who owns La Puerta restaurant on 4th Avenue. Powell is readying an application to the city that would allow him to build on a curbside section of the street in front of his restaurant and put more seating. He says it's key to survive amid social distancing restrictions, which have limited his capacity. In fact, La Puerta even with hourlong waits still only pulls in 50 percent of the revenue it would have made before the Coronavirus outbreak. On bad days, revenue drops by as much as 70 percent. "Because of the way the seating is, because of the social distancing, stuff like that, I'm nowhere near where I need to be," Powell said. On July 7, the City Council will consider an urgency ordinance that would waive some fees for Parklets and help streamline their construction. Restaurants from downtown, Little Italy and North Park are all readying applications. The opportunity could help level the playing field for restaurants on streets that cannot be closed to vehicle traffic for on-street dining. The city has already permitted road closures on 5th Avenue and India Street for restaurants to expand. A stretch of North Park could be next.
