(CNN) -- The US believes late al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden's son Hamza bin Laden is dead, a US official told CNN on Wednesday.The official said the US had a role in his death but did not provide details. The official added that the US government recently received evidence that it believes corroborates his death.The New York Times reported that Hamza bin Laden had been killed in an operation within the last two years.Earlier this year the US State Department called bin Laden, who is believed to be in his early 30s, an "emerging" leader in the terror group al Qaeda, offering a million-dollar reward for information leading to his capture.The New York Times, citing two US officials, said "the United States government had a role in the operation that killed the younger Mr. bin Laden, but it was not clear precisely what that role was."CNN terrorism analyst Paul Cruickshank said one thing is puzzling researchers who are closely tracking al Qaeda: "If Hamza bin Laden has indeed been dead for months, you would expect al Qaeda to have released some form of eulogy before today. (KGTV) — An inmate convicted of sexually assaulting a minor in San Diego was killed during an attack inside a California corrections facility this week.Officials said on Thursday, 41-year-old Jonathan Watson attacked two inmates with a weapon at California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility, and State Prison in Corcoran. Both inmates suffered head wounds and were taken to a local medical center.One inmate, 48-year-old David Bobb, died from his injuries while being taken to the hospital. Bobb was sentenced in San Diego on Oct. 17, 2015 to life in prison with the possibility of parole for aggravated sexual assault of a child under 14 years old.The other injured inmate is in critical condition at a local hospital.Officials say Watson has been serving a life sentence for first-degree murder and intentionally discharging a firearm causing great bodily injury or death.The prison specializes in substance abuse treatment and houses more than 5,400 inmates. 970

(KGTV) — A 5.5-magnitude earthquake was reported near the Ridgecrest area late Wednesday.The quake occurred at about 6:30 p.m. in the Searles Valley area, about 14 miles outside of Ridgecrest, Calif., according to the USGS. Several smaller earthquakes measuring between 2.6 and 2.9 magnitude in the nearby Trona, Calif., area were recorded after the initial shakeup. A 4.2 magnitude aftershock was also felt in the area around 8 p.m. Wednesday night. No injuries or major damage were initially reported.According to the USGS' "Did You Feel It?" map, no San Diego County responses were immediately submitted.The last major earthquakes to hit near Ridgecrest occurred on July 4 and 5, 2019, when 6.4- and 7.1-magnitude earthquakes jostled the region. 756
