SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the number of vaping-related illnesses continues to rise across the country, local leaders are seeing a spike in marijuana vape users in San Diego. The DEA and local health officials are now laying out their plans to stop the crisis in our county. The number of people who have used marijuana vaping in San Diego has grown, including users who are underage. A study done by SANDAG shows 70 percent of juveniles and 61 percent of adults have reported vaping with THC products. The DEA says the best way to combat the spike is to crack down on illegal extraction labs. "The creation of the vaping cartridge process is not controlled in any way, shape, or form," says Assistant Special Agent in Charge Colin Ruane. "There's no quality control; there's no testing of the product. So when you get the THC, you don't know what you're getting and what you're inhaling."The DEA says the extraction of THC also poses a safety risk to the community. Four extraction labs have caused a fire or explosion in various areas around the county. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed over 1,800 cases of vaping related illnesses in the U.S. Many of those admitted to using THC products. 37 people have died. The DEA is working with its partners and other local organizations to continue to get the word out on the dangers of vaping. 1368

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Another local man says he was shaken down by Mexican police, as Tijuana officials announced an investigation into the alleged incidents.Since January, 69-year-old Lupe Adame has been driving his truck back and forth from Escondido to Tijuana to help his friend renovate a home. On a Wednesday night in mid-June, he was returning from Tijuana, blocks from driving up to the line to cross the border, when he saw the police lights."Police car got over on my driver side and he said, 'Pull over!' ... Nowhere to stop, so I stopped in the middle of the road," said Adame.Adame says a heavyset officer in his 40s went to his door and told him he was being stopped because he had tinted windows.RELATED: San Diego couple says Tijuana shakedown possibly prompted by COVID-19 restrictions"And then I heard the back of my pickup open ... tailgate drop down ... I looked and my stuff was gone! So angry," said Adame.Adame says a second officer had grabbed all his tools — worth nearly 0 — and placed them the police car's back seat. A stunned Adame says they patted him down and emptied his pockets, including his wallet."When I looked at my wallet, I realized that this guy took my money. I said, 'You just robbed me.' He said, 'Shut up!'" said Adame.More than 0 in cash had disappeared. He says the officer then let him go and told him to not come back. At the border crossing, he reported the incident to a US Customs and Border Protection officer."She says, 'You know what, you're the third person it happened to in my lane, including someone who was robbed of 0,'" said Adame. On Thursday, ABC 10News reported on a similar account from Tom, a San Diego retiree who says he was also shaken down several weeks ago by Mexican officers, officers who explained their COVID-related motive."They're just going to pull over Americans and take whatever money they have because the people in Tijuana are hurting really bad because the border is closed," said Tom, who asked us not use his real name.Since March, non-essential travel has been banned by both governments to limited coronavirus infections. In a statement, a spokesperson for the city of Tijuana called any shakedown, "an evil act," while announcing they will investigate "to apply the corresponding sanctions."The State Department tells 10News they are monitoring the situation, but declined further comment on any investigation. 2412

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - California State Assemblyman Todd Gloria emerged as the early leader in the primary contest for San Diego mayor, however half of likely voters were undecided, according to an exclusive 10News/Union-Tribune poll released Friday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Back to school routines aren’t just for kids; parents must also get in the habit of alarms, rides, and packing lunches. While children may be content with processed and sugary snacks, it’s up to moms and dads to keep lunches healthy.Empty calories are a concern, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Added sugars and solid fats contribute to 40 percent of the daily calories for children. About half of the empty calories come from soda, fruit drinks, dairy or grain desserts, pizza, and whole milk.Dr. Nimali Fernando is a Virginia-based pediatrician who founded The Doctor Yum Project and co-wrote the book “Raising a Healthy, Happy Eater: A Parent’s Handbook”.“School lunches may not seem significant in a child’s life, but when you add up that they are eating them five days per week it’s quite a lot of their calorie consumption,” said Dr. Fernando. “Teaching them healthy lunch habits from a young age will give them the tools to build lifelong healthy habits.”Dr. Yum recommends steps for preparing healthy school lunches.Meal planning: Get a head start on the week’s meals by planning during the weekend. You can save time on your shopping list if you’re well prepared.Buy in bulk: Instead of expensive individually-packed snacks, opt for bulk purchases of items like dried fruit and trail mix.Pack leftovers: If you cook extra food at dinner, you can put some aside for your child’s lunch the next day.Cook or bake: Why buy muffins when you can bake a batch and save money? You also have more control over the ingredients. Additional items can be put in the freezer.Skip the sugar: Sweet drinks are expensive and add extra sugar to your child’s meals. The CDC says sugary beverages account for 10 percent of the calories in children’s diets. You can always send them to school with a reusable container for water.Change it up: Break free of the PB&J mold with an addition like bananas or whole wheat tortillas. Send a smoothie: You can get extra nutrition with frozen fruits and vegetables in smoothies. Keep frozen food on hand to blend. The smoothies can go back into the freezer until they’re ready to eat. 2162

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- California roads have some of the worst drivers in the entire country, according to a new ranking.Finance website SmartAsset reports that California ties with Missouri to take third on the list for states with the worst drivers. In order to rank states, the site looked at the percentage of drivers with insurance, the number of DUIs per driver, the average number of deaths per miles driven and how often residents Google terms like traffic ticket or speeding ticket.California ranked 12th for DUIs per thousand drivers and 11th for percentage of uninsured drivers. The Golden State also ranked 32nd for number of people killed per 100 million miles driven. It may give some comfort to know that California wasn’t ranked first. That honor was given to Mississippi followed by Tennessee.More California rankings: 839
