SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the Valley Fire raged across parts of eastern San Diego County, emergency assistance workers put into action plans they'd been working on for months to handle the dual disaster of a wildfire during a pandemic."It completely changed our approach," says Red Cross Regional CEO Sean Mahoney.The Red Cross has been planning and training for months, knowing this situation would likely arise this fall.Mahoney says their plan included Temporary Evacuation Points instead of group shelters, hotel rooms for people who needed somewhere to stay, grab and go or delivery meals, and an emphasis on sanitation and health screenings to keep volunteers and evacuees safe."We planned for this as much as we possibly could, but exercise is just an exercise. Doing the real thing is where you have those real lessons learned," Mahoney says.During the Valley Fire, the Red Cross assisted 440 people in 174 families. They served around 9,000 meals and snacks.Mahoney says his staff's dedication, along with 107 volunteers who worked 12-hour shifts, helped things go smoothly.But not everything went according to plan. On the first night of evacuations, the Red Cross ran out of hotel rooms, especially for people who had pets. Some evacuees without RVs had to sleep in their cars.Mahoney says the busy Labor Day Weekend, combined with hotel capacity restrictions because of the coronavirus, leads to fewer available rooms.To make sure it doesn't happen again, Mahoney says the Red Cross is already working on backup plans to open limited group shelters, with social distancing put in place to keep people apart. He told 10News they've already scouted hundreds of locations around San Diego.Meanwhile, the San Diego Humane Society also put in new protocols for safety during the pandemic. They helped hundreds of animals during the Valley Fire, and say the most significant challenges were limiting contact with owners and making sure their field teams followed the rules about distancing and wearing masks."The more people you interact with, the more likely you are to come in contact with somebody who is transmitting coronavirus," says Lt. John Peaveler. "So, we've had our biggest safety precautions on that side."Both groups say they'll take all the Valley Fire experience and put it to use in the next disaster. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As Americans wait for a regulatory decision on Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine candidate, local dry ice companies are counting on the cold chain distribution to help boost sales that have significantly dried up during the pandemic.San Diego Ice Company in the Midway District said it is already fielding calls from hospitals and clinics looking to order dry ice. The family-owned business has distributed ice products for decades, but vice president Anthony Toma said the company has secured the equipment needed to begin manufacturing dry ice from liquid carbon dioxide in December.“Without this dry ice, there's no vaccine,” Toma said.Dry ice is carbon dioxide in its solid form. It’s critical to shipping and storing Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine candidate.While Moderna’s vaccine can be stored in a standard freezer, Pfizer’s candidate needs to be kept at 94 degrees Fahrenheit below zero. That’s colder than winter in Antarctica.The company says once it gets the green light from the FDA, it will pack vials in boxes with dry ice. Each shipper box can hold up to 5,000 doses and will be fitted with sensors to constantly track location and temperature.Pfizer will ship the boxes from sites in Kalamazoo, MI and Pleasant Prairie, WI via FedEx and UPS, sending them to hospitals, clinics and pharmacies across the country.From there, vaccination providers must store the doses in a way that preserves their efficacy. Long-term storage of up to six months requires an ultra low-temperature freezer, but outside of hospitals those units are rare.The cold chain required for Pfizer’s candidate is “the most challenging issue” facing distribution, Governor Gavin Newsom said Monday.Newsom said the state plans to assist Pfizer’s efforts by purchasing 16 ultra low-temperature freezers, along with 61 smaller freezers that will be positioned in high-need areas.Another storage option is to keep doses in Pfizer’s thermal shipper box. Vials can last in the box for up to 15 days be refilling the dry ice, and Toma expects some of his dry ice will be part of that process.“We're gonna play a big part,” he said. “We're ready for that and we're honored to do it.”Toma is hoping dry ice will help thaw sales that have plummeted because of the pandemic. A lot of the ice business relies on big events and conventions that have been shut down. Restaurants have reduced volume. Airlines have cut back on food service.“There are a couple of [ice] companies that I spoke with and they said, ‘If it wasn't for dry ice, we wouldn't know what to do,’” he said. “Dry ice is keeping most of us alive.”Toma knows the implications aren’t just financial. Both he and his wife caught the virus and recovered, so they know just how important these vaccines are.Starting in December, San Diego Ice Company will start producing about 1800 pounds of dry ice an hour, he said. That’s enough to fill 36 of Pfizer’s shipper boxes, which require 50 pounds of dry ice each.The FDA has scheduled a meeting of its vaccine advisory committee on December 10. The agency is expected to announce a decision on whether to approve an emergency use authorization shortly thereafter. 3161

"The systems are designed to try to show you stuff that they think is going to actually make you excited or make you react in some way. They're also imposing stricter punishments for Tweets calling for election interference or violence.Twitter also made changes to the way people interact with links posted on their platform.They've added warnings to misleading tweets and direct people to more credible information if they engage with a misleading post.They also now ask people to click on a link before Retweeting it and encourage "Quote Tweeting," where people can comment on what they're sharing instead of just reposting the original Tweet.Twitter also changed the format of its Trending section, adding context to topics and hashtags.Facebook, meanwhile, put a lot of effort into helping people vote. Their Voter Information Center helped 4.4 million people register to vote in 2020.They also banned all ads related to the election, politics, or other social issues during the entire month leading up to the election.To help keep misinformation from spreading, Facebook says they removed 120,000 posts from March through September for violating their Voter Interference Policies. They also issued 150 million warnings for content that was flagged as misleading by independent fact-checkers.Campbell says both platforms are a lot more reliable now than they were in 2016, but could still have done more. He believes it's because they didn't want to face criticism over censorship."From a pragmatic perspective, they probably don't want to get involved in the challenges of trying to go through and censor or decide what kind of stuff they want to have on the site," says Campbell.Even with all the changes, he says users still need to scroll with skepticism and filter the content they chose to engage with."I think it's very important that we're all vigilant," he says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- California’s state electric operator issued a flex alert over the weekend as temperatures climb.According to the California Independent System Operator, the flex alert goes into effect Saturday, September 5, and lasts through Monday, September 7.The operator asked customers statewide to conserve energy from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. At 6:30 p.m., CAISO declared a Stage 2 emergency and warned of possible rotating power outages.The guidance comes as an excessive heat warning was issued for large swaths of San Diego County over the weekend.RELATED STORIESCheck today's weather forecast in your areaSan Diego County opens cool zones amid heat waveAs of Saturday morning, the National Weather Service said temperatures throughout the county could reach as high as 122, with coastal temperatures in some areas reaching 99 degrees.Meanwhile, a red flag warning was issued for San Diego County’s inland valleys and mountains from 10 a.m. Saturday through 6 p.m. Sunday.The agency says winds will top out around 15 to 20 miles per hour with gusts as high as 25 to 35 miles per hour. 1098

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- COVID-19 outreach in the Latino community is getting a boost after San Diego County partnered with promotoras to help with contact tracing. Promotoras, which literally means promoters, are bilingual community health workers. The goal is to lower the high number of COVID-19 cases among Latinos in the county. Latinos and Hispanics make up almost 63% of COVID-19 cases in the county, but Latinos make up only 34% of the population.The promotoras are members of the communities where they will be working. The county announced the partnership at the beginning of August and now the promotoras are out in the community helping with contact tracing. The promotoras will work in underserved communities and Latino neighborhoods. ABC 10News spoke to two promotoras working with South Bay Community Services. They are getting ready to start on September 1st. In total, 17 promotoras with the organization will start on that day. They've all received hours of training and are certified contact tracers. The promotoras will have the task of reaching out to the close contacts of positive COVID-19 cases. The contact is made over the phone or via email and text and the promotoras will ask things about testing and if they're presenting any symptoms. The county's partnership also includes promotoras from San Diego State and will include promotoras that speak other languages like Tagalog and Arabic. 1421
