Russian President Vladimir Putin said he "couldn't care less" if Russian citizens tried to meddle in the 2016 US election because, he claimed, the perpetrators weren't linked to the Kremlin.During a no-holds-barred interview with NBC News' Megyn Kelly, Putin repeatedly denied ordering a multifaceted influence campaign to sabotage the presidential election."Why have you decided the Russian authorities, myself included, gave anybody permission to do this?" Putin asked.  485

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California's job growth is now in its 113th month, tying the expansion of the 1960s as the longest on record as the world's fifth largest economy continues its recovery from the Great Recession, officials announced Friday. The country's most populous state needs between 8,000 and 9,000 new jobs each month to keep up with its growing workforce. But for the past nine years, California has averaged 29,200 new jobs each month, according numbers released Friday by the state Employment Development Department. The more than 3.2 million jobs California has added since 2010 account for more than 15% of the country's job gains over that time. Friday, the state's unemployment rate dipped to 4.1% for July, tying a record low first set in 2018."In every way the American economy is substantially impacted by how California is doing," Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom said Friday at an unrelated news conference. "We continue to be optimistic, but not naive."The United States' trade war with China could put California's job gains in peril, according to Michael Bernick, a former director of the California Employment Development Department who is now special counsel with the Philadelphia-based law firm Duane Morris.Analysts have been warning for a year that tariffs on Chinese imports could threaten U.S. job growth. So far, that hasn't happened, but the Trump administration recently intensified the conflict by imposing 10% tariffs on 0 billion in Chinese imports, raising fears China would respond with tariffs on U.S. exports.Earlier this month, federal trade officials announced they would delay tariffs on about 60% of those imports until December."There is no reason we can't expect continued strong employment throughout 2019 in the absence of some external event. And the tariffs are that potential event," Bernick said.California's booming economy was felt earlier this year when Newsom signed a state spending plan that included an estimated .5 billion surplus, the largest in at least 20 years. But Newsom and others have been cautious about spending it, warning the country is due for a recession given the unusual length of the recovery."It is what keeps me up at night," California Treasurer Fiona Ma said Thursday about a possible recession. "Our president moves the market every day through his Twitters, and that is very unnerving for us."California's unemployment rate was lowest in the San Francisco Bay Area, where the country's tech industry is headquartered. Bernick said while Silicon Valley itself does not account for many jobs in the state, the money it produces has fueled a surge in accompanying industries including finance, real estate and retail. The unemployment rate was highest in the Central Valley, reflecting the seasonal demands of the state's billion agriculture industry. Imperial County in Southern California had an unemployment rate of more than 20% as surveys reported more than 14,000 people were out of work. 2992

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California wildlife officials say residents cannot keep an invasive beagle-sized rodent as a pet.The Sacramento Bee reports that the California Fish and Game Commission are taking preventive action to avoid the South American nutria from spreading. The commission says they will discuss adding nutria to a legal list of prohibited pets in December.Officials say California could see about 250,000 rodents in five years.Scientists say they captured hundreds in multiple counties already as part of a million plan to eradicate the rodent.Experts say their burrowing is damaging to waterways and flood protection infrastructure.Nutrias have also been reported in Oregon, Louisiana and Maryland. 727

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A former Democratic California lawmaker was fined 0,000 Thursday after an audit found he spent political contributions on a vacation in Asia, personal plane tickets and remodeling his vacation home in Hawaii. The Mercury News of San Jose reports that the Fair Political Practices Commission found Joe Canciamilla violated campaign finance laws at least 30 times, used 0,529 in campaign funds from 2011 to 2015, and falsified state filings to cover it up.Canciamilla, 64, resigned as Contra Costa elections chief last month. He was the youngest public official in state history when he was elected at age 17 to the Pittsburg school board. He later served on the Pittsburg City Council and Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors before winning three terms in the state Assembly as Democrat in 2000.He opened a campaign account for a county judge seat in 2011 but ultimately did not run. He was appointed clerk-recorder in 2013 and won election to the office twice. An investigation by the commission’s enforcement staff found that Canciamilla repeatedly mixed campaign contributions with his personal funds starting in 2011. He spent ,000 from campaign funds on a vacation to Asia and bought plane tickets for a trip to London and Washington, D.C. for him and his spouse and used campaign money to pay off credit card charges incurred from remodeling his house in Hawaii. The commission’s enforcement staff recommended a maximum fine of ,000 per count, or a total of 0,000 for 30 counts. Canciamilla agreed to the settlement earlier this month, which the commission formally approved Thursday.Canciamilla’s lawyer Andy Rockas said in a statement that Canciamilla has paid back the disputed amounts and the fine, takes full responsibility for his actions and hopes the fines won’t severely overshadow his 46 years of public service. The commission has also referred the matter to the county district attorney’s office, which is conducting a review and could bring criminal charges. 2024

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A judge has ordered rapper Kanye West's name to be removed from presidential ballots in Virginia. Richmond Circuit Court Judge Joi Taylor issued an order Thursday saying West was disqualified because he had failed to meet the requirement that 13 people in the state pledge support for his campaign. The West campaign submitted 13 such "Elector Oaths," but the judge declared 11 of them invalid. The judge added that some were obtained "by improper, fraudulent and/or misleading means." 514
