An Iowa grandmother won half the 7 million Powerball prize and she didn't even know it at first.Lerynne West, 51, bought her tickets at Casey's General Store in the small town of Redfield, Iowa, while grabbing pizza and coffee with her sister. She said it was a special day because she had bought her first home and was moving in that day.West thought she put the lottery ticket in her purse, but she accidentally left it on the floor of her sister's truck. It lay there for a couple days. When a friend texted the day after the drawing to ask if she had won, West said she hadn't had a chance to check. She rifled through her purse and realized she didn't have the ticket. She quickly called her sister, who found it.West looked at the photo of the ticket her sister sent her and checked the numbers on the lottery's website -- she had won!"I told my sister to get in her truck and get that ticket and get up here right now! And, drive slow," West said in an Iowa Lottery press release.West's ticket and a ticket purchased in New York split the 7 million Powerball jackpot in the October 27 drawing. The holder of the New York ticket has not come forward, according to the Iowa Lottery.West opted to take home 8.1 million in a lump sum, minus what's taken out in taxes. Her other option was a 3.9 million annuity that would be disbursed over 29 years. She is the winner of the largest lottery prize to date in Iowa. 1435

And then there were three. The Atlantic Coast Conference, Big 12 and Southeastern Conference were still moving forward with plans for a fall college football season. Two other Power Five leagues, the Big Ten and the Pac-12, have called things off. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey says he is comfortable with the 14-member conference’s approach. The ACC says it will continue to follow advice of medical advisers and health officials. The Big 12 Board of Directors met late Tuesday. According to ESPN sources, the league's administrators are still committed to having a fall season. The league previously announced it would move forward with nine conference games and one nonconference contest for each of its teams. In addition to the Pac-12 and Big Ten, the Mid-American and Mountain West Conferences previously announced they were postponing the start of the 2020 football season. The MAC and MWC are two of five leagues that comprise the "Group of Five," which are the lower tier conferences that are part of the Football Bowl Subdivision. 1049

As a jazz musician who’s traveled the world with some of the best-known artists in the industry, your first assumption might be that Daryl Davis’ claim to fame is from being on stage. But the African American racial justice activist is better known for the work he’s done over the years helping Ku Klux Klan members leave behind a life of racism and white supremacy. It started back in the early 1990s when Davis arranged a meeting with a former wizard of the KKK. At the time, he did not know Davis was Black.Over the years, the two forged an unlikely relationship with one another. Davis would regularly be invited to Klan rallies across the country. He didn’t agree with their message, but he wasn’t there to join the Klan, he was there to help persuade members’ opinions on race.“You have ignorance and if you don’t cure that ignorance, that turns into fear because we fear things we don’t understand and if you don’t turn that fear, it escalates to hatred, because we hate the things that frighten us,” the 64-year-old explained.Having spent decades with members of the KKK, Davis doesn’t argue or even get frustrated with those he meets. Instead, Davis tries to plant a seed that he nurtures and helps grow over time. That seed, he says, is breaking down barriers that exist between KKK members and African Americans. As Davis spends time getting to known Klan members, he says that over time, many start to see him for more than the color of his skin, they see him as human.“If you have cancer in the bone, you can’t rub topical cream on top, you have to drill to the bone and put chemo or radiation to the source. And that’s what we have to do with racism. Go to the source, which is ignorance. It’s not inherited, it’s a learned behavior,” he said.To date, Davis has helped more than 200 Klan members leave the white supremacist group. Many send Davis their robes after they abandon the KKK. But Davis is quick to note that he never convinces anyone to leave.“I didn’t convert anybody, but I am the impetus for over 200 people to convert themselves. I planted the seed so they could come to the conclusion that, ‘I might need to be rethinking what I’m thinking,’” he added. As for the current state of racial unrest gripping the country, Davis sees this as a moment of reckoning where real institutional change on racism is possible.“We have never had this many white people join in our cause. This is a major change. We are turning another page in the history of this country and we have not turned a page in a long time,” said Davis. 2549

An Akron, Ohio man will spend at least the next 20 years in prison for selling fentanyl to a woman who overdosed on the drug and died nearly three years ago.Jurmaine A. Jeffries, 29, was convicted of distribution of fentanyl and possession with intent to distribute the drug.A jury found that the fentanyl Jeffries sold the woman resulted in her death. On Sept. 16, 2015, the day of her death, the woman texted and called Jeffries to ask about buying heroin. He responded to her messages and told her "B right there."Cell phone records placed Jeffries in the area near the woman's house on the day she died, authorities said.According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, after the woman died, police used her phone to text Jeffries about buying more drugs. Police arrested him when he showed up at the woman's house with fentanyl on his person.Sentencing will take place at a later date, but Jeffries is facing a mandatory minimum of two decades in prison for his charges.“We will prosecute those who sell fentanyl and other drugs that kill our friends and neighbors,” U.S. Attorney Justin E. Herdman said. “This defendant drove around Akron delivering poison for profit. The Akron Police Department and all our law enforcement partners did a tremendous job bringing this man to justice.” 1315
