GENEVA, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo held separate talks here Tuesday with parliamentary leaders from South Africa, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and Kazakhstan and the chief of the World Health Organization (WHO).During talks with Hon Max Vuyisile Sisulu, speaker of South Africa's National Assembly, Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) of China, said that the peoples of China and South Africa share a deep, traditional friendship.Wu said the two countries have seen their ties develop in a rapid and all-round way since the establishment of diplomatic relations.The two nations have carried out frequent high-level exchanges, with their mutual political trust gradually building up, Wu said.Wu Bangguo (L), chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), meets with Max Sisulu, speaker of the National Assembly of South Africa, in Geneva, Switzerland, July 20, 2010.Wu added that the two countries have also shared understanding and support on issues concerning each other's core interests and maintained close coordination and cooperation on significant international affairs.Noting that economic and trade cooperation continues to expand and that people-to-people exchanges are also gaining momentum, Wu stressed that all those efforts have brought visible and practical benefits to the two countries and their people.China attaches great importance to promoting its relationship with South Africa, and at a time when the international situation is undergoing deep and complex changes, relations between the two big developing countries have transcended the bilateral category and gained increasing global and strategic significance, Wu said.Expressing hope that the two sides can join hands in enhancing their strategic partnership, Wu emphasized that the NPC is ready to consolidate friendly cooperation with South Africa's National Assembly and deepen their coordination and cooperation in international and regional parliamentary organizations.The two legislatures should also work together with their counterparts in other developing countries to call for more attention on development and express their resolve to realize the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), Wu said.For his part, Sisulu said that China is an very important nation on the international stage and an important cooperation partner of South Africa.South Africa's government, parliament and political parties are committed to promoting ties with China, and are hoping for more friendly exchanges and cooperation with China in more areas, he stressed.Sisulu said that a closer relationship with China will benefit South Africa's economic development and enable his country to better cooperate with China in handling global challenges and defending the interests of developing countries.

CHANGSHA, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has warned that China's macro economic control policy is facing mounting difficulties with the severity of the international financial crisis and the unpredictable nature of the global economic recovery."China's current economy remains good, but the domestic and international environment is extremely complicated," Wen said while addressing a symposium held Saturday in Changsha, capital of central China's Hunan Province.The symposium, which was presided over by Premier Wen, was thrown to feature economic situation in three provinces of Hubei, Hunan and Guangdong.At the symposium, Wen reiterated the government's stance in maintaining the continuity and stability of macro economic policies, and making these macro policies more flexible and targeted.Wen said the government would "work to promote stable and relatively fast domestic economic growth, restructure the economy and manage inflation expectations to ensure the government's goals for 2010 are met."The government would endeavor to resolve long-term structural problems while targeting urgent issues, Wen said.Before the symposium, Wen also inspected flood prevention and control efforts in parts of Hunan Thursday, and moved on to Changsha, the provincial capital, to visit a number of other venues including companies ranging from machinery, outsourcing to animation companies Friday.While inspecting the companies, Wen enquired about their business, employment and social security, and encouraged them to step up innovation."An internationally competitive enterprise needs products of the best quality, world-leading patent technologies and generations of excellent staff," Wen said when talking with employees in Sany Group, a Changsha-based leading Chinese engineering machinery manufacturer.Wen talked with employers and job hunters at a job market in Changsha. He told a female university student named Yan Youping that the priority for university students was to study hard and grasp skills at school, and students should be clear about personnel demands and be prepared.

  

BEIJING, July 13 (Xinhua) -- China Tuesday pledged to continue to promote the development of military relations with Singapore.Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie made the remarks when meeting with Chiang Chie Foo, visiting Permanent Secretary of the Singaporean Defense Ministry.Recent years had witnessed a rapid development of China-Singapore relations, with political mutual trust, a reciprocal and mutually beneficial economic relationship and fruitful cooperation, Liang said.Bilateral military ties had undergone a healthy development, with sound exchanges and cooperation mechanisms, frequent high-level visits and good cooperation in personnel training, joint military training and escort missions, Liang said.China was willing to work with Singapore to continuously boost relations between the two countries and armed forces, so as to play an active role in jointly safeguarding regional security and stability, he said.Chiang said Singapore attached great importance to the development of its relations with China.The two armed forces were expected to maintain exchanges and cooperation and to strengthen understanding and mutual trust, he said.Ma Xiaotian, deputy chief of general staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, and Chiang co-chaired the third China-Singapore defense policy dialogue before the meeting.Both sides exchanged views in-depth on regional security, relations of the two countries and armed forces as well as other issues of common concern and reached consensus on further strengthening military ties.They agreed to continue to enhance China-Singapore military cooperation and promote the development of friendly and cooperative military relations.The two nations held the first defense policy dialogue in January 2008 in China and the second in March 2009 in Singapore.

  

DUNHUA, Jilin, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- When a flash flood struck their village ten days ago, 55-year-old Fu Bailin and his relatives had no time to take any belongings as they fled, except for a bill of debt."All our belongings have been swept away. My 100-square-meter house was flattened. My 2.5-hectares of cropland was destroyed," said Fu, a soybean and corn farmer at the Yaodianzi Village in Dunhua City, Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture in northeast China's Jilin Province.All the houses of the 286 families in the village were destroyed. Fu's family, including Fu, his 70-year-old father, his wife and son, along with their fellow villagers, now live in temporary tents in the local forest police headquarters in Dunhua. The forest police also provide meals for them.Floods have left 85 people dead and 66 missing in Jilin over the past two months, local authorities said Saturday.More than 5 million people have been affected since the flood season began in June and some 1.5 million people have been evacuated, the Jilin Provincial Civil Affairs Department said in a statement.Additionally, almost 82,000 houses have collapsed and 198,000 others have been damaged, the statement said.Economic losses were estimated at 45 billion yuan (6.6 billion U.S.dollars), it added.In the hardest-hit areas, flash floods have cut roads, isolated villages and disrupted communications and water supplies.Compounding the problems, more downpours were forecast to hit the province in the coming two days.
