Kaylie Kempsell takes photos of babies for a living. “They’re really my passion. Newborns are what drives me,” Kempsell said.As a former NICU nurse, Kaylie knows the best practices when handling a newborn. She’s a pro in more ways than one. However, with more amateur photographers taking on newborn photography, Kempsell says everyone involved needs to be aware of the potential risks a baby can face.“There are a lot of things that go into newborn photography that the average person may not realize,” Kempsell said.According to NICU Neonatologist Dr. Susan Hwang with Children’s Hospital Colorado, it’s important to make sure the infant is breathing comfortably.“They are at risk of blocking off their airway if they happen to drop their heads and/or if there’s something placed in front of their nose or mouth from which they’re unable to shift their head position to allow them to get enough air during that photo session,” Dr. Hwang said. You’ll also want to make sure the baby’s body temperature is well regulated. If the baby is wrapped in too many blankets, it could get too warm.“Similarly, a baby shouldn’t be too cold, so if the air conditioning is ramped up during your photo session, the baby should have an additional layer.”And then of course, if the baby is on a surface above the ground, he or she should be watched at all times. Especially since babies can easily startle.“Often times in newborn photography, you notice that babies are on baskets or tables or are surrounded by other objects. You have to make sure the baby is secure and is not going to roll off,” Dr. Hwang said.Kempsell says she also makes sure there aren’t any tripping hazards, and if she’s using a prop, she thinks through potential hazards like splinters or lead paint. What many may not realize is that a lot of the unique poses newborn photographers achieve are done with photoshop.“During one photo we have an assistant holding the baby above their head like this on the top, and during another photo we have somebody holding the baby underneath their chin, usually by their wrists,” Kempsell said.In addition to her experience in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Kempsell has a certification for newborn photography safety. However, no overarching organization requires it.“So anybody can pick up a camera and start taking newborn photos and start charging for them,” Kempsell said. That’s why it’s good to look for photographers who have gone through some training.Stephanie Robin is the co-creator of APNPI. The organization started offering training courses for newborn photographers in 2017. “Our initiative is to educate photographers primarily in safely handling newborns,” Robin said. The safety course covers newborn physiology, newborn reflexes, safe environments for studio setting and how to handle birth injuries or pre-existing diagnoses. She thought to create the educational tool after noticing as a newborn photographer herself that babies could be placed in dangerous scenarios.“They’re human beings, and they’re actually in their most vulnerable state,” Robin said.To become an active member of the organization, you have to pass the course and the exam that follows. However, Robin notes it’s really only the complex poses to be concerned about. She says if any parent is especially worried, their best bet is to place the newborn in positions they would do naturally in everyday life. When it comes down to it, the parent is the best advocate for their baby.“You’re in charge of your baby, you’re in charge of your baby’s safety, and it’s ok to speak up and say, ‘I’m not comfortable with that, can we do something else,’” Kempsell said.********************************************************************************************** If you’d like to reach out to the journalist for this story, please email 3831

J.D. Salinger thought of including his generation’s idea of a trigger alert as he worked on “The Catcher in the Rye.”In an early draft of the 1951 novel, narrator Holden Caulfield warns that the story will include “quite a bit of swearing and sex stuff.” But Salinger himself drew a large “X’ over the passage and wrote “delete” in the margins.”The manuscript is part of a Salinger exhibit which opens Friday and continues through Jan. 19 at the New York Public Library’s historic 5th Avenue branch in Manhattan. The display also includes family photographs, letters and other rarities from the famously private author, who died in 2010.The exhibit, titled “JD Salinger,” draws from archives made available by Salinger’s family and helps mark the centennial of his birth. 782

It's been more than five years since Jim Stauffer's mother died in hospice care in Arizona. Seventy-three-year-old Doris Stauffer suffered from Alzheimer's disease during the last years of her life, but doctors says she didn't have the gene for it. Doctors worried the disease may have mutated, and hoped to study her brain after her passing to find out more. When the time came though, her neurologist couldn't accept the body. Her son hoped reaching out to other donation facilities could lead to the same result."I feel foolish," said Jim Stauffer. "Because I’m not a trusting person, but in this situation you have no idea this is going on -- you trust. I think that trust is what they fed on.”Biological Resource Center came to pick up his mother's body within 45 minutes of her death. “There was paperwork signed stating what was and what was not to happen with her body," added Stauffer. Days later, he received a wooden box with his mother's information and an ID number. Inside, he was told, was a majority of her ashes. Years went by before Stauffer learned what he was told, wasn't the case. Stauffer says a reporter from Reuters contacted him with documents showing a paper trail of where his mom's body really went. 1241

It's lights out for tiny toiletries.Marriott International said it will eliminate small plastic bottles of shampoo, conditioner and bath gel from its hotels worldwide by December 2020. They'll be replaced with larger bottles or wall-mounted dispensers, depending on the hotel. The move follows a similar announcement last month by IHG, which owns Holiday Inn, Kimpton and other brands. IHG said it will eliminate approximately 200 million tiny bottles each year by 2021. Last year, Walt Disney Co. announced it would replace small plastic shampoo bottles at its resorts and on its cruise ships. Many smaller companies, like the five Soneva Resorts in Thailand and the Maldives, have also ditched plastic bottles. But Marriott's move is the largest so far. The company says it will eliminate approximately 500 million small plastic bottles each year, or about 1.7 million pounds of plastic. Marriott, the world's largest hotel chain, has more than 7,000 hotels in 131 countries. Its 30 brands range from SpringHill Suites and Residence Inn to Sheraton and Ritz-Carlton.Marriott started replacing small bottles early last year at some North American brands, including Courtyard and Fairfield hotels. About 1,000 of those now feature larger bottles or pump dispensers that are hooked to the shower wall.Denise Naguib, Marriott's vice president of sustainability and supplier diversity, said Marriott got a positive response from guest surveys. Many were relieved because the larger bottles let them use as much or as little shampoo as they want.Naguib said most Marriott hotels will eliminate small bottles by July 1, 2020. Luxury brands will get them by the end of 2020. Lower-priced brands will have dispensers or bottles that are tethered to the shower wall. Luxury brands will have untethered bottles. The bottles hold the equivalent of 10 to 12 small bottles. All are tamper resistant. The larger bottles will still be plastic, and Marriott still plans to replace them _ not just refill them _ when they run low. But Naguib said the larger bottles are easier to recycle than smaller ones.Soon, hotels may not have a choice. Lawmakers in California are considering banning hotels from using small shampoo bottles in 2023, while the European Union is banning a wide range of single-use plastic items, like cutlery and plates, by 2021. 2343
