SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It’s a win-win situation: a sale on airfares out of San Diego, with an ultimate destination of Hawaii. Southwest Airlines opened its flight schedule Wednesday for once-daily service out of San Diego. The flights travel to Kahului, Maui, starting Apr. 14, 2020. Flights to Honolulu begin Apr. 20, 2020, Southwest reports. Fares as low as 9 each way will be available on both routes for travel between Apr. 14 and June 4, 2020, according to the airline. The tickets must be purchased Oct. 30. "We're grateful for the steadfast loyalty of our San Diego Customers and we're adding a Southwest heading to their compass of nonstop options," said Andrew Watterson, Executive Vice President & Chief Revenue Officer for Southwest Airlines. Southwest will also offer six flights of inter-island service between the two Hawaiian airports. 861

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In an effort to accelerate hiring and training of more border officer, National Guard members were deployed Tuesday to ports of entry along San Diego County's border with Mexico. In total, 24 National Guard troops joined Customs and Border Protection personnel at Port of San Diego, and ports of entry in San Ysidro, Otay Mesa, Tecate, and Calexico. They will not be taking part in any enforcement activities, according to CBP, instead, helping in surveillance support and operations. The deployed troops will not be armed.RELATED: Border Patrol officials discuss National Guard deployment to US-Mexico borderUp to 106 additional National Guard troops may be sent to the ports of entry in the coming weeks, CBP added."The contribution of the National Guard will undoubtedly improve our effectiveness at the ports of entry by enabling those officers to focus on enforcement activities," Pete Flores, CBP Director of field operations for San Diego, said. "We look forward to working collaboratively to further our national security mission."CBP says the additional troops will allow border personnel to focus on securing areas of the border against drug, weapons, and human smuggling. 1247

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Lego fans will have more to look forward to in 2019, as Legoland California plans new attractions in celebration of its 20th birthday.Among one of the park's 2019 offerings: Free admission for kids 12 and under on their birthday, starting in January."Having a chance to reflect on the last 20 years ahead of next year’s birthday celebration, it’s incredible to think about all we’ve accomplished during that time and the amount of kids we positively impacted through their experiences at the Resort," said park General Manager Peter Ronchetti.RELATED: Southern California theme parks ring in the holiday seasonAmong the new additions for 2019, Legoland said it plans to add new attractions and live shows for visitors to experience. One new addition will be a new attraction inspired by "The Lego Movie." The park will host special "Lego Movie" festivities from Feb. 16 - 17 and 23 - 24 around the park ahead of the attraction's opening. The park's resort is also getting a special zone geared toward toddlers modeled after Duplo. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Light scattered showers fell throughout the day from Mission Valley to Carmel Valley. While Sunday's rainfall marked the first fall rain for the region, Alex Tardy with the National Weather Service said that rain will disappear by Monday. “We're looking at conditions that are bone dry, record dry. It’s never been this dry before and just a little bit of rain like this, while it's nice and we won’t have any fires [Sunday], once the dry air starts blowing through on Monday and continues into Tuesday, it's not going to make much of a difference,” Tardy said.RELATED: In-depth: Why La Ni?a could make wildfire season worseTardy said that San Diego may go long stretches without rainfall this season as we move into a dry La Ni?a winter. However, when the rain eventually comes, it could come in sporadic heavy storms. Tardy also added that the conditions will have fire crews on high alert for weeks. “It also means a delay in the start of our winter so we could be in for a very long fall period where we mostly see dry conditions,” Tardy says. “What that means for us is that fire danger [could be] continuing into the fall and well into the early winter.” 1186

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - If the flood of fellow travelers doesn't keep you close to home this Memorial Day weekend, perhaps the price at the pump will.Gasoline prices have climbed 12 cents over the past two weeks to bring the national average to about .93 per gallon before the Memorial Day weekend. It's the highest since Memorial Day 2014 when the average hit .65 a gallon, according to AAA.In California — one of 14 states above a gallon — drivers will have it the worst in the U.S. with an average of .71 a gallon.GAS PRICE MAP: Find the cheapest gasoline near you and around San DiegoSan Diego's local prices mimic the state's trend. A year ago the average for a gallon of gas in the county was about .03, compared to about .73 a gallon today. For the week ending on May 11, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported gas stocks fell by about 200,000 barrels to 29.7 million barrels. However, inventory levels are 600,000 stronger than this time last year. Imports increased by 50,000 barrels to 117,000 barrels last week, EIA reports.RELATED: Memorial Day weekend to see the most travelers in last 12 yearsDespite this, gas prices don't look like they'll put a dent in weekend travel. This year, AAA expects more than 41.5 million travelers to be out for Memorial Day weekend, a five percent jump from last year. Of that, about 36.6 million people will be on the roads. And drivers may need to fill up more often on top of that. Transportation analytics company INRIX predicts travel delays could be up to three times longer than normal in some areas of the country.BEFORE YOU HEAD OUT: Check updated San Diego traffic conditionsAnd as the summer rolls in, gasoline prices may not look back."Compared to an average of the last three Memorial Day weekends, pump prices are nearly 50 cents more expensive and climbing," Jeanette Casselano, an AAA spokesperson, said. "Trends are indicating that this summer is likely to bring the national average to at least /gallon." 2040
