SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A grieving son is speaking out after COVID-19 claimed its first local VA employee.John Martinez started feeling symptoms in early June. First, it was fatigue. Then came a fever and breathing troubles. His son Josh bought him a device to measure his oxygen levels. In mid-June, Josh's heart dropped when he read the device."His oxygen levels were below 80 and then dropped to 70. We got in our truck, took him straight to the hospital," said Martinez.John, an Army and Navy veteran, was taken to the VA Medical Center in La Jolla where he worked. For more than 15 years, he's maintained biomedical equipment like ventilators.When the pandemic started, he wanted to keep working."It was one of those things. The country needs him, so let's step up," said Martinez.A day after John was admitted, he found himself on one of the ventilators he knew so well. Soon after, his kidneys started to fail. His condition deteriorated quickly. More than a week ago, doctors allowed Martinez to visit."Just told him to fight, to keep fighting. I was crying. Just put my hand to the glass, trying to scream through the glass," said Martinez.Less than 2 days later, his father would pass away. John was set to retire after his birthday in late July, at the age of 63. Martinez isn't sure where his father contracted COVID-19 but other family members believe he got it while working."He wanted that benchmark of 63 to retire. He worked for so long and was looking forward to relaxation," said Martinez.Josh says he can only shake his head at the ongoing mask debate, and those who refuse to wear one."It's all good. Just put on your mask. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A compromise in San Diego’s short-term rental debate may help the city get answers.In a news conference, San Diego City Councilmember Jennifer Campbell announced a compromise between “United Here,” which represents more than 6,000 local hotel, gaming, and hospitality workers, and Expedia Group, which is the parent company for short-term rental brands.Both sides have agreed on rules that Campbell said could help regulate the short-term rental industry -- by providing a balance between the hospitality industry and preserving the right of homeowners to use their property to help make ends meet.Under this agreement, it would cap the number of short-term rental permits that were granted and also establish a 2-night minimum stay.In turn, residents will be allowed to home share and those who rent out their homes part time -- usually during big events like Comic-Con, Pride, or December Nights -- wouldn’t have to pay the full permit costs.There will also be strict enforcement of the Good Neighbor Policy, which would include fines for those who violate it and possibly having permits revoked for repeat violations.This plan will be sent to the full council for further review. 1210

In July, they created Light the Way Project and have been helping peers across San Diego, the U.S., and the world with virtual peer-to-peer webinars followed by Q & A sessions."When we talk about our experiences people younger than us they feel better and reassured about the future," said one of the group's administrators. "People appreciate we're doing this especially in a pandemic." The group covers relevant topics like competitive culture, dealing with stress and anxiety, and managing your time when learning from home. "We talked about different strategies such as sleep schedules, managing priorities, divide and conquer strategies, and how to take productive breaks."They promote their events through social media, word of mouth, and forums like NextDoor. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A European carrier is hoping to transform the way Southern California travels between major cities.FlixBus will start offering service to 10 Southern California cities, including in San Diego, beginning May 31. The service, which has operated within Europe since 2013, is hoping to carve out a presence with discounted ticket prices and some high-tech additions.For a limited time, travelers can snag fares from Los Angeles to Las Vegas for as low as on select dates throughout June, according to the service's website. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The unemployment rate in the San Diego-Carlsbad Metropolitan Statistical Area dropped to 6.6% in November, down from 7.5% in October and above the year-ago estimate of 2.9%, according to figures released Friday by the state Employment Development Department.This compares with an unadjusted unemployment rate of 7.9% for California, down from 9% in October. The rate is 6.4% for the nation, down from 6.6% during the same period.According to the EDD, total non-farm employment in San Diego County increased by 14,300 jobs month-over-month -- from 1,412,000 to 1,426,300 -- while farm employment contracted from 9,500 to 9,200.The region lost 97,700 non-farm jobs and 400 agricultural jobs over the year.The region's unemployment rate rose to 15% in May during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to EDD data, while data from the San Diego Association of Governments showed rates of nearly 30% unemployment in May.The November data reported Friday does not include regional stay-at-home orders which Gov. Gavin Newsom put in place for California regions this month with fewer than 15% of their intensive care unit beds available. Thursday's data from the state claimed Southern California had filled its ICU beds as the COVID-19 pandemic worsens, but San Diego County health officials reported 16% of local beds were still available.Trade, transportation and utilities led all industry sectors in month- over-month job gains at 8,200. Retail trade, up 6,500, and transportation, warehousing and utilities, up 1,800, logged increases in jobs.
