BEIJING, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Tropical storm "Dianmu" along with gusty winds will strengthen precipitation in north China as it moves north, the national meteorological agency warned on Monday.The typhoon, started Sunday night in the sea about 400 kilometers east of Taiwan, is expected to complicate flood-control efforts in northeast China, where torrential rain-triggered floods have left more than 100 people dead and missing.Heavy rains will hit parts of northeast China's Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces on Tuesday. Northwest China's Gansu and Shaanxi provinces will also be affected, said the National Meteorological Center.The typhoon, the fourth this year, was moving northeast at a speed of 25 km per hour. Its center was located about 390 km east of Zhejiang Province's coast Monday afternoon and will approach southern coast of the Korean Peninsula on Tuesday, said the center.

ZHENGZHOU, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Three city mayors were suspended from their positions Friday after three mine accidents killed 169 people in central China's Henan Province, said the provincial authorities Friday.Li Endong, mayor of Pingdingshan City, Li Junfeng, vice mayor of the city in charge of work safety, and Shen Qinghuai, vice mayor of Luoyang City in charge of work safety, were suspended Friday, pending investigations, said the provincial committee of the Communist Party of China in a statement.Pingdingshan has seen two deadly accidents since last year. At least 49 miners died after explosives detonated at Xingdong No. 2 Mine on June 21, 2010. Another deadly gas explosion killed 76 people in the Xinhua No.4 pit in Xinhua District on Sept. 8, 2009.Luoyang City was home to a gas blast that killed 44 people in a coal pit in Yichuan County on March 31, 2010.All three mines had been ordered to suspend production before the accidents but somehow operated secretly as a result of possible negligence by the safety watchdogs.

OTTAWA, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao met Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Thursday for talks on the development of China-Canada ties.The two leaders are also expected to exchange views on major global and regional issues of common concern, said Chinese diplomats.According to the schedule, Hu and Harper will attend a signing ceremony of cooperation documents following their talks.Hu flew into Ottawa on Wednesday for a state visit to Canada.This year marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Canada.

HARARE, June 15 (Xinhua) -- Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Secretary-General Sindiso Ngwenya on Tuesday urged China to enter into joint ventures with Africa's largest regional trading and economic grouping to capitalize on the customs union that was launched last year.The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa, boasting 19 member states and a population of more than 450 million, is endowed with vast natural and human resources that make it a fertile investment destination, Ngwenya said."With a combined population of 456 million and a combined Gross Domestic Product of 450 billion U.S. dollars, this region is very rich in natural resources, rich in human resources and land for agriculture."This region will therefore become the region of first choice for investment and has the potential to feed the whole world," Ngwenya told Xinhua in an interview.He said China should take COMESA as its preferred investment destination and increase trade with Africa's largest trading and economic grouping.Ngwenya has previously urged more Chinese investment in the manufacturing sector so that Africa can move up the value chain and increase the incomes of its people while ensuring that less wealth is exported abroad.Trade between COMESA countries and China has also been growing by between 50 percent and 100 percent depending on the country, but on average by more than 50 percent annually and by the end of 2008 China-Africa trade was approaching the 100 billion U.S. dollars, according to Ngwenya.Ngwenya said the COMESA Customs Union presented immense opportunities for the Asian giant to deepen and consolidate economic cooperation with member states, most of whom it had strong bilateral, economic and political ties with. HANGZHOU, June 18 (Xinhua) -- Three people are dead and two others still buried Friday after a rain-triggered landslide in east China's Zhejiang Province.The landslide hit Taolin Village of Chun'an County at 5:00 a.m. Friday as villagers were being evacuated from their homes. The area had been pounded by rain since Thursday afternoon, said Tong Xiaowei, deputy county head.Debris swamped two residential houses, burying six residents and two others assisting with the evacuation, Tong said.Three of the eight people were injured and were receiving treatment at hospital, Tong said.About 300 fire fighters, policemen, medical personnel and villagers had joined in the rescue work, he said.Provincial meteorological authorities forecast Thursday that heavy rain would persist for another week.
