It's Hispanic Heritage Month.Sites like Yelp and Nextdoor are encouraging people to support Hispanic-owned businesses in their communities.This week, Yelp launched a tag that allows businesses to mark themselves as Latinx-owned.Nextdoor is teaming up with the group We Are All Human to provide resources to Hispanic-owned small businesses. They'll also provide free advertising during the month.The U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce represents more than 4 million Hispanic-owned businesses. It says Latino business owners have been hit particularly hard during the pandemic and need support.Many have limited relationships with banks and are in neighborhoods considered “challenging” to lend to. Many were left out of the Paycheck Protection Program.“In round one, we saw many Latino-owned businesses were really largely left out of those opportunities,” said Ramiro Cavazos, President of the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. “Half of our businesses have banking relationships. If you did not have a bank relationship, many of them were shut out.”On average, Hispanic-owned businesses only have about 27 days’ worth of capital reserved. A quarter of them have had to close, at least temporarily, since the pandemic began.“Our Latino-owned businesses provide jobs for our community,” said Cavazos. “They also pay taxes and make investments in their community. In the latest scathing allegation against the Catholic church, Pennsylvania's attorney general said the Vatican knew about a cover-up involving sex abuse allegations against priests. "We have evidence that the Vatican had knowledge of the cover-up," Attorney General Josh Shapiro told NBC's "Today" show Tuesday.He later told CNN's Wolf Blitzer, "Once the Vatican learned of it, I do not know if the Pope learned about it or not."The accusation comes two weeks after the release of a grand jury report saying hundreds of "predator priests" had abused children in six Pennsylvania dioceses over the past seven decades.Shapiro did not specify Tuesday what evidence he has that would suggest the Vatican knew of a cover-up."The only documents which are public are in the report itself, including the references to the Vatican's knowledge," Shapiro's spokesman Joe Grace said."All else remains sealed through the grand jury process."Vatican spokesman Greg Burke said the Vatican would need to learn more details about the evidence before commenting.Shapiro said the grand jury's lengthy investigation into abuse by priests also revealed a widespread cover-up "that went all the way to the Vatican.""This coverup served a very specific purpose," Shapiro told CNN."It was not only to cover it up within the parishes, within the churches. IRVINE, Calif. (CNS) - More than 70,000 Orange County residents have been forced from their homes by a wind-whipped wildfire that severely injured two firefighters and was only 5% contained Tuesday.The Silverado Fire had blackened 11,200 acres by Tuesday morning, with 70,000 people under evacuation orders in Irvine and another 6,000 evacuated in Lake Forest, according to the Orange County Fire Authority. More than 750 firefighters have been deployed to battle the flames, and they'll be receiving assistance from 14 helicopters, an OCFA spokesperson said.Unlike most of the day on Monday, firefighters on the ground are being aided by water drops from helicopters, OCFA Capt. Thanh Nguyen said.SILVERADO FIRE MAP, EVACUATION CENTERS"I saw several of them this morning," Nugyen said."It's windy, but not as bad as yesterday," he added. "However, it appears that a lashing wire that was attached to an underbuilt telecommunication line may have contacted SCE's overhead primary conductor which may have resulted in the ignition of the fire."In Irvine, mandatory evacuation orders were issued for the area between Great Park and Bake Parkway, and north of Toledo until the city limits; from Irvine Boulevard south to Trabuco Road, and from Jeffrey Road East to Portola High School; areas north of Irvine Boulevard between Jamboree Road and Bake Parkway.Irvine Mayor Christina Shea said the city opened eight facilities to shelter evacuated residents and several quickly filled up.Irvine Police Department Chief Mike Hamel said city officials were working with the American Red Cross to provide overnight shelter for residents with no place to go. It was just a few days before Thanksgiving, when an 8th grader was shot and killed in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.Sandra Parks was sitting in her room watching TV, when a stray bullet came through the window.“She said, ‘Mama, call the police. I been shot,’” Sandra’s mother, Bernice, describes of that night. “She was laying on the floor. I thought she was playing, but I called the police anyway because I’m like that’s too many gunshots, what the hell is going on?”The 13-year-old’s award-winning essay is now being shared around the world and read on national news outlets. In the young girl’s essay, “Our Truth,” Sandra wrote about gun violence.Sandra’s words are now some of the only things her mom says she has left of her daughter.“I don’t have her flesh. I don’t have her smiling at me all the time. I don’t have what I want, and I want my baby,” Bernice says. “Ain’t nothing gonna make that better. It’s just that being in this house, since she been gone, it’s strange, scary, and it’s unacceptable.”Bernice says her daughter’s words are giving her strength as she prepares for the funeral. The mother hopes Sandra’s essay might prevent another family from going through the same pain.“The stuff that she wrote, people should listen to it. Heed to it. Follow it, because it’s only right that kids should live. Adults should live,” she says. “I don’t think nobody should die, not by the hands of body else for no apparent reason.
