He pointed to a now-scrapped plan to add a mixed-use housing and retail project, plus a park. It would have a new, larger DMV on the south end the 2.5-acre site."This wouldn't be a deadzone every evening, which is what it's become," Wahlstrom said. "It was supposed to have been a dual use site."Christina Valdivia, a DMV spokeswoman, says the mixed-use plan didn't work because it doesn't conform with its vehicle-centric business model.Meanwhile, the Hillcrest Farmers Market is raising issue with the DMV's plan to add a 7-foot-tall wrought iron fence around the property. The market uses the DMV lots for parking and some of its vendors."It would really create this sort of fortress DMV that we are hostile to," said Ben Nichols, who heads the Hillcrest Business Association.Valdivia says the DMV is installing fences at all of its new and replacement buildings to protect against vandalism, theft, damage, and even human waste. Nichols said it would just push those problems onto the public sidewalk.Now, two state legislators, Sen. Toni Atkins, and Asm. Todd Gloria, are getting involved with the project. The plan is currently under environmental review. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- California's energy operator have issued a statewide Flex Alert ahead of anticipated high temperatures this coming weekend.The California Independent System Operator (ISO) is calling for voluntary electricity conservation, from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 14."With high temperatures in the forecast, the power grid operator is predicting an increase in electricity demand, primarily from residential air conditioning use," the ISO said in a statement.In San Diego, an Excessive Heat Warning will be in effect from noon Friday until 8pm Monday from the inland areas to the deserts. The heat will peak on Friday and Saturday with temperatures ranging 5 to 15 degrees above normal.The above-normal temperatures and humidity will stick around through most of next week."Consumers are urged to conserve electricity, especially during the late afternoon and early evening, when the grid is most stressed due to higher demand and solar energy production falling. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Chula Vista City Councilman Steve Padilla, who last week announced he contracted coronavirus, has been hospitalized at UCSD Medical Center after experiencing difficulty breathing, his family announced Thursday.Ashleigh Padilla, Padilla's daughter, said her father "was admitted to UCSD Thornton Hospital ICU where he is receiving additional treatment, including a respirator to aid with difficulty breathing associated with COVID-19."“I know his amazing doctors and nurses are doing everything they can to send him home healthy when this is all over," said Ashleigh Padilla.No further details about his condition were given at this time, but Padilla did issue a warning to the public through his daughter.“My father asked me to pass on a message: Everyone needs to take COVID-19 seriously. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - County health officials are encouraging local women to get vaccinated for "whooping cough" amid a possible epidemic.The county says pertussis, commonly known as "whooping cough," could turn into a possible local epidemic based on historical patterns."It’s critical for pregnant women and people who come into close contact with young infants to get vaccinated," Wilma Wooten, County public health officer, said. "Newborns are very susceptible to whooping cough because they are too young to be fully vaccinated. It is vital for pregnant women to be vaccinated in the third trimester to give protection to their unborn infants."So far in 2018, there have been 56 confirmed cases of pertussis.RELATED: This app says it can help you stay flu-freeLast year, San Diego County recorded at least 1,154 cases, the highest of any county in California.
