Millions of Californians could face energy blackouts this week amid a historic heatwave — a situation described by energy officials as a "perfect storm."According to The Weather Channel, parts of California and the southwestern U.S. are in the midst of a heatwave that is pushing temperatures to, in some cases, 15 degrees above average. Gavin Newsome."These blackouts, which occurred without warning or enough time for preparation, are unacceptable and unbefitting of the nation's largest and most innovative state," Newsom wrote in a letter to CAISO and other California energy agencies.The agency has warned that if the heatwave persists, it may need to continue rotating blackouts to millions of homes and businesses throughout the week to certain sections of the power grid to prevent overtaxing the system.CAISO has issued a Flex Alert throughout the state that is currently in effect until Wednesday. Southwest is also keep the middle seat on flights blocked through at least September.American Airlines said last week that its air filtration system allows for those on board flights to breathe without fear of infection.“Over the past several years, American has been further improving our HEPA filters by adding a layer of activated carbon to our filters to provide additional removal of fumes, odors and volatile organic compounds,” said Ben Thiesse, American’s Senior Engineer for the Airbus A320 Family. “Today, these carbon HEPA filters are installed on all of American’s A320 and 787 aircraft.”United Airlines says, like other airlines, it is relying upon travelers to wear face masks to keep other travelers safe."Every reputable heath institution says wearing a mask is one of the most effective things people can do to protect others from contracting COVID-19, especially in places like an aircraft where social distancing is a challenge," said United's Chief Customer Officer, Toby Enqvist. Millions of homeowners and renters have been struggling to make housing payments since March.“The latest census pulse survey shows about a third of renters have little to no confidence that they will be able to make rent,” said Alieza Durana with Princeton University’s Eviction Lab.It’s been tracking the affordable housing crisis in America, but particularly how that has manifested during this pandemic.“We have counted over 39,000 evictions between March and August,” said Durana.Those evictions took place because the CARES Act’s federal moratorium on eviction only covered tenants in properties with federally backed mortgages, which is estimated to be about a third of all renters.However, more than a month ago, even that partial protection expired, and millions of Americans have been lingering with concern over whether they can keep a roof over their heads.“In the absence of government intervention, it doesn’t look good,” said Durana.Late Tuesday afternoon, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a 37-page order that will ban evictions in order to reduce the spread of coronavirus. The order applies to owners and tenants of “any” residential property.However, there are a few important caveats.First, in order to be protected from eviction, you are required to provide your landlord with a signed copy of the declaration form that is located at the end of the CDC’s order.Secondly, on the form, you have to swear that your income is below the CDC’s outlined threshold and that you are unable to make full rent payment because of a substantial loss of household income.
