LOS ANGELES (AP) — Southern California Edison said Tuesday its equipment likely sparked one of two ignition points for the massive wildfire that tore through California's central coast last year.Witnesses reported flames near the company's power poles in Ventura County last December and the utility "believes that its equipment was associated with this ignition," Edison said.Dozens of lawsuits allege Edison equipment caused the deadly Thomas Fire, but the statement marked the first time the company made such an acknowledgment.Edison hasn't determined if its equipment started the second ignition point nearly 6 miles (10 kilometers) away.Fire officials declined to comment on Edison's statement because no official cause of the fire has been determined. A multi-agency investigation is continuing.Investigators were looking at "every possibility" ranging from weather to human or even animal factors, and the nearly year-long probe probably won't be completed for another 30 days, Ventura County fire Capt. Stan Ziegler said. The Thomas Fire was the second-largest in California history, scorching 440 square miles (1,140 sq. kilometers) and destroying more than 1,000 buildings in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. Two people died.A month later, heavy rains fell on hills left bare by the fire, unleashing mudslides that killed 21 and left two missing.Edison's disclosure came as an update to investors but was released publicly to keep communities and customers informed, the company said. 1505
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A new rule approved by the California Horse Racing Board means jockeys competing in the state won’t be allowed to strike a horse more than six times during a race and then only in an underhanded position. The rule would allow no more than two strikes in succession using whips that must meet new board standards to soften the blows. The board voted 4-2 to approve the rule. Retired Hall of Fame jockey Alex Solis was one of the dissenters. 466
LOS ANGELES (AP) — California is sending every registered voter a mail-in ballot for the November election, but the state will also establish hundreds of locations for people who want — or need — to vote in-person. The decision to send every voter a mail-in ballot was prompted last month by health concerns tied to the coronavirus. Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom says the state will also have a range of options for in-person voting. Counties must open a minimum of one in-person voting location for every 10,000 voters beginning the Saturday before Election Day. In-person voting locations must also allow voters to maintain physical distancing. RELATED:California to send all voters mail-in ballots this NovemberRNC sues Gov. Newsom over order to send mail ballots to all California votersThe executive order will also require ballot drop-box locations be available between Oct. 6 and Nov. 3. In-person voting sites will be available in county elections offices starting 29 days before Election Day.Republicans have been critical of the state's plans for November. 1073
LONDON (AP) — Scientists at Oxford University say their experimental coronavirus vaccine has been shown in an early trial to prompt a protective immune response in hundreds of people who got the shot. British researchers first began testing the vaccine in April in about 1,000 people, half of whom got the experimental vaccine. Such early trials are usually designed only to evaluate safety, but experts were also looking to see what kind of immune response was provoked. In research published Monday, scientists said that they found their experimental COVID-19 vaccine produced a dual immune response in people who got the shot. 637
Lorde has offered an apology after she was roasted for joking about Whitney Houston and a bathtub. The 21-year-old singer posted a now-deleted Instagram photo of a tub being filled with running water and captioned it, "And iiii will always love you," a lyric from Houston's 1992 recording of the Dolly Parton song "I Will Always Love You."Houston accidentally drowned in a bathtub in a suite at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, in February 2012.Some fans were incensed by the posting and took to social media to vent.Others defended Lorde and insisted the singer didn't mean to make a joke of Houston's death. The New Zealand native posted a note on her Instagram Stories to apologize."Extremely extremely poorly chosen quote. I'm so sorry for offending anyone," she wrote. "I hadn't even put this together I was just excited to take a bath.""I'm an idiot," Lorde added. "Love Whitney forever and ever. Sorry again."She even responded in the comments on the Instagram page of gossip site The Shade Room."I was meaning no disrespect and hadn't put anything together because I'm dumb and it's my day off," Lorde wrote. "SORRY." 1153
