The BBB says scammers are trying to convince Windows users that they can pay to update their "expiring Windows license."Here's how the scam works. You receive a call from someone posing as a Microsoft employee, saying you need to upgrade your operating system in order for your computer to keep working. The fake Microsoft employee may tell you that you need to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10, or that your Windows license is expiring. Then, they are going to try to convince you to pay annual fees (that don't exist) in order to update your expired Windows license. They also might request remote access to your computer under the guise of installing new software."If you pay the fees, you could lose hundreds of dollars," the BBB warns. "But if you allow the scammer access to your computer, your secure personal information, such as banking details and login credentials, can be compromised. This puts you at risk for identity theft."Microsoft has confirmed to the BBB that they never reach out to offer support by phone or via pop-up windows on your computer screen. All support requests are initiated by customers. "Microsoft won’t reimburse scam victims for money or gift cards given to scammers, but they are happy to check over your computer to make sure any viruses or malware have been removed," the BBB says. The BBB has the following tips for folks who don't want to fall victim to tech scams:Don’t trust unsolicited callers. Reputable companies don’t call consumers without their permission.Double check unusual claims. If someone calls you claiming you have a problem you had no idea existed, don’t take their word for it. Hang up and do some research before you accept any help. In the BBB Scam Tracker reports, victims report that they were already using Windows 10 when they got a call claiming they needed to upgrade.Never allow a stranger remote access to your computer. If you have a genuine tech problem, get help from a reputable company or individual.Get tech information straight from the source. If your computer runs Windows, for example, find out about updates, new operating systems, and tech support directly from Microsoft. Double check you are on the official website or calling the real support line before you share personal information or pay any money. The Microsoft support website has more information about 2348
The collapse of a section of the structure early Tuesday morning sent concrete tumbling toward the ground, overturning cars and trapping people in the rubble.Fire services chief Emanuele Gissi told CNN Wednesday morning that no new survivors had been found overnight, but three more bodies had been discovered.Teams with dogs are aiding search-and-rescue operations, but rescuers are not hearing or seeing any signs of life, he said, adding that the situation around the bridge site is still dangerous.Photos: The Morandi Bridge collapse in Genoa, ItalyThe head of the Italian Civil Protection Agency, Angelo Borrelli, said about 30 vehicles and several heavy-duty trucks were on the affected section of the bridge when it gave way.Images from the scene showed a mangled mass of buckled vehicles and slabs of bitumen torn up as the bridge, built in the late 1960s, came tumbling down. Italy's President Sergio Mattarella said rescue efforts must be followed by a "serious and severe examination of the causes of what happened."One of the first rescuers to arrive at the site Tuesday told CNN he faced a "devastating scene," the ground littered with cars and debris, and people screaming to be freed."There are so many people that you don't know who to help," Paolo Tropiano said. "We even found a family -- a father, mother and a small child who were together, in a car, and unfortunately the three of them were dead."At one point, Tropiano said he felt debris falling on his head and looked up to see part of the bridge swaying above him. "We just stood still for a second, trying to work out what could happen next," he said.Tropiano is amazed that so many people survived the fall, and hoped others may still be found alive. "Miracles can happen," he said. "That is what we hope for, and what we are here for."With rescue efforts continuing and authorities working to formally identify victims, the city started two days of mourning. The Italian and European Union flags will fly at half-staff on municipal buildings on Wednesday and Thursday, and residents are invited to express their condolences and support for the victims and their families, the mayor's office said.Speaking Wednesday in St. Peter's Square in Vatican City, Pope Francis expressed his sorrow at "the tragedy that occurred yesterday in Genoa" and prayed for all those affected. 2350

The day after Smith was fired, Meyer was asked about the allegations during the Big Ten Conference Football Media Day.Meyer said he was aware of an incident involving Zach and Courtney Smith in 2009, while they were still married. Meyer said he and his wife, Shelley Meyer, "actually both got involved because of our relationship with that family and advised counseling and wanted to help as we moved forward."Meyer said he didn't know anything about the 2015 incident involving the Smiths. In his lengthy statement Friday to Ohio State fans, Meyer referred to the Media Day remarks."My intention was not to say anything inaccurate or misleading ... However, I was not adequately prepared to discuss these sensitive personnel issues with the media, and I apologize for the way I handled those questions."Meyer said he was ready to answer questions from school investigators looking into the matter.College football commentators have called for Meyer to be fired, but Meyer said he looks forward to rejoining the coaching staff soon.Meyer has one of the best college football winning percentages of all time, with 188 wins and only 34 losses in 17 years. He coached the Bowling Green Falcons and Utah Utes before winning two national championships with the Florida Gators. He won a third national championship, with Ohio State, in 2015.Meyer took the helm at Ohio State, one of the country's winningest programs, from Luke Fickell, a longtime Ohio State assistant who ascended to the top job for a year after the once-heralded championship coach Jim Tressel resigned. An NCAA investigation found Tressel knew several players, including his star quarterback, had swapped memorabilia for tattoos and other benefits, but failed to report it. The Buckeyes vacated 12 wins from their 2010 season after the episode.Ohio State athletics came under fire again twice last month. A lawsuit naming the Ohio State University Diving Club accuses former coach William Bohonyi of sexually preying on two divers, one of them a minor. In a separate matter, dozens of former male athletes from 14 Ohio State teams accused former school doctor Richard Strauss of sexual misconduct. Strauss killed himself in 2005. 2192
