XIANGNING, Shanxi, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Eight miners trapped for 35 hours in a flooded colliery in north China's Shanxi Province were saved early Friday, rescuers said. One miner is still missing.The eight survivors were taken to hospital for treatment. They are in stable conditions, said Li Youcai, deputy chief of Shengping Coal Mine Workers' Hospital in Taitou Town.They are expected to recover and be discharged from hospital in one week, Li said.The first four survivors were rescued and sent to hospital at around 2:30 a.m.; the other four miners were helped out of the pit at around 4:10 a.m., rescuers saidThe eight survivors were known to be alive and had been in close contact with the rescuers via phone after the Shengping Coal Mine in Jixian County where they worked was flooded with torrential rain water Wednesday.The accident happened at around 5 p.m. when 23 miners were performing repair work underground. Fourteen miners managed to escape.Rescuers were still trying to find out the whereabouts of the last missing miner, who lost contact with the others after the flood.The Shengping Coal Mine, owned by the Shanxi Coal Transportation and Sales Group Co., Ltd., has an annual output of 900,000 tonnes.

CHANGZHOU, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Saturday called for more favorable policies to encourage the construction of affordable housing.Li made the remarks at a meeting on affordable housing held in Changzhou city of east China's Jiangsu Province.He reiterated that China would complete construction of 5.8 million units of affordable housing, including low-rent housing, public rental housing and resettlement housing for relocated residents from redeveloped urban shanty towns.In May, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development signed an agreement with local governments nationwide to build 5.8 million units of affordable housing."Meanwhile, measures should be taken to increase the supply of commercial housing to meet people's reasonable needs of housing consumption," he said.He said local governments should adopt a realistic approach to affordable housing construction and plans should be based upon local needs.For populous cities, construction should focus on public rental housing that provides homes for low- and medium-income families, newly-employed school graduates and migrant workers, he said.

BEIJING, June 30 (Xinhua) -- The Party School of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, or the Central Party School, opened its door to more than 60 correspondents from domestic and overseas media on Wednesday, one day ahead of the 89th anniversary of the founding of the CPC, on July 1.It was the first time the country's highest institution for the training of high- and middle-level Party officials invited a large group of media workers from home and abroad to tour the mystery-shrouded campus in northwestern Beijing.Forty-two correspondents, photo journalists and TV reporters from major overseas media organizations - including the Associated Press, the Agence France-Presse, the Guardian, CNN and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation - participated.During the two-hour tour Wednesday afternoon, the group attended a press conference, a class and interviewed some teachers and students during their visit to the school's main teaching building, gymnasium, canteen and dormitory building."The Central Party School and the whole Party system haven't interacted much with the outside world -- this is something we are trying to change," said Li Baosheng, the school's vice president.The Party, founded July 1, 1921, is the world's largest political party. It had 78 million members as of last year."The Party system should open up to the outside world because the Party exists to serve the people and the Party has nothing to hide," Li said at the press conference.Some correspondents from overseas media interviewed by Xinhua said they had known nothing about the school before the tour. Other correspondents from domestic media said it was their first time to visit the school.The school's history dates back to the School of Marxism and Communism set up in March 1933. Late chairman Mao Zedong served as president of the school. President Hu Jintao also served as the school's president and its current president is Vice President Xi Jinping.The school has trained 60,00 high- and middle-level officials over three decades. Its curriculum includes Marxism masterpieces and Party principles, western political theory, economics, contemporary law, religion and military affairs.The school has academic cooperation agreements with government departments, research institutes and universities from nearly 30 countries.The media group found the tour interesting, and some even took photographs of the food menu in the canteen. Some walked around the huge campus decorated with trees and fountains like many other college campuses in the world."It's a beautiful campus. The environment here is a great place for study," said Stephen McDonell, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's China correspondent.The tour of the school was welcomed by many correspondents. The school's spokesman, Luo Zongyi, made his debut at a press conference held Tuesday.Some correspondents from overseas media expressed their wish to know more about how the school plays its role as the highest institution."The tour was interesting and the school is probably less mysterious than people think. I hope we will have more opportunities of this kind to visit and see for ourselves and to have interactions with officials, teachers and students as we did today," Jaime A. Florcruz, CNN's Beijing Bureau Chief, said after the tour.Florcruz said that he wanted to interact with teachers and researchers at the school and know their views about international and domestic affairs because "whatever they are thinking and studying here is a reflection of what's going on in China."The school's vice president, Li Baosheng, pledged to organize more activities to help the media know more about the Party system."The Central Party School will not be a mysterious place in the future. BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Wuhan Iron and Steel Company Ltd., the listed subsidiary of China's third largest steel maker, said Sunday that its net profit rose 90.43 percent year on year to 963.53 million yuan (141.7 million U.S. dollars) during the first half of the year as strong economic growth boosted steel demand and prices.The company's first-half-year sales reached 34.36 billion yuan, up 50.72 percent from one year earlier, it said in a statement delivered to the Shanghai Stock Exchange.However, costs also climbed in the first six months compared with a year earlier because of increases in raw material prices, it said.Production costs for steel products gained 47.12 percent year on year to 31.18 billion yuan. Further, the company's steel output in the first half of the year gained 29.75 percent year on year to 8.04 million tonnes.China's producer price index, a major gauge of inflation at the wholesale level, rose 6 percent in the January-June period, according to statistics released by the National Bureau of Statistics.However, the company was likely to face a "difficult time" in the second half of 2010 and meeting its full-year profit target would become a "challenging task" as demand from auto, home appliance and real estate sectors experienced "drastic changes" since July, leading to more restrained sales and falling prices, it said.Company officials also worried that high prices of iron ore, coal and electricity would further push up production costs and squeeze profit margins.On Friday, the price of its shares fell 2.87 percent to 4.73 yuan on the Shanghai bourse.
