(KGTV) — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized more than million worth of narcotics in a single vehicle stop this week.CBP says officers stopped a 55-year-old driver at about 4 a.m. at the Calexico Port of Entry and referred the driver to a secondary inspection, where an x-ray imaging system identified anomalies in the vehicle.A search of the vehicle turned up 20 packages of fentanyl weighing 48 pounds, and 121 packages of methamphetamine weighing 517 pounds hidden in the floor, gas tank, seats, and spare tire.The driver was arrested and turned over to Homeland Security officials. 628

CARLSBAD, Calif. —  Two bodies were found with gunshot wounds in front of a Carlsbad home Tuesday night, just east of Batiquitos Lagoon. The Carlsbad Police were alerted to the situation when they got a 911 call from a man saying he was going to commit suicide in the 2500 block of Navarra Drive, according to police. When they arrived at the home they found a 71-year-old man and 79-year-old woman both with visible gunshot wounds. A handgun was recovered at the scene.Both the man and woman are residents of Carlsbad. Their names are being withheld until family has been notified the by medical examiner.Carlsbad police tell 10News that the preliminary investigation indicates that the pair were married and each suffering from a different medical condition.There are no outstanding suspects and police are investigating the deaths as a possible murder-suicide situation.   943

Businesses may be reopening, but they're still struggling to pay their rent.About 40% of major retailers didn't pay their rent in May, according to numbers from data firm Datex Property Solutions.Some companies are warning they won't be able to pay rent for months. Starbucks for example is asking for landlords to adjust lease terms and rent for at least 12 months.It's an even worse situation for some small businesses.“I would think landlords ordinarily are not that sympathetic, right, because they can get somebody else to pay the bill,” said Jack Strauss, an economics expert and professor at the University of Denver. “In this case, a landlord is foolish to ignore the struggling small business.”Strauss says it will be difficult for landlords to find a new tenant quickly, so they have an incentive to delay or partially reduce rent.Businesses in malls are getting hit especially hard. The country's latest mall owner recently sued Gap over three months of unpaid rent.“Being sued kind of makes sense by the landlord to take a heavy hand, but at the same time, it doesn't make sense because they're going to have a lot of, they're potentially going to have a lot of empty spaces,” said Strauss.Punchbowl Social, a national restaurant and entertainment spot just closed one location in the Denver area and one in the Chicago area, acknowledging that landlords are trying to ensure the success of their business.But the CEO says, "landlords cannot expect to maintain status quo economic terms that were negotiated in pre-pandemic times."Strauss agrees with that. CHICAGO (AP) — Two sisters accused of stabbing a West Side Chicago store security guard 27 times with a knife after he asked them to wear face masks and use hand sanitizer have been ordered held without bond. The alleged attack late Sunday by 21-year-old Jessica Hill and 18-year-old Jayla Hill left the 32-year-old victim hospitalized in critical condition. Police spokeswoman Karie James said Tuesday an argument that began after the women refused the guard’s request to wear masks became physical when one of the women punched the man. Jessica Hill allegedly pulled a knife and began stabbing the man, while Jayla Hill held him by his hair. During a Tuesday bond hearing, the women’s court-appointed attorney said both women suffer a bipolar disorder. 762

Canada is the latest country to approve a COVID-19 vaccine candidate made by Pfizer and BioNTech, according to ABC News and the Washington Post.On Monday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that the vaccine would arrive in Canada next week and that doses would be distributed at that time.The FDA is expected to meet tomorrow to discuss granting Emergency Use Authorization to the Pfizer vaccine. Approval is expected, and Americans may begin receiving doses as soon as next week.The drug has already been administered to some patients in the United Kingdom, who approved the vaccine for emergency use last week.
