Residents will vote on the matter this November.If the measure is passed, the young people would be able to participate in local elections, which usually don't have high turnout.“They've seen that by extending voting rights to people of that age, they've actually increased the level of interest and attention in local politics, not only in those who are newly able to vote, but among their parents and their communities as well,” said Brandon Klugman, Vote 16 Campaign Manager at Generation Citizen.Critics question if teens are mature enough and educated enough to vote.Researchers in Austria, where the national voting age starts at 16, found teens are not likely to be less educated or less motivated to participate in voting.The campaign Vote 16 USA says teens are not likely to make rushed or stressed decisions when it comes to voting.They say teens are more likely to be in a stable environment, where they're surrounded by family, peers, and educators.“In a stable environment, it's great to establish the habit of voting, whereas at 18 on the other hand, most folks are in some sort of intense transition, whether that's joining the workforce, starting college, moving away from home, or going after some sort of transition,” said Klugman.Advocates say this will help in creating a life-long habit of voting.Oakland, California, is considering a similar measure, but it would only allow young voters to participate in school board elections.Several cities in Massachusetts and Maryland have passed similar measures. SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Firefighters were able to knock down a two acre brush fire in San Ysidro Sunday morning. According to San Diego Fire Rescue, the fire sparked just before 7:20 a.m. in a rural canyon east of San Ysidro. The department says, due to the difficult terrain, crews had to be flown in to fight the blaze. (CNS) - Kobe Bryant's widow, Vanessa, responded Thursday to a lawsuit filed against her by her mother demanding financial support and claiming the late Laker legend had vowed to take care of her financially for life.In a statement posted online, Vanessa Bryant accused her mother -- Sofia Urbieta Laine -- accused her mother of trying to "extort a financial windfall from our family." Bryant said she and her husband long supported her, allowing her to live in their properties free of charge."She was a grandmother who was supported by me and her son-in-law at my request," Bryant said. "She now wants to back charge me per hour for supposedly working 12 hours a day for 18 years for watching her grandchildren. (KGTV) -- Two people were injured after the driver of a Prius slid down the side of a hill in San Marcos Sunday morning.According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the crash happened around 9:20 a.m. at San Elijo Road and Schoolhouse Way.The department says an 84-year-old driver was traveling too fast when he tried to make a turn, hit a curb, and slid down the hill.Both the driver and a 77-year-old female passenger were taken to the hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries, the department says. 554

(KGTV) — Four Congressmen, including House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, Scott Peters, Juan Vargas, and Mike Levin, participated in an all-access tour of the San Ysidro Land Port of Entry Friday afternoon. Upon finishing the tour, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland said sternly, “There is no crisis at the border. There is no justification for an emergency declaration at the border.” This was a direct contradiction to President Trump's reasoning to build a southern border wall. It has been almost one month since the Department of Homeland Security began implementing the new Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP). The policy forces migrants from Central and South America entering the United States without papers, or those claiming asylum, to in Mexico for the duration of their immigration proceedings. According to the Mexican Citizen Council for Public Safety and Criminal Justice, Tijuana has the fifth highest murder rate in the world. Because of that, Representative Juan Vargas (CA-51-D) strongly rejected MPP.“To be sent back to a place like Tijuana, where they don’t have family, friends, where they don’t have the social connections to be helped and to be safe, I don’t think we should be doing it. I think it is the wrong thing to do. I don’t think it’s our American values," said Vargas.Previous to the new MPP, migrants were released into the United States after their initial process, under the assumption they would return to US Immigration Court at a later time to receive their final status. But Homeland Security said that too many migrants would skip court, and disappear into the US as fugitives. That’s a better percentage than the people who show up who are on parole in the United States of America for crimes,” Representative Hoyer said. After touring the facility, the Democrats agreed, solving the immigration issue is not as simple as building a physical wall. Overcrowding the ports with seemingly endless asylum seekers is not the answer either.
