CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) -- Cameron Wetzler's downtown skate shop almost made the Guinness Book of World Records for being the smallest skate shop on Earth. Instead, the building could be torn down.In July, Wetzler subleased the 100-square-foot building in a downtown Carlsbad parking lot and opened Elm Street Board Shop. He had a local artist spruce up the outside with images of Carlsbad at sunset and a Freddie Krueger theme."All the kids have been skating here for two generations and anybody who lives down here always thought this should be a skate shop," he said. "We really wanted it to be part of the look of Carlsbad and to fit with sort of the real local community."Devlin said glassblowing is becoming rare these days, and was inspired after a trip to Murano Island in Venice with her son. (KGTV) — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized more than million worth of narcotics in a single vehicle stop this week.CBP says officers stopped a 55-year-old driver at about 4 a.m. at the Calexico Port of Entry and referred the driver to a secondary inspection, where an x-ray imaging system identified anomalies in the vehicle.A search of the vehicle turned up 20 packages of fentanyl weighing 48 pounds, and 121 packages of methamphetamine weighing 517 pounds hidden in the floor, gas tank, seats, and spare tire.The driver was arrested and turned over to Homeland Security officials. 628

California, get ready for nonstop flights to Hawaii on Southwest Airlines. Southwest Airlines announced on Thursday that four California cities will serve nonstop flights to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu (HNL), Kahului Airport on Maui (OGG), Lihue Airport on Kauai (LIH), and Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole (KOA). Southwest Airlines plans to fly to those Hawaiian cites from Oakland Metropolitan Airport (OAK), San Diego International Airport (SAN), Mineta San Jose International Airport (SJC) and Sacramento International Airport (SMF). The Texas-based airline plans to sell tickets to Hawaii sometime in 2018. The service plans are pending FAA approval.  743

CHICAGO, Ill. – In 2016, some 33 million ballots were cast by mail, about one quarter of all votes cast. With pandemic protocols and precautions in place, experts estimate a record-breaking number of mail-in votes this election cycle.Voting by mail has been in place for more than 150 years – since the Civil War.“It's become so common in the United States that since 2010, about a quarter of the electorate has voted by mail in federal elections,” said Lawrence Norden, director of the Election Reform Program at the non-partisan Brennan Center for Justice.Some states have what’s known as a universal vote-by-mail system, which means they mail ballots to all their voters. But in most states, voters must request an absentee ballot.“Most of them have made exceptions for 2020, because of COVID and so what we have left is only a handful of states where you need an excuse to vote by mail,” said Norden.According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, normally 34 states and Washington, D.C. allow no-excuse absentee/mailed ballot voting. (KGTV) - Nearly two and a half miles of the current border wall along the U.S.-Mexico border in Calexico are being replaced with 30-foot high, bollard-style walls.The section of the replacement, which broke ground last week, extends from the Calexico Port of Entry westward just past Gran Plaza Outlets, according to Customs and Border Protection officials.
