CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- Even though his truck does not have sirens and his uniform does not offer added fire protection, Anthony Gaskins is considered a hero in the Hallsley neighborhood in Chesterfield County, Virginia.Gaskins is a driver for UPS and during the pandemic, his daily deliveries have been life-saving, both literally and figuratively, to the Midlothian neighbors. "Through COVID, Anthony has continued working, delivering packages at our doors, record numbers of them, over 180 times to date," Hallsley neighbor Patty Friedman wrote in an email. "I wanted to thank him personally for how much he helped me feel welcome when I moved in during a pandemic. It was terribly lonely and he was always the highlight of my day. Mentioning this to a few people and the response I got was all I needed to know I was not alone." 844

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) — A German father and son had the summer vacation of a lifetime spanning seven countries, eight cities, and eight theme parks.Better yet, they pulled off the feat in a mere 13 days.Dieter Deussen and his five-year-old son, Julian, finished the last leg of their journey to visit all Legoland theme parks in the world Tuesday. Deussen began the trek wanting to give his son a special experience before he starts school for the first time in September, according to Legoland.RELATED: Legoland offers guests free admission on their birthday in 2019His son being a big Lego fan, Deussen suggested the global tour. The trip took the father eight months of planning, hours he said he would never trade. “100 percent it was worth it. To see Julian smile so much at every park and interact with children from around the world, regardless of the language difference, was amazing for me to see. I would absolutely do it again," Deussen said.In less than two weeks, the duo completed a world tour of all eight of the theme parks:June 27 – LEGOLAND Windsor June 28 – LEGOLAND BillundJune 30 – LEGOLAND DeutschlandJuly 1 – LEGOLAND DubaiJuly 3 – LEGOLAND MalaysiaJuly 5 – LEGOLAND JapanJuly 7 – LEGOLAND CaliforniaJuly 8-9 – LEGOLAND FloridaIn Carlsbad, the father and son began their stay at the Legoland Castle Hotel, before exploring Miniland U.S.A, the deep sea on the Lego City Deep Sea Adventure Submarine ride, and meeting a throng of Lego characters. And, of course, playing with a bunch of Legos.RELATED: Recreation Destination: San Diego ranks at top of U.S. citiesLegoland says the pair's journey isn't quite complete though. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - A North County 7th grade teacher is the SDCCU Classroom Hero for the month of June. This social studies instructor has a knack for engaging students by asking them to step into the shoes of those they're learning about."Now, when we look at America, it's a little different here right?" Joe Heath queries his social studies class at Aviara Oaks Middle School in Carlsbad.Heath has been teaching for more than 30 years, and this day has his 7th graders focused on pre-20th century Japanese culture."Most of the marriages were actually arranged," Heath explains to one student. "Your Mom or your Dad choosing your spouse. How would you feel about that?" For Coach Heath, as his students like to call him, Social Studies is about connecting and empathizing with people who lived through a different time and culture - not simply memorizing abstract names and dates. "I don't take that approach." said Heath, "In large part because I don't remember those names or those dates. I'm really good with remembering concepts and how people dealt with difficulties historically....and those same difficulties we face today.""It's not just absorbing facts where you write it down and then say it later," said student Rylan Hoffius. "It's actually talking about it and understanding the deeper meanings of it." Coach Heath's lectures are like conversations as he prompts his students to take part. "With many little strokes, a large tree is felled. What does that mean?""He knows every one of his kids." said Aviara Principal Rose Flowers. She says Heath's approach resonates so well with students, discussions often continue outside the classroom. And as students relate to their study subjects, their bond also grows with their teacher."We as adults, when we make those strong connections, which Coach Heath does, it reconnects these kids to that familiar figure that an adult can be trusted," said Flowers. "You can connect with them and work hard for them. And those kids will work hard for him."For June, we honor Joseph Heath as a Classroom Hero. SDCCU is proudly honoring local teachers through SDCCU Classroom Heroes, launched in partnership with iHeartMedia, Inc. San Diego. Teachers, students, parents and the community are encouraged to nominate a deserving teacher by visiting sdccu.com/classroomheroes . 2338

Celebrating the newest Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees will look a different this year because of the coronavirus pandemic. Organizers announced they will replace the annual live ceremony with an exclusive special honoring this year’s inductees. The program will be available on HBO and to stream on HBO Max on November 7, replacing the 35th annual live ceremony originally scheduled for May 2 of this year.“To protect the health and safety of our Inductees, their families, crews, and our attendees, we’ve made the decision that the scheduled live event is not possible,” said John Sykes, Chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation in a statement. “Together with HBO and executive producer Joel Gallen, we will still create an exciting program honoring our 2020 inductees, by telling the stories of their incredible contributions to music and impact on a generation of artists that followed them.”The 2020 Inductee class includes Depeche Mode, The Doobie Brothers, Whitney Houston, Nine Inch Nails, The Notorious B.I.G., T-Rex, and Ahmet Ertegun Award honorees Jon Landau and Irving Azoff.Visitors can now visit the Rock Hall. The museum will debut the 2020 Inductee exhibit on Aug. 14.The 2021 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will move to the fall with the 36th Induction Ceremony returning to Cleveland.RELATED: Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announces 2020 Inductee class Ticketmaster purchasers will automatically be issued a refund to their account.WEWS' Kaylyn Hlavaty first reported this story. 1541

CAMP PENDLETON (KGTV) - Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton is balancing mitigating risk of exposure to the coronavirus with training to keep Marines ready for deployment."Changes of command are smaller, retirements are smaller," Col. Jeff Holt, Deputy Commander for Marine Corps Installations West, Camp Pendleton, said.At changes of command, Marines are masked and six feet apart, and large formations are no more."We have mitigation measures to protect our people but life's not perfect, life gets in the way. We have to overcome those obstacles and challenges because we have a greater mission and that is to our nation," Col. Holt said. The Marines take pride in the 'First to Fight' motto. The 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) is deployed in Jordan and the 15th MEU is preparing to deploy. Coronavirus is not creating a delay."There are choices that are made to protect the people but also to replicate what we would face in combat because the requirements of the Marine Corps do not stop," Co. Holt said Marines are training the way they would fight overseas.Units are quarantined for two weeks before and after deployment to ensure everyone is healthy. When units are training they are isolating, they do not go home each night. Marines are asked health screening questions and given temperature checks. It's not just training that has changed, the commissary and thrift store have a strict cleaning schedule and safety barriers just like San Diego's grocery stores.Col. Holt said they've been learning from San Diego and took notes, implementing strategies used at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar when flights from Wuhan, China arrived. The plane was carrying U.S. citizens that were stranded in Wuhan because of the coronavirus outbreak. At Camp Pendleton, restaurants are also similar to what you would see around the county. The only exception is the chow hall, Col. Holt said, "you might have a table of six that only has two people at it and you sit diagonally six-foot across."Gyms are similarly spaced out and cleaned often.Co. Holt has the same hope many San Diegans share, "we're all kind of hopeful to move on, for schools to open up... to regain that societal connection." 2199
