ESCONDIDO (KGTV) - In one of the closest races this election cycle in San Diego County, Escondido Mayor Sam Abed added nine votes to his narrow lead Tuesday. He now holds a 29-vote advantage over challenger Paul McNamara.Abed is seeking a third term as mayor, first winning in 2010. He was previously a councilman from 2004-2010.Political analyst John Dadian told 10News he did not anticipate the race being so close. "I did not see it coming, so I am suprised. Going into the last week of the campaign, all the people I talked to that really know that area well, they did not see this coming."Dadian feels several factors are playing a role in tightening the race. He cites changing demographics in Escondido, pulling away from the city's long-time conservative majority. Another conservative incumbent, Ed Gallo, appears to be losing his seat, as well.In addition, Democrats in the region had a large turnout, based largely on the unsuccessful effort to oust Congressman Duncan Hunter. That large turnout may have had a down-ballot effect on the mayoral race.Dadian also sites Abed's controversial stance on immigration, leading Escondido's bid to support efforts against California's sanctuary laws and visiting the White House for a highly-publicized meeting with President Trump. Dadian believes that may have helped enthuse opposition against Abed.As of Tuesday night, Registrar of Voters Michael Vu says there are still 299,000 ballots to count county-wide. It is not known how many of those belong to Escondido voters, meaning it will likely be several days until the winner is known. 1630
Farm life is not easy, but sometimes that life picks you.“When we were little boys, I think it was my dad pushing us out the door all the time,” said orchard owner Curtis Rowley, with a laugh. “As you get older, it gets it your blood and you seem to stay around.”Rowley is a fourth-generation farmer in rural Utah.“Here on the side of us, we have a tart cherry orchard,” Rowley said, motioning with his hand. “We also have a gala block of apples.”However, Rowley’s specialty is peaches.“I know when they are perfect, not by color, not but size, but when I cut them open and smell them,” he said.Knowledge passed down through his family taught him how to dodge the always humming farm equipment. He knows what to do when mother nature turns on the AC. Unfortunately, there are some things that even a seasoned farming family cannot plan for.“We were still pruning when the COVID-19 pandemic hit,” Rowley said.Like many in this business, Rowley relies on outside help for planting, pruning and harvesting. He uses the H-2A government program that allows U.S. employers to bring foreign nationals in to fill temporary agricultural jobs.“As they shut down the Mexico border at the end of March, our guys happened to be right there at the time,” he explained.Rowley said luckily, the group got through, but now, it is the harvest and it’s all hands on deck.He is feeling the pinch.“It’s really tight,” Rowley said. “I won’t tell you it’s perfect.”The window for picking does not stay open for long.“We have somewhere between three and maybe four days if we’re lucky,” he said.Rowley said he has tried other options, like offering jobs to people furloughed or laid off.“They’ll come and help for a bit, but as soon as their jobs open back up, they leave and that’s understandable,” he said. The timing of the harvest also coincides with schools starting.“To hire high school kids to pick apples is just not going to happen,” he said.Rowley said they will squeeze through the fall harvest, but others will not be as lucky.“There’s a lot of people still looking for help,” he said.As for the future, this farmer said his family will remain planted, ready to weather whatever storm comes their way.“We’re planning on being here farming and continuing to grow this fruit,” he said. 2278

Facing death, 17-year-old Hannah Carbocci wanted her big sister.A bullet had just pierced the wall of her classroom at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Gunshots -- a lot of them -- had exploded. Someone in her class was hurt. Someone else, somewhere, was yelling. 303
Facebook announced today it is removing hundreds of pages and accounts run by people in the U.S. who are spreading misinformation. The social media platform's staff identified 559 pages and 251 accounts, and among those is Right Wing News, which has more than 3 million followers, the New York Times reports. Left-wing pages identified in the group include the Resistance and Reverb Press (816,000 followers). It's the most domestic accounts and pages Facebook has removed, officials with the platform said. They violate the rules about online spam, and are financially motivated, according to the NY Times report.False narratives on social media were once known as something mostly done by Russian-linked operatives. It's now become something created more in the U.S., the Times said.Researchers said it's harder to root out false information that's from the U.S. than foreign countries. That's because it "mirrors genuine networks of Americans engaging in free speech online," the Times reports. 1003
