SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department is increasing staffing ahead of Santa Ana winds expected to swirl around the county to start the work week. On Sunday, 10News got a hands-on tour of Station 14 in North Park. It is one of five San Diego Fire stations with an engine, ladder truck, and now a fully staffed brush truck for the next two days. "Our brush rigs are always able to be covered," San Diego Fire-Rescue Deputy Chief Kelly Zombro said. "We just have to un-staff a rig to move over to it. In this case, those rigs are actually covered right now, and they can all go."Because of the upcoming Santa Ana winds, the Department is staffing 25 additional crew members, specifically for wildfires. While engines and ladder trucks are most commonly used in day-to-day operations, the 0,000 brush truck is on a league of its own."It's imperative that we are able to make access quickly into areas where the engine cannot get into," Fire Engineer, Tim Swanson said. "And that's why we have these brush rigs."Unlike the concrete jungle in New York City, the City of San Diego has many different kinds of terrain. Because of that, in the academy, all firefighters are trained in all three truck types: engine, ladder, and brush. The brush truck has off-road tires, a 600-gallon tank, and specialized tools like backfire canisters, burn-over protection, and this triple hose backpack. The truck may even become a mobile home for the crew. That is why it has comfortable seats and carries household items. "If we're out on a strike team, we are gone for sometimes two weeks at a time with little to no ground support," Swanson said. "So, we need to be self-sufficient for two weeks."Even if fires do not erupt in our area, they are always ready to go."Sometimes, when [Northern California] is asking for help, we have to do it," Deputy Chief Zombro said. "And we just have to up our game down here to make sure we stay covered, and we've always done that."After two days, the department will re-assess to see if they need to continue the increased staffing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department gave 10News a behind the scenes look at the specially-trained team that solves arson cases. Inside Station One is the elite and highly specialized Metro Arson Strike Team, or MAST, made up of fire investigators, police detectives, ATF, FBI and a bomb squad. The team is dedicated solely to investigate arson. To be on the specialized team, MAST training goes beyond the fire academy. “You are wearing the hat of an electrical engineer, a scientist, a fire fighter, a report writer. We wear a lot of different hats and we have to be good at it,” said Captain James Shadoan. MAST spent the day with 10News demonstrating how they perform the task of solving an arson. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The race for California's 50th Congressional District is zeroing in on two candidates following Super Tuesday.Former City Councilmember Carl DeMaio conceded Tuesday, leaving the path clear for the March Primary's top two vote-getters Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar and Former Republican Rep. Darrell Issa."While I am disappointed, I am filled with two other emotions: gratitude for supporters like you and pride in the incredible campaign we ran," DeMaio's statement read. "In the coming days I will share more details of how we will deploy our political operation as we pivot to the November election and hope you will be willing to continue to be involved in the fight."Campa-Najjar topped the nine-candidate field with 36 percent of the vote, followed by Issa with 23 percent, DeMaio with 20 percent, and Sen. Brian Jones with 11 percent. The traditionally conservative 50th Congressional District once led by Rep. Duncan Hunter was left vacant following Hunter's guilty plea to misusing 0,000 in campaign funds and resignation in January. In a statement, Issa thanked DeMaio and Jones on hard-fought campaigns.“Carl DeMaio and Brian Jones both worked hard in this campaign to present voters with their vision for the future of our country. They deserve credit for a hard-fought campaign, and I appreciate that they’ve both expressed their commitment to uniting to make sure the 50th District continues to be represented by a Republican," Issa said in a statement. 1493

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The trial for a former San Diego County sheriff's deputy accused of sexual misconduct while wearing his uniform began Monday in Vista.More than a dozen women claim Deputy Richard Fischer made unwanted advances."I think he's a bad guy," a San Marcos woman, who filed ,000,000 claim against the County, said. She said in August of 2017 two sheriff's deputies knocked on her door in the middle of the night for a welfare check. There was no problem and they left but she said Fischer returned alone an hour later, saying he needed to use her restroom; then told her she was cute and hugged her, several times."I was stunned shocked, it was very fast and confusing...I felt very vulnerable, intimidated, felt weak. I felt little." She said, next to tears. "It's just a mess! Everything is a mess! This is hard to do. He shouldn't have come back to my house and I don't ... Everything's a mess!"Similar instances were described by other women. In October of 2017, near the entryway of a 64-year-old woman's condo, Fischer took her report for a domestic violence incident and then made his move."His hands went all the way down to her butt and he squeezed both of her buttocks... he took her hand and pulled it down to his groin area," Lawyer Dan Gilleon said. He represents several women who filed claims against Fischer.Gilleon made a theme apparent, "he knows that she's alone, and she's vulnerable, and she's scared." Another victim called him a predator. Some women who came forward claim Fischer became more brazen, forcing sexual acts.Wednesday a plea deal fell through. The deal would mean Fischer would plead guilty to four felony charges -- down from more than 12 felonies -- and serve no more than five years in prison.10News learned that Fischer would also have to register as a sex offender for life under the plea deal.Fischer faces more than 25 years in prison if convicted of all charges. He has emphatically denied the allegations.Read Related:7th woman accuses San Diego County Sheriff's Deputy Richard Fischer of inappropriate behavior5th accuser accuses San Diego Sheriff's deputy of inappropriate behaviorSecond woman accuses San Diego Sheriff's deputy of inappropriate behaviorSan Diego County sheriff's deputy accused of sexual misconduct pleads not guilty 2300
