RICHMOND, Va. -- Markeisha Harris-Minor is a young entrepreneur who has always considered herself to be a resource to people. And she has always wanted to do it, as she says, on a macro level.So, last December, she came up with an idea for a new app she calls Blocal Search.What is it?“This is a nationwide directory and app for locating Black-owned businesses all across the country," Harris-Minor, CEO of Blocal Search, said.Harris-Minor said she was constantly seeing the Black dollar recycle in front of her eyes. That’s why she said it was important for her to find an avenue that would allow the money to stay in local neighborhoods, especially in a moment in time where a demand to support Black businesses is on the rise.“Because we all know that buying Black right now, it’s something that’s important. It may look more trendy or what have you, but I want to make sure I’m pushing it to be a lifestyle, so just kind of changing that focus and perspective, like why am I really buying Black?” she said.Ajay Brewer, owner of Brewer’s Café on the city’s south side, added his business to Blocal Search this year.“I’ve had several people tell me that they’ve found me through Blocal, so any sort of search engine that creates that sort of awareness for us is really priceless. It’s created revenue for Brewer’s Café for sure," Brewer said.Harris-Minor said she has over 150 local businesses -- like restaurants, juice bars, beauty supplies, family dentistry, and more -- in the app.The number is even higher nationwide. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California has recorded a half-million coronavirus cases in the last two weeks, overwhelming hospitals in urban centers and rural areas. Gov. Gavin Newsom says a projection model shows California could have 100,000 hospitalizations in the next month. Mobile field hospitals are being set up outside facilities to supplement available bed space. At least three are being set up in the Los Angeles and Orange County area, which hit 0% ICU bed availability last week. Other "alternative care" facilities, as the governor refers to them, have been set up near Sacramento and along the Mexican border about 50 miles east of San Diego.“The ICU is at 105% capacity,” Orange County Supervisor Doug Chaffee said of St. Jude. “They’re using every available bed. The emergency department has an overflow ... All the Orange County hospitals are in the same situation. It is dire, so they’ll soon be erecting a tent in the parking lot, probably for triage. I think what we’re seeing is not a surge, but a tsunami.”The governor says he’s likely to extend his stay-at-home order for much of the state. He acknowledged the orders for the Southern California and San Joaquin Valley regions will probably be extended. The orders remain in place for three weeks, and are triggered when a region's available ICU bed capacity dips below 15%. Both of those regions, which combined cover 23 of 58 counties and the lower half of the state, have an ICU bed availability level of 0% according to the California Department of Public Health. The 5.6 cent increase per gallon comes as GasBuddy reports that prices in the rest of the country could fall below by the end of the year. The gas tax hike also comes amid reports of an increased number of bridges around the state in poor condition. SACRAMENTO (KGTV) -- California ranks 37th in the nation for DUI fatalities and some cities have a DUI fatality rate two times higher than the state average, according to a new study.According to the study by ValuePenguin.com, mid-sized cities in The Golden State pose the largest risk.The study shows that several mid-sized cities, Barstow, Desert Hot Springs and San Pablo had an average of more than 10 DUI-related fatalities per 100,000 residents in recent years, or more than 10 times the state average.The study also found that five California cities, Vista, Hemet, Delano, Murrieta and Pittsburg saw DUI fatalities increase between 140 to 700 percent between 2012 and 2017.See the chart below for the complete list of cities with the highest DUI fatalities:  783

Riding in vehicles after the pandemic could look different for a while. Ridesharing company Lyft will be distributing partitions to drivers as they make changes to address the COVID-19 pandemic and CDC guidelines.In a blog post Friday, Lyft said they are establishing new health and safety standards, including riders and drivers certifying they are symptom-free, wearing masks throughout the ride, and vehicle partitions.Partitions have been available to identified frequent Lyft drivers and those in the company’s Express Drive rental program in Atlanta, Denver and Baltimore. They will be coming to other large cities next before being rolled out to 60,000 drivers in the coming months. Some drivers will receive partitions for free, others will be able to purchase one from Lyft. The blog post did not make it clear how it was deciding who got a free partition. “By prioritizing the wellbeing of our drivers, our entire community gains extra peace of mind,” Angie Westbrock, VP of Global Operations, said in the company’s blog post.Lyft’s competitor, Uber, has rolled out safety measures including providing cleaning supplies to drivers, providing a curbside/doorstep drop-off option in their Uber Eats product and recommending riders sit in the back of the vehicle and drivers keep windows open when possible. 1322
