SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An emaciated dog found Friday in Bandy Canyon remains in critical condition but has shown some signs of improvement, the San Diego Humane Society's animal care staff reported today.A county resident brought the 2-year old male pit bull mix to the Humane Society's Escondido campus after finding him extremely dehydrated and cold, with pressure sores on his hips and knees. Humane Society veterinarians are working to feed and re-hydrate the dog slowly so as not to damage his body in its current fragile state.According to the organization, it could take between seven and 10 days for the dog to turn a corner and begin to recover. Humane Society staff are hopeful that will happen."When I found him he was extremely lethargic and weak,'' said Humane Society Law Enforcement Sgt. Lauren Monreal. "He's since received fluids, some electrolytes and ... even despite his horrible condition, he wags his tail.''The organization's Law Enforcement unit opened a felony cruelty investigation on Friday into the dog's abandonment and who may be responsible. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man accused of fatally beating a fellow transient with a mini sledgehammer as the two argued along a Midway District street was ordered Monday to stand trial on a murder charge.Greg Repp Jennings, 53, is accused in the Jan. 8, 2018, slaying of 37- year-old Michael Anthony Dean, who was struck several times in the head with a four-pound hammer.First responders found Dean lying face-up in the street with his face "caved in," according to preliminary hearing testimony. He was pronounced dead at the scene, near 3805 Midway Drive.According to testimony from SDPD Detective Sgt. Christopher Leahy, one witness told investigators that an argument sparked the killing, which began when Jennings was talking loudly at a bus stop. Dean, who was also sitting at the bus stop, asked Jennings to "tone it down," angering the defendant, who told him "it was his First Amendment right and he wasn't going to shut up," Leahy said.Other witnesses also saw the men arguing and then saw Dean fall into the street, at which point Jennings allegedly struck him with the hammer multiple times.Jennings told investigators that he acted in self-defense, according to testimony. He alleged Dean had tied a pair of workboots together by the laces and was going to use the improvised weapon to attack him.Jennings remained at the scene and was arrested by responding officers.The defendant remains in custody without bail. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Federal agents thwarted a maritime human smuggling attempt off the coast of San Diego Tuesday morning, taking 14 undocumented immigrants into custody and arresting two of them on suspicion of leading the group illegally into U.S. waters. Personnel with the U.S. Coast Guard spotted the border-crossers' boat heading north without running lights near the international marine boundary at about midnight, according to U.S. Border Patrol public affairs. Agents with Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations intercepted the camouflage-painted pleasure craft roughly eight miles west of Mission Bay and took the occupants -- two women and 12 men -- into custody.
