AMHERST, N.Y. — 8-year-old Caleb Kabala of Amherst said he has a passion for helping other people.“I just like helping other kids and it makes me feel good,” he said. And while Caleb is just a kid himself, he’s proving you are never too young to give back.“I just wanted to help children cause that’s what I usually do.”For the last two weeks, Caleb and his grandma have been selling framed pictures of Santa at pop-up events throughout Western New York. And the Santa seen in each picture frame is the colorful creation of Caleb himself.“The outpouring that he has gotten it's just been... it hasn't stopped," Caleb's grandma said. Money from every picture sold goes straight to charity.“This week we’re gonna donate to the little heroes," Caleb said. "And every other week we’re gonna pick a different charity to donate to.”Caleb plans on selling these picture frames year-round and with different themes. And his reasoning for it was simple.“So I can help out more and more kids,” he said.Right now, Caleb’s picture frames can be purchased on his website for . ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Los Angeles Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs died Monday at the age of 27, stunning Major League Baseball and leading to the postponement of the team's game against the Texas Rangers.Skaggs was with the team in Texas when he was found unresponsive in his hotel room. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said they are investigating, but no foul play is suspected at this time.Skaggs was "an important part of the Angels Family," the team said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Carli and his entire family during this devastating time."Skaggs had been a regular in the Angels' starting rotation since late 2016, when he returned from Tommy John surgery. He struggled with injuries repeatedly over the past three seasons, but persevered to become a valuable starter in Los Angeles' injury-plagued rotation. The left-hander had just pitched on Saturday, allowing two runs in 4 1/3 innings in a 4-0 loss to Oakland.Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said he was "deeply saddened" by Skaggs' death."We will support the Angels' organization through this most difficult period, and we will make a variety of resources available to Tyler's teammates and other members of the baseball family," Manfred said in a statement.Skaggs was born in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Woodland Hills, in the far western part of the sprawling San Fernando Valley. He graduated from Santa Monica High School in 2009, when the Angels drafted him in the first round. The Angels traded Skaggs to Arizona in 2010, and he started his big-league career with 13 appearances over two seasons for the Diamondbacks. The Angels reacquired him in December 2013, and he has won 25 games over five seasons with the club.Skaggs started a career-high 24 games last season, going 8-10 with a 4.02 ERA. He missed playing time in April this season with a sprained ankle, but came back strong.Skaggs was part of the same Angels draft class as Mike Trout, and they were roommates in the low minor leagues before Skaggs was traded to Arizona. They played on the same team in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 2010.Skaggs' mother, Debbie, was the longtime softball coach at Santa Monica High School. She famously provided postgame tips on his pitching mechanics, even deep into his big-league career.Skaggs grew up in Santa Monica, on the west side of the sprawling Los Angeles metroplex, but rooted for the Angels instead of the closer Dodgers. 2445

Are you tired? Tired of the lack of normalcy, the closed public spaces, the news that we are trending in the wrong direction with this pandemic?COVID-19 fatigue is a real thing, and it’s affecting billions of people around the world.“It’s a very uncomfortable experience for us as human beings to not have a plan and not know how is this going to turn out,” said Dr. Kaye Hermanson.Hermanson is a clinical psychologist at UC Davis Health and compares the emotional fatigue to climbing a mountain. You have just spent hours hiking up, and just when you think you have hit the peak, you realize it is a false summit and see this daunting second hill in front of you. That sinking feeling knowing you have done so much, yet still have so much longer to go, is what Hermanson says this second spike in COVID-19 numbers can feel like."We’re actually hoping for the absence of something,” said Hermanson. "Not getting sick isn’t quite as reinforcing as something that happens where we’re like, ‘Oh, I did this behavior and it resulted in this good outcome.'"“[Fatigue] can be internal, where you feel like you’ve got these sandbags on your shoulders and you can’t take another step,” added Bob Ciampi.Ciampi is a licensed clinical social worker and says the feeling is something a lot of us are familiar with: burnout. The same kind you might feel at work or at home when you are overwhelmed. To ‘refill the tank,’ many people might go out for a night of fun with friends, or go to the gym, but COVID-19 has closed many of these places nationwide only exacerbating the issue. So, it begs the question: what can we do?“The things that we need to do are be aware of our thinking,” said Dr. Hermanson. "To say I’ll control what I can control. I’ll take it a minute at a time.”“Some people call that bite-sized pieces,” added Ciampi.Ciampi and Hermanson say the idea is to make things more manageable. Instead of looking at the daunting whole, they suggest breaking it up into more attainable parts.Small victories can help give that reinforcement. “It can be a little bit of learned helplessness,” she said. “It’s the idea that in certain circumstances where we feel like nothing we do is good enough, nothing that we do keeps bad things from happening, and so we kind of give up.”Another thing Hermanson and Ciampi suggest is adjusting our mindset or going to therapy.Hermanson says the simple knowledge that millions of other people feel just like us can be empowering and help push us through. 2494

An early analysis of census data shows California and New York may lose a seat in the House, while Florida would gain two. This could mean Florida in the near future would have more electoral votes than New York. The analysis was done by William Frey, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institute, a nonprofit public policy organization, based on population estimates from mid-2020 released by the Census Bureau.Frey said the estimates released by the Census Bureau show that between July 2019 and July 2020, the population in the U.S. grew by .35%. That’s the lowest annual population growth rate since the turn of the last century, and that could mean the decade 2010-2020 may have the lowest decade growth rate in centuries. This low rate of growth and some “educated estimates” from Frey on new state-level data, could mean that seven states gain representatives in Congress and ten states lose some. One result of the Census is calculating the number of seats in the House of Representatives a state should have. Every decade, the Census Bureau adjusts the number of seats each state receives based on changes in population, the process is called reapportionment.Frey estimates that Texas will gain three representatives in the House, Florida wil gain two, and Arizona, Montana, Colorado, North Carolina and Oregon will gain one. Meanwhile, Alabama, California, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Rhode Island could all lose one representative, according to Frey’s estimates.Changing the number of seats in the House also changes how many votes the state gets in the Electoral College; electoral votes are the number of seats a state has in the House plus two senators.California currently has 55 electoral votes, with the next highest as Texas with 38 votes currently. New York and Florida are next, with 29 each; if New York were to lose one and Florida gain two, it would be the first time Florida had more votes than New York and would make Florida the third most represented state in the House.“This reapportionment will also affect the Electoral College in future presidential elections. There are a mix of “red” and “blue” states among those gaining and losing seats. Thus, it is difficult to predict how these changes will benefit future Republican and Democratic presidential candidates,” Frey wrote in his analysis.Frey’s estimates are based on early data shared by the Census Bureau. The complete 2020 Census will not be released until sometime early next year. 2524

Apple fans can finally turn themselves into an animated pig emoji on their very own iPhone X. The 9 Apple smartphone went on sale at 8 a.m. in Sydney, Australia.Hundreds of people lined-up outside the Sydney Apple Store,?according to local media. The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus went on sale September 21, but?excitement was tepid?outside Apple Stores compared to previous releases.
