TAMPA, Fla. -- As parents across the country grow more concerned every morning when they send their kids to school, more and more are turning to bulletproof backpacks.“After Sandy Hook, people couldn’t wrap their minds around a bulletproof backpack but now they think it’s something that they need," said Yasir Sheikh, the president of Guard Dog Security.The Sandy Hook shooting inspired Sheikh to create a backpack out of bulletproof materials. It doesn’t seem like much. The backpack has just a thin layer of kevlar, but it is certified to withstand handgun rounds.“Ideally, we think with the way things are going this should become mandatory, common for all students," said Skeikh. "It’s a sad reality, it’s become a new normal."Others feel the same. Just three days after the deadly school shooting in South Florida his company saw a 150 percent increase in the number of bags they shipped.But do they actually work?Ryan Hart is a certified firearm instructor for defense training company Ground Ready International Training, or G.R.I.T Ready. He also teaches active shooter survival courses.Hart put a barrel with sand behind the backpack to simulate a body and took aim with his Glock 19.“The rounds definitely penetrated the front of the bag here," said Hart inspecting the shot-up bag, "But if we flip it over there’s no penetration past the armor itself."Next up: the AR-15.In the last decade, this style of gun has been used in six of the 10 deadliest mass shootings throughout the country, including the Parkland school shooting.“It went right through the soft armor," Hart said after spraying the backpack with bullets from the AR-15.It's what Hart expected, as the Guard Dog Security backpack is not certified to withstand assault-style weapons. To stop bullets from a similar weapon, the backpack would need to be equipped with steel plates like those installed in military vests. However, that would make the backpack fairly heavy to carry.“I would recommend (the backpack), yes," Hart said. "While it did not stop a direct shot from an assault rifle it can still stop bullet fragments, ricochets, glass flying through the air.”Then we posed this question to Skeikh: "What do you think it says about our society that we are resorting to items like this?"The backpacks cost between 0-200. Auto shop is completely hands-on, right? Kids need to be in the grease, they need to be on the tools. And so, it's been very difficult. So we've actually had some teachers that actually put together tool kits and checked them out to students where they can tinker with things at home," said Dr. Jamon Peariso, the Director of College and Career Readiness at Visalia Unified School District.Dr. Peariso says continuing career technical education, also known as CTE, at school has been difficult during remote learning. So, they can continue to do a variety of hands-on projects related to a car and things you could do with a car."After teaching skilled trades classes at the high school level for 35 years, Bob Kilmer is now an Educational Consultant for Harbor Freight Tools. Harbor Freight's foundation has handed out more than 3,600 tool kits to teachers all across the country."The great part about the project was that those 53 teachers in those 12 states got a choice of what they could put in the kit for their particular discipline and the automotive kit is different than the welding kit, which is different than the construction and architecture kit, which is different than the robotics kit or the mega-tronics kit," said Kilmer.For school districts like Visalia Unified, the kits couldn't have come at a better time."There's a lot of companies like that that are coming out with more interactive-type educational tools that do a pretty good job considering the kids are locked in their room or house doing the course. That’s something I’m excited about and we’re utilizing that as much as possible in their pathways," said Dr. Peariso.For companies like Harbor Freight Tools, these tools are crucial for engaging students in an industry that needs them. Corwin says one in every three skilled trade workers across the country will be retiring within the next ten years. And they don't want the COVID-19 pandemic to slow down efforts to build up a new workforce for the industry."We've got to address the pipeline and we've got to ensure young people are exposed to the trades in high school and have a pathway to continue the work that they love, that they’re good at. (KGTV) - Chaos erupted in the middle of a youth soccer tournament in Temecula Sunday evening after reports that someone allegedly pulled out a gun during a confrontation with other spectators, witnesses and the CEO of the tournament told 10News.10News has learned that one of the teams is from Chula Vista. The incident happened at the Albion Development Showcase tournament at Galway Downs in Temecula, witnesses told 10News.Players from opposing teams began shoving each other during one of the finals matches, one parent said. A family member then stepped onto the field and punched one of the players."There was a lot of fouls going on and I could see it was heating up," spectator Robert Hernandez said. "So one of the brothers from the Albion team rushed onto the field and just cold-cocked one of the other opposing players and this kid was about three years older."Hernandez said the breach onto the field incited more than a dozen men to join in, creating a brawl. He said, at one point, a man walked away from the scrum and grabbed a camouflage backpack.RELATED: Parent speaks about violent confrontation at Temecula soccer tournament"The entire field was just rushing out to the sidelines, kids were running, crying, parents were pulling their kids, dragging them," spectator Robert Hernandez said. They're right in front of us and we're like what's going on? And we're like this guy must have a weapon," he said. He says the spectator that ran onto the field and struck his son is from the Los Angeles-based Azteca Soccer Club, not the Chula Vista Albion team.The father said his son sustained a minor head injury as a result of the attack. He described the assailant as being a possible teenager.Referee Alex Hansen was on another field and saw the stampede. "At first, I thought it was actually a bee swarm and so I thought we were going to hit the deck or something, but everyone kept saying, 'Shooter! Shooter! Run!' So we just had to run to the parking lot," Hansen said.He was immediately concerned about his 15-year-old brother who was refereeing near the commotion. He found out later his brother and players were hiding in a neighbor's garage.He said the kids were distraught, crying and asking for their parents. Witness accounts on social media reported that some players were temporarily separated from their parents causing more alarm.One of the players at the tournament, Luis Cruz, from Los Angeles, was on the field about 10 minutes into his championship match when the commotion began. He told 10News he was playing a few fields away but was able to hear the screams and saw people running. That's when he ran for safety."Everyone screamed 'run' and our coaches told us to just run and jump," he told 10News. "We all did and ended up on the other side of the fence huddled in the bushes with our coach and the team we were playing against.Hernandez said he never saw a weapon, but the man was detained by Temecula Sheriff's Deputies for a short time.The CEO of the Albion Development Showcase, Noah Gins, said the person that breached the field was a brother of the opposing team from Los Angeles who hit the Albion player.Gins said deputies never found a weapon and in his 40 years of experience he's never seen anything like this. He said he spoke with California State Soccer Association South and wants stronger consequences for anyone who goes onto the field to discourage this kind of behavior.Hernandez, a former coach, hopes parents reel in their enthusiasm at games, "Some of these parents get really emotional, they need to know it's just a game. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — New unredacted court documents reveal Aaron Glee Jr., who is accused in the murder of Oluwatoyin "Toyin" Salau and Vicki Sims, confessed to killing the young activist and community volunteer.The documents also detail how Sims and Glee knew each other and how all three of them briefly met on June 6.Probable cause documents state that when officers responded to Glee's home in the 2100 block of Monday Road on June 13, they found Vicki Sims' car stuck in the mud outside of the home. They say a sheet was placed over the back of the Toyota and the license plate was bent up, hiding the license plate number.When they went inside, they found 75-year-old Vicki Sims' body. Investigators say her arms and feet were tied up behind her.As they continued searching Glee's home, they found 19-year-old Oluwatoyin "Toyin" Salau's body. Documents say her body appeared to be "purposely" covered with leaves and other vegetation.According to documents, when officers spoke to Sims' family prior to the discovery of her body, they said that Sims "often prepared meals for 'Aaron'" and delivered them to his home."It was reported that 'Aaron,' who did not own his own vehicle, often obtained transportation from Sims," probable cause documents read.As police continued investigating, they learned that, about two hours before the bodies were discovered, Glee had bought a bus ticket to West Palm Beach. On June 14, Glee was detained by the Orlando Police Department at a Greyhound station.After complaining about having trouble breathing, Glee was taken to the hospital. That's where documents say he voluntarily confessed to the murders; once to officers who were guarding him and again to his mother in a phone call.When TPD officers interviewed him, Glee confessed to kidnapping and murdering Salau and Sims on different dates.Glee said that on June 6, he was at a bus stop on Apalachee Parkway when he met Salau. He said they talked for about an hour.During that time, he said Salau told him that she had been recently sexually assaulted and didn't have a permanent place to stay. After that, Glee agreed to go with Salau to his home so she could bathe and rest."Glee stated that he then placed a telephone call to Sims, and that she came and picked he and Salau up in her Toyota," documents read. According to investigators, Glee's story was corroborated by surveillance video.After Sims dropped them off, Glee said she left and Salau went inside the home to take a shower. After Salau got out of the shower, Glee said he "attempted to engage her in sexual activity."He told officers that Salau physically resisted him, biting him on the arm."Glee said he physically overpowered Salau... He was asked if he would characterize his actions as rape," investigators wrote in the documents. "Glee responded in the affirmative."Glee said that he then kept Salau inside the home for approximately three to five days. He told officers that he was heavily under the influence of alcohol during that time, so he was unsure exactly how much time had passed."Glee stated that he was aware he would be arrested and likely sentenced to prison if he allowed Salau to leave the residence," documents read. "Glee indicated he determined that his only course of action was to end her life."So, Glee said he tied her up in a way that made it difficult for her to breathe.Based on the evidence and Glee's confession, officers found probable cause to charge him with two counts of kidnapping and two counts of murder (second degree murder and premeditated murder), and one count of sexual assault.During a court appearance on Saturday, a judge ruled that Glee will be held in jail without bond.This story was originally published by staff at WTXL. 3747
