(AP) — Three war-trophy bells seized by U.S. troops over a century ago got a send-off back to the Philippines on Wednesday by U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis, who called the controversial decision to repatriate them an important gesture of friendship between the two countries.Some veterans and officials in the U.S. oppose returning the Bells of Balangiga, calling them memorials to American war dead. Now, President Donald Trump's administration has agreed that bolstering the U.S. relationship with a key international ally outweighs concerns at home, even among Republican political allies.Mattis marked the start of a several-week process to return the bells to a church in the Philippines with a visit to the two bells at F.E. In returning the Bells of Balangiga to our ally and our friend, the Philippines, we pick up our generation's responsibility to deepen the respect between our peoples," Mattis said in a ceremony at the base.Soldiers from the Philippines fought alongside U.S. troops in World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam War and in the recent struggle against international terrorism, Mattis pointed out."To those who fear that we lose something by returning the bells, please hear me when I say that the bells mark time, but courage is timeless," Mattis said.Those opposed to returning the bells include Wyoming Gov. Matt Mead, a Republican. Mead took part in the ceremony even as he sides with U.S. veterans who worry that returning the bells could lead to the repatriation of any number of items serving as memorials to American war dead."We know you and the president have looked at this, and the highest priority of the military of course is national security," Mead told Mattis at the gathering of a couple hundred Air Force officers, personnel and family members. CARSLBAD, Calif. (KGTV) -- If there's anyone in Carlsbad that knows food, it Cheri Poulos. Poulos is the founder of Carlsbad Food Tours, a tour that gives locals and tourists a taste of the city. Poulos has a blog where she writes about the best places to eat in the city. The food lover offers two different types of tours, one called the Taste of Carlsbad and one called the Indulgence Food tour. Private tours are also available. 10News went along with Poulos for one of the food tours. The first stop was at Gregorio's Italian Kitchen, known for giving back to the community. At one point, the restaurant donated all of their proceeds to the Boys and Girls Club. From Gregorio's the tour continued to Caldo Pomodoro, home to what some call the best garlic bread in the county. Portraits of Caldo Pomodoro's owners hang over the entrance of the restaurant. The restaurant's founders are a borther and sister duo, Fran and Gina. Fran was a Hollywood hairdresser and pictures of his clients adorn the walls of the restaurant. Fran has since passed away, his sister Gina now runs the restuarant. The tour also includes some stops at several sweet spots, including a gourmet donut shop called, The Goods. The Goods is the sister restaurant of Cafe Topes, a staple in town known for their cinnamon rolls. Both locations are run by the Barille family. The tour then continues to Gelato Love, a family-run gelato shop. The shop is owned by Paola Richard and her cousin, Christina. Gelato Love is the only shop in the entire country that doesn't use any added sugar, only sugar from the fruit itself. The tour also stops at other local favorites like Vigilucci's Gourmet Market, Witch Creek Winery and Humble Olive Oils. The tour operates daily, seven days a week. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) -- A California Highway Patrol Officer who lost family members in a DUI crash is sharing his story with local students.Tuesday, students saw a graphic and emotional scene play out right before their eyes. Authorities hope it might make them think twice before drinking and driving.The mock DUI crash played out on the field at Sage Creek High School and it all looked very real. The aftermath of a drunk driving crash, fellow classmates injured or dead and one of their own eventually arrested for getting behind the wheel.For CHP Officer Mark Latulippe, the program, called Every 15 Minutes, takes on an ever greater meaning this year.A few months ago, his cousin Scott Latulippe, Scott’s wife and son were hit and killed by a suspected drunk driver in Austin, Texas. Scott was a well-known teacher at Valley Center High School.The message at the event Tuesday was lives forever changed because of drinking and driving. The sentiment was echoed by Officer Latulippe who says his family’s story, although tragic, is all too common.The program will continue at Sage Creek High School Wednesday with a mock funeral and presentation from Officer Latulippe. 1190

(KGTV) -- Starting in January, San Diegans with a long commute can choose to ditch the traffic and fly to work thanks to a start-up service co-founded by a UC San Diego graduate.FLOAT, which stands for Fly Over All Traffic, is a commuter air service that will operate a fleet of nine-passenger planes at small airports throughout Southern California. Like van pools, routes will be determined by customer demand. There is already interest in service out of McClellan-Palomar Airport in Carlsbad, the company reports.
