An attorney says a Maryland man who was shot and killed by a police officer was asleep in his bedroom when police opened fire from outside his house. The 21-year-old man's girlfriend was also wounded. The Montgomery County Police Department said in a news release Friday that Duncan Socrates Lemp “confronted” police and was fatally shot by one of the officers early Thursday. An attorney for Lemp’s relatives said police couldn't have any justification for shooting Lemp based on what she has heard. AURORA, Colo. – One of the deans of instruction at Aurora West College Preparatory Academy was arrested Thursday on suspicion of carrying a weapon on school grounds and carrying a concealed weapon.Tushar Rae, 30, was still jailed in Denver Thursday afternoon on a 0,000 bond following his arrest stemming from the case out of Arapahoe County, according to court records.Carrying a weapon on school grounds is a class 6 felony while carrying a concealed weapon is a class 2 misdemeanor in Colorado.According to an informed source with knowledge of the investigation, arresting documents detail a tense confrontation between the school's principal and Rae before his arrest.The documents show Principal Taisiya “Taya” Tselolikhina received a text at around 2 p.m. Wednesday from Rae, telling her to “meet in the office” after the dean of instruction didn’t show up to school the whole day and didn't inform anyone he was going to be absent.Once in the office, Rae reportedly placed a gun on a counter and said, “Try and f—k with me. You shouldn’t have said what you said. I don’t want to hurt you. I’m going to hurt all the people around you.”The documents also stated Rae then said he was going to “shoot the kneecaps off two other people” before asking the principal what she was going to do about it."I came prepared,” Rae allegedly told Tselolikhina before he patted his pocket adding that “he had two extra rounds.”The arresting documents show Rae then told the principal to walk away or he would “shoot the next person outside the door.”The documents then state two students were outside the office and the school was placed on lockdown.Aurora police tweeted Wednesday that West Middle School was on lockdown because of a threat of an armed party in the area. The department later tweeted that a suspect was taken into custody by Denver police.But communications made to parents following the incident tell a different story about the lockdown.A call from the principal made to parents on Wednesday stated that Aurora Public School officials and Aurora Police Department investigated a possible threat at the school and that “there were rumors of an armed individual in the area” – hours after the district, school administrators and the school principal were all well aware Rae was on campus allegedly armed with a gun and reportedly making threats.A second call from the school on Thursday afternoon stated that after school officials learned about the allegations, “we promptly placed the employee on administrative leave."Rae, who remains is jail, is not allowed on school grounds pending the outcome of the criminal investigation. 2654

ATLANTA, Ga. – Frank Reiss has a deep love for books. "I think they're beautiful," he said. "I love looking at them I love holding them."The success of the titles, authors and tales on the shelves of his Atlanta shop are a big part of the twists and turns in the story of his small business.He opened A Capella Books in 1989. In the beginning, he focused on books that were hard to find."Used books, ordinary used books, scarce and rare books," Reiss said. Then, people started to turn to the internet for books. "When Amazon showed up, books came pretty available, anyone with a computer could find a book anywhere and it got more and more that way," Reiss said. "A lot of our inventory that used to be scarce, out of print, to to even 0 books became pretty common," Reiss said. "Became and books and it became difficult to make a living selling those."Reiss says his expenses continued to rise while his sales didn't. To keep his business and his job alive, he had to climb into a hole. He says he started putting expenses on credit cards. He says 15 years ago, the debt was at its worst."I probably got to about a quarter million dollars in debt," he said. The plot twist that changed his store was figuring out what to offer the internet couldn't. "We could really capture an audience for books when you could bring the authors to town or store or other venues in town and give their fans the opportunity to meet them and get their books signed," Reiss said. "Sales versus our low point versus now is probably six times the revenue that we had at its low point," Reiss said.He also says an independent bookstore has a human element the internet does not. "We know our customers reading taste, they know our taste, we have conversations and its a very real experience," Reiss said.Independent book sales rose steadily at the end of last decade, according to the Independent Booksellers Association. “I think you can open a book and just be they can take you anywhere,” said Reiss.
