A transformer explosion at a power plant in Queens temporarily lit up the New York City skyline in a brilliant blue Thursday night. But despite the eerily glowing color, an alien invasion it was not.Instead, the light came as part of a brief electrical fire after a "couple of transformers tripped offline" at the intersection of 20th Avenue and 32nd Street in Astoria, Con Edison spokesman Bob McGee told CNN.The issue caused a transmission dip in the area, and Con Edison crews responded with the Fire Department of New York, Con Edison said. The incident is under control and no injuries have been reported, the FDNY said. The explosion was determined to be a non-suspicious equipment malfunction, according to a tweet from the NYPD 114th Precinct. There are no significant reported power outages anymore, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said."No injuries, no fire, no evidence of extraterrestrial activity," the 920

A weather system heading toward the Gulf Coast now has a 90% chance of becoming a tropical storm, putting cities from Houston to Mobile, Alabama on alert and prompting oil rig evacuations in the Gulf of Mexico. The low-pressure system is now over the Florida panhandle, but is expected to travel into the Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday, where it will meet warm, open waters that will fuel the storm's intensity, according to CNN meteorologist Haley Brink. There, it has a 90% chance of developing into a tropical storm over the next 48 hours, according to the National Hurricane Center. That is up from a 70% chance on Tuesday. It isn't clear yet exactly where the storm will hit, Brink said, but models show it making landfall somewhere between Lake Charles, Louisiana and Mobile sometime Saturday. It would be the first tropical system in the United States this hurricane season.A tropical storm is an area of thunderstorms that produces a circular wind flow with winds from 39 to 73 miles per hour. With a lower wind speed, it would be a tropical depression. Higher, and it would be a hurricane.Regardless of the classification this system develops into, Louisiana and Mississippi are forecast to see very heavy rain -- more than a foot in some places, Brink said. The Gulf Coast area is prepared for intense weather."Tropical Storm, Hurricane, and Storm Surge Watches could be required for a portion of the northern Gulf Coast on Wednesday. An Air Force Reserve Unit reconnaissance aircraft is scheduled to investigate the disturbance tomorrow afternoon," the National Hurricane Service said.Oil production companies operating in the Gulf of Mexico have also started to enact precautions.Shell has evacuated all non-essential staff from eastern Gulf drilling rigs, with more action on the horizon depending on how the storm develops, spokeswoman Cindy Babski told CNN."Our top priorities are ensuring the safety of personnel, protecting the environment and minimizing impact to production and operations," Babski said.Chevron has also evacuated some non-essential employees from the Jack St. Malo facility, with shut-in procedures initiated at five other facilities, spokeswoman Veronica Flores-Paniagua told CNN.Potential storm surge has caused the National Weather Service to issue a flood warning for the Mississippi River, including New Orleans, through Saturday. The NWS said that the river could crest at 19 feet, or 2.3 feet below the record. The city is protected to a height of 20 feet. The Flood Protection Authority said it will be closing several flood gates and structures in the New Orleans area starting Wednesday morning. 2644

American Airlines plans to cancel flights well into April because of the Boeing 737 Max grounding.American, the world's largest airline, said Sunday it is canceling about 90 flights a day out through April 24. Before Sunday's announcement, American had only canceled flights through March 28.The airline is hopeful that that the 737 Max planes will be flying again soon, but said it is canceling flights about a month out as it waits for word from the Federal Aviation Administration."Canceling in advance provides additional availability and rebooking options for our customers," said the statement from American. The global fleet of 371 of the 737 Max jets was grounded indefinitely on March 13 after two of the planes had fatal crashes. A Lion Air flight crashed in October and an Ethiopian Airlines flight crashed on March 10.The causes of the crashes have yet to be determined but the focus has been on an automatic safety feature which may have forced the nose of each plane lower when it incorrectly believed the plane was in danger of going into a stall.Boeing and the FAA said they are working on an upgrade of its software to deal with that safety feature. Boeing said at the time of the grounding that it expected that update to be available "within weeks."American has 24 of the 737 Max 8 jets. But not every flight which had been scheduled to have a 737 Max has been canceled. American said it has rearranged its schedule to use other aircraft to complete some of those flights."We have balanced [cancellations] across our system," said the airline. It said both international and domestic flights are affected. "We will vary by day as we look to impact the fewest number of customers."American operates 3,300 flights its mainline system daily on average, and another 3,400 through regional carriers and partner airlines.Other carriers are not canceling nearly that far out.Southwest Airlines, which has 34 737 Max jets, said it is only canceling five days out at this point. It said it is also trying to rework the schedule to affect the fewest possible number of customers. 2099

A United Airlines flight made an unscheduled stop at Washington Dulles International Airport on Friday after an odor in the cabin left passengers feeling ill.Flight 1675 from Baltimore-Washington Airport (BWI) was en route to San Francisco International Airport (SFO), when it landed at Dulles at about 7:45 a.m.The plane landed without incident, according to a statement from Dulles International Airport. The Fire and Rescue Department responded to the scene and transported seven passengers to local hospitals for evaluation, the statement said.Raman Santra, one of the passengers on the flight, said that there was a "faint fuel smell" in the cabin before departure. The odor became "quite strong while in the air" and several passengers complained of nausea, chest pain and trouble breathing, Santra said.United Airlines canceled the flight and informed passengers that the aircraft, a Boeing 737, required "prolonged ventilation system maintenance," Santra said.Santra's wife, Jo Palmer, was one of the seven hospitalized because she had more acute symptoms. He said United Airlines representatives offered to take care of the hospital bills and other expenses.Palmer is doing better now, and the two hope to make it to their friend's wedding later Friday, Santra told CNN.United Airlines did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The incident did not impact airport operations, Dulles officials said.The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2019 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company.
