NASHVILLE, Tenn. - We’ve known for months about the dangers of the coronavirus spreading in crowded public places but we are now learning new information about the danger of COVID-19 spreading inside your home.The new study from Vanderbilt University Medical Center reveals how vulnerable family members can be inside a home where someone has contracted the coronavirus."What we found is COVID spreads very rapidly and very quickly inside a home," said Dr. Keipp Talbot of Vanderbilt University Medical Center.Just how fast? (WTVF) — Pregnant women in the healthcare industry are wondering if they should get the COVID-19 vaccine since it's available to them following the emergency use authorization.At Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Dr. Jennifer Thompson, an associate professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, said the risks associated with getting COVID-19 while pregnant are far worse than the risks associated with the vaccine. Thompson said, "They have increased risk of hospitalization, need for ICU, mechanical ventilation, and a slight increase risk in death compared to non-pregnant patients." She said her recommendation pertains to the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines for her patients who are pregnant, or trying to get pregnant. “So because of that increased risk, women who are pregnant are considered a higher risk group, and so therefore many of our organizations the CDC, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine recommend that the COVID-19 vaccine should not be withheld from pregnant individuals who meet criteria for vaccination based on their recommended priority group,” Thompson said.Dr. Thomspon practices what she preaches. "I actually received my vaccine on Friday, so I’m not concerned at this point about the long-term safety data," Thompson said. She noted that she’s had no side effects yet.While pregnant women were excluded from the trials, some women joined not knowing they were pregnant. Dr. Thompson said they’ve been following those cases closely. "These numbers are really small, but we have not seen significant adverse reactions both from a pregnancy standpoint or a fetal standpoint," Thompson said.Unfortunately, there's a lot of misinformation out there. There was an article circulating online which said the vaccine could cause infertility. Dr. Thompson said there’s no evidence to support that. "There’s some concern that the spike protein has a similar genetic makeup to one of the proteins in the placenta, however that similarity is less than 1%, and infertility has not been found from any of the scientific data," Thompson said. In addition, the COVID-19 vaccine is believed to be safe for women who are breast-feeding. Live vaccines are not recommended for pregnant women, but the COVID-19 vaccine is not live. “It’s an mRNA vaccine which is broken down by the body, and not incorporated into your DNA at all,” Thompson said, “Fetal risks are thought to be low due to the fact that the mRNA is broken down by your circulation and pre-clinical studies have been very reassuring.”If you have questions, talk to your doctor. More travelers are being deceived every year by third-party travel sites disguised as dream destinations.Hotel booking fraud is a growing problem — 1-in-4 American travelers say they've been duped.Molly Fay says one of these sites took advantage of her. She booked a dream vacation last year to wine country. In the interest of full disclosure, Fay works at Scripps station WTMJ in Milwaukee, the station that originally broke this story."I thought I was booking directly with the resort," Fay said.   She searched the web for the name of a California Inn and clicked on the website to reserve a room,."(It) absolutely looked like the property's website with the picture, their name top line and didn't have mention at that time of the booking service," Fay said. She actually booked through a third-party website, something Fay realized when the confirmation email came through.A few months before the trip, Fay had to cancel.  She was hoping to get some money back."I thought maybe the resort will make an exception or work with me. Maybe give me half of my money back," she said. The third-party website told Fay it was checking with the owner about her request.  "They got back to me immediately and said 'the owners of this property said they will make no exception for you," she said. Fay said she later discovered the site never actually made contact with the inn. The number of travelers duped by third-party websites is growing, according to the American Hotel & Lodging Association.  In 2015 only 6 percent of vacationers reported being a victim. In 2017, it was 22 percent.    Many result in bad bookings.  People are charged hidden fees, they don't get the accommodations promised, or reservations are lost.It's one of the reasons some people are trending back to travel agents.  "They do like to know they have that security," Holly Faith, with Fox World Travel Brookfield, told us.  With so many choices, and the pitfalls of online booking, they're seeing more travelers book through the agency."They get very overwhelmed. So they do come back kind of full circle now, to our advice," Faith said. There has been some oversight by the federal government. The FTC recently filed a complaint against a company that sells hotel reservations through third-party websites. It found the defendants engaged in "deceptive acts and practices" creating the impression consumers are booking rooms directly through the advertised hotel.  Fay was able to get some of her money back by bypassing the booking site and reaching out to the general manager at the California inn directly. Now, Fay says she's more careful when making a reservation.      There is federal legislation in the works called the Stop Online Booking Scams Act. It would require all third-party websites disclose they are not affiliated with hotels. MOUNDS, Okla. — Logan Phillips said he was inspired during the teacher walkout and signed up to run for Oklahoma's House District 24 seat on a whim.Phillips figured he would lose, but began legwork for a campaign in 2020. His opponent was 10-year incumbent Steve Kouplan, the Democratic minority leader."I didn't think I had a chance going against Goliath. He could outspend me, out-market me and do pretty much anything when it came to money. So it was just me talking to people," Phillips said.Phillips sat at Mamadou's Restaurant in Glenpool, Oklahoma by himself to watch the results come in on election night. He said even his wife went home early. But the Republican stayed neck in neck with the incumbent all evening."Then the polls and stuff actually went down. So they stopped reporting for about 10 minutes and we were stuck on the last four counties. I was losing within half a point. Then they all came in at the same time and I went up and won by 350 votes," Phillips said.Phillips said he spoke with a couple other lawmakers and put a few posts on social media. That was the extent of his campaign."Straight party voting was huge for the Republican party. They came out and they wanted the Republicans in and I was the Republican. That accounted for 50-something percent of my votes," Phillips said.The representative-elect is a teacher at Tulsa Community College. His father, sister and stepmother are also educators. The family tells KJRH they're excited for new faces at the state capitol."I'm certainly anticipating some great changes. That we could go from being the last in something to being the first in something.
