Texas Governor Greg Abbott told KTSA radio on Monday that he plans to send nearly 1,000 Texas National Guard troops to the US/Mexico border, after already committing to send 250 troops last week. The announcement came a week after President Donald Trump said he would send the National Guard to the border. Trump said the move was needed to help secure the border. Defense Secretary James Mattis said that up to 4,000 National Guard troops could end up staffing the border.The National Guard will work in a support role along the border, as troops are not allowed to make arrests or perform law enforcement functions. Abbott said troops along the border could be "in this for the long haul.”Troops from New Mexico and Arizona also will work the border. California has yet to commit troops to the border. Although Trump wants to bolster border security, it appears that illegal border crossings are down. Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett served for nearly three years on the board of private Christian schools that effectively barred admission to children of same-sex parents and made it plain that openly gay and lesbian teachers weren't welcome in the classroom.The policies that discriminated against LGBTQ people and their children were in place for years at Trinity Schools Inc., which has schools in Indiana, Minnesota and Virginia.The schools are affiliated with the insular community People of Praise that has its roots in its own interpretation of the Bible. Ten female Mcdonald's current and former employees have filed sexual harassment complaints against the company over the past week.One worker in Chicago said that a McDonald's supervisor at the franchise store retaliated against her by reducing her hours when she reported instances of sexual harassment by management. Another Chicago worker at a franchise said she was fired soon after reporting that a manager had made sexually explicit comments to her.A third individual in St. Louis, who is 15 years old, said she was repeatedly harassed by an older employee every Sunday for two months. The employee commented on her appearance and sexually propositioned her, she said. The employee added that reports of the incidents were not taken seriously by a superior at the company-owned store, and the harassment did not end until she stopped working on Sundays.A 20-year-old woman in Durham, North Carolina, said that she was sexually harassed by co-workers and supervisors. She also said she was subjected to a hostile work environment at the company-owned store because she is black. The woman said she was made fun of by colleagues after reporting the behaviors and she eventually stopped turning to management.The complaints were filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in seven states, including Michigan, Florida and Louisiana. The percentage of students in the class of 2019 who took out loans also dropped compared with 2018, from 65% to 62%.Debbie Cochrane, executive vice president of TICAS, says these shifts align with a general flattening of debt levels in recent years, due in part to increased state investment in higher education. But this trend and that funding could end due to the economic effects of COVID-19.“These students graduated in 2019,” Cochrane says. “We’re now in the middle of an economic and health crisis that puts all those gains in jeopardy.”Average student debt over timeAverage student debt growth has slowed, but indebtedness has increased substantially since TICAS issued its initial report on the subject 15 years ago.“What’s clear is that despite the flattening in recent years, debt has not been flat in the longer period,” Cochrane says.In 2004, the average student debt was ,550 — roughly 56% less than it is for the class of 2019.
