GENEVA, May 17 (Xinhua) -- The international community should have "a sense of urgency" in their efforts to realize the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), Chinese Minister of Health Chen Zhu said here on Monday."The deadline of the MDGs is only five years away, and we are facing huge challenges at this critical moment," Chen told the annual assembly of the World Health Organization (WHO)."The international community should have sense of mission and urgency to reach consensus, coordinate actions, and accelerate progress," Chen said.Addressing delegates from the WHO's 193 member states, Chen said that despite the unremitting efforts of the international community, "the MDG health indicators of women and children have been improving slowly and the situations are far from optimistic.""China holds that health of women and children constitutes an important element in a country's national basic health system and it reflects the social and economic development level," he stressed.Chen said the attainment of the MDGs would be "a historical milestone," and he urged governments to share this responsibility and "take stronger measures."One of the proposals the minister made at the conference was to improve the health of the people, particularly women and children."The ultimate goal of social and economic development is better life and brighter future for the people, and health is the basis of good life," he said.To improve the health of the people, countries need to build a strong and powerful health system so that they can provide comprehensive health services and tackle public health emergencies, according to the minister."All countries should attach importance to the building of such a system with articulated political commitments and substantial input," he said.Chen also highlighted the importance for controlling chronic and noncommunicable diseases, which "consume large quantities of health resources and afflict social and economic development.""To ensure sustainable health, social and economic development, the international community should conduct researches and take more effective countermeasures in its fight against such diseases, " he said.The minister also called on developed countries to increase their assistance to developing countries so that they can improve their health system and be more capable of dealing with health challenges."Health is an eternal theme of mankind, and the attainment of the MDGs is our common pursuit. BEIJING, April 22 (Xinhua) -- A leading Chinese government think tank Thursday forecast the country's 2010 economic growth would top the 8-percent target set by the central government by almost 2 percentage points.The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) forecast China's gross domestic product (GDP) would expand by 9.9 percent this year, 1.2 percentage points higher than last year's growth rate.Its forecast is higher than the 9.6-percent economic growth predicted by the Asian Development Bank earlier this month.Fixed assets investment would rise 33.3 percent year on year in 2010, said a blue book on China's 2010 economic prospects jointly released by the CASS and the Social Sciences Academic Press.The CASS said a slim chance existed of serious inflation in China this year with the consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of inflation, growing within a moderate range.The book also said the government should make economic policies more flexible and better targeted over the rest of the year, while mapping out plans to withdraw stimulus measures gradually within the next two years without jeopardizing economic growth.China's GDP grew 11.9 percent year on year in the first quarter to 8.06 trillion yuan (1.19 trillion U.S. dollars) and fixed assets investment rose 25.6 percent to 3.53 trillion yuan during the same period.The country's CPI rose 2.4 percent year on year in March, below the government target limit of 3 percent.

BEIJING, June 5 - Environmental protection is about choosing the right path for economic growth and the right consumption model, beyond pollution control, environment minister Zhou Shengxian said on Friday."We have not successfully put the brakes on severe pollution - a result of the country's vulnerable ecosystems, large population, extensive economic growth that relies heavily on resource consumption and unsound environmental supervision systems," said Zhou at a ceremony to mark World Environment Day, which falls on Saturday.The country needs to step up its green economic policies to facilitate the shift to a "highly effective and low-emission" growth mode, Zhou said.To that effect, the Ministry of Environmental Protection will continue to promote the reform of energy use and pricing to reflect market demand and supply, resource shortages and environmental prices, he said.A tax system that encourages energy saving and environmental protection will be established, and the existing environmental economic policy tools, such as green security, green purchase and green trade, will be improved, Zhou said.Encouraging a green lifestyle has also been highlighted as a crucial measure to curb excessive consumption and reduce emissions.Consumption choices, such as preferences for smaller cars and energy-efficient appliances, could have deep impact on green production, analysts have said.Faced with mounting challenges to fight the country's environmental problems, Zhou was particularly concerned that with the strong economic rebound, emissions may rise again as production capacity expands.

BEIJING, April 13 (Xinhua) -- China's drought relief authorities said Tuesday heavy rains had eased the drought in southwest China's Sichuan Province, but dry weather and high temperatures continued in other affected regions.Compared with data collected last Sunday, people and livestock facing shortage of drinking water in Sichuan had decreased by 500,000 and 560,000 respectively by Tuesday, said the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters (SFDH).Heavy rains also reduced the area of affected arable land in Sichuan by 2.33 million mu (155,333 hectares) by Tuesday, according to the SFDH.However, drought still persisted in other areas, including the provinces of Yunnan and Guizhou and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region as rain in these regions was far from adequate.As of Tuesday, drought had left 24.62 million people and 18.08 million livestock short of drinking water, said the statement.
