SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Saturday marks the end to the San Diego Zoo's longest closure in its 103-year history. For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic forced a shutdown in mid-March, the zoo is back open. Visitors were happy to return to one of our city's jewels, even with some changes.For the last three months, visitors have been anxious to come to the grand reopening on Saturday."The turtles are kind of big and funny," laughed little Kitara. Their immunity to COVID-19 is not certain. But the zoo isn't taking any chances."We've provided barriers and one-way pathways to keep the guests from getting too close to those areas."But there are many other exhibits where you can get up close to the animals. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A San Diego Couple is breaking the internet after getting married at a Costco in Mission Valley Thursday. Margot Schein and Julian Parris told 10News they made the decision to get married at Costco because, after meeting on a dating app, they decided to have their first date at the store. According to Schein, the couple decided to wed at Costco on their three-year anniversary. The wedding included a custom-made cake from the store, an archway and pallets to hold up bouquets of flowers. Staff at the store even took the time to set up chairs for the event as well as decorate a portion of the Costco with rose petals. “I feel like we have a whole new Costco family,” Margot said. 720

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Monday morning Escondido Police provided extra police patrols at a local mosque that was targeted on Sunday.Police say the Dar-ul-Arqam Mosque on 6th Avenue was set on fire by an arsonist that has yet to be identified.Worshipers inside the mosque noticed the flames around 3 a.m. on Sunday and were able to put them out before the fire could spread.Lt. Chris Lick with the Escondido Police Department said once police and arson investigators arrived, they determined that the fire was set intentionally. They also found a note left by the suspect.“Graffiti left behind by the suspect made reference to the shooting incident in New Zealand,” said Lt. Lick.The San Diego Police Department has also stepped up patrols at mosques across the city in response the incident in Escondido.San Diego's Anti-Defamation League issued a statement in support of the mosque and worshippers.“This attack appears to be meant to send a signal to the Muslim community” said ADL Regional Director Tammy Gillies. “Sadly, this type of behavior is consistent with the growth in hate crimes, rise in attacks on Muslims, and the surge in anti-Muslim bigotry that we have seen in our country and around the world.”A crowdfunding campaign was launched to help raise money to provide repairs and proper security at the mosque in Escondido.The campaign has received support from people across the country. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Bridging the gap between the community and the police department, the Fairmount Park Neighborhood Association threw a party for the men and women who patrol their streets every day. Daniel Palmer and Russ Connelly reminisced the good old days when the original owners from the 1950s took good care of the then-new Fairmount Park community. "Being in the area that is in the center of everything, it's very desirable," said Connelly, president of the Fairmount Park Neighborhood Association. But as the years went on and the homes changed hands, so did the vibe of the neighborhood."The streets were dirty and the houses were getting more dilapidated," Palmer said. Palmer said there were numerous reports of drugs, break-ins, and speeding problems along Parrot Street."We have a straight part of a downhill side of the street called the 'Parrot Way speedway,'" Connelly said. "A person was hit and run just a couple of hundred yards from my house," Palmer said. But the moment they shared their concerns with patrol officers, they said something changed. Instead of merely ticketing offenders, they said the officers took the time to engage with the community."I think that's had an effect on a lot of the neighbors because they suddenly seem to slow down, watch for traffic, watch what's going on," Connelly said. "You see people putting a coat of paint on their house. You see people picking up their yards. People are happier. They feel more secure," Palmer said. So as a token of their appreciation and hard work, the Fairmount Park Neighborhood Association threw a party for the Mid-City police officers and elected officials who make their area safe. Thank you, they said, for making Fairmount Park the desirable, sweet community it once was. "It's more of a family environment than it was five to six years ago. In all honesty, it's a lot cleaner. People are more friendly. There's more participation, more interaction. (KGTV) - NOAA's Climate Prediction Center released the updated outlook for winter 2020-2021 expectations, and the report shows the increased confidence for a moderate La Nina winter.National Weather Service Meteorologist Alex Tardy said La Nina winters mean cold water along the equator, which are already present in October. These cold waters can have a domino impact on the globe, including warmer waters in the Atlantic and ultimately a higher risk of hurricanes, and also a more northern jet stream over the west coast, keeping moisture isolated more north and leading to dry conditions in Southern California.This dry winter coupled with San Diego’s recent weather history could be a recipe for disaster. The last two winters have been wet in San Diego, with most areas in San Diego County getting 1.5 times their usual rainfall during the most recent winter. This increased moisture helped vegetation grow, then the summer of 2020 brought record-breaking heat, drying that vegetation out. That, coupled with a lack of monsoon moisture in 2020, means there is dry vegetation that could be fuel for fires.“Any type of fire is going to be a problem in Southern California because the conditions are so dry,” said Tardy.He added that a new water year just began Oct. 1, 2020, so while the last water year had impressive rain totals, a new year has started.“So regardless of what happened last winter, we kind of reset now. Now we’re in a whole new year and unfortunately, things are looking very stressed as far as fire conditions,” said Tardy.He said rain is not out of the question for a La Nina year, but it will be more variable. Winter is the best time for Southern California to accumulate rain, and with the decreased chances of rain, Southern California could move into drought conditions by the end of the winter. 1850
